Re: 2016 Legends Fantasy Football League

I just proposed a poll at ESPN main page regarding Waivers.

I've played in several leagues where instead of rolling waivers to claim free agents, we have used secret auction bidding system for free agents. Basically everyone gets a free agent budget. On the normal waiver processing day, instead of the free agent going to the person with the highest claim position, everyone secretly bids on waiver wire players. So for example: Let's say Tony Romo is on the waiver wire and it is announced that he is coming back in week 3. Several people want him but one is in waiver position 3 and the other two are in waiver position 8 and 9. The person in position 3 would get him and the other two are out of luck.

What happens in the free agent auction is that those same three owners all bid a secret amount before the normal waiver processing day. Owner 3 bids $21- Owner 8 bids $10 and Owner 9 goes crazy and bids $60. Owner 9 would receive the player off of waivers but his waiver budget for the rest of the year would be reduced from $200 down to $140. Let's say no one else bid but owner 9 bid $80. Regardless of the lack of interest in a player, owner 9 still loses his/her full bid but gains the player.

Thoughts? I've played in leagues that use this system and it seems to keep everyone involved in the weekly waiver process instead of just the top few positions.

Re: 2016 Legends Fantasy Football League

Would you know how many bids have been made, and what the highest bid is?

Does the normal waiver wire process go snake style...for instance, after week one, team in last place first claim position, team 2nd to last is 2nd, etc etc...then the following week, it's first team in first position, 2nd team in 2nd, etc and it flips back and forth after each week? Or is it randomized?

Re: 2016 Legends Fantasy Football League

It's a secret system so no one would know who's bid and how much. Over the years it would become easier as you learn people's tendencies, but we'd be flying blind at the start as far as knowing who will make big bids, who will lie in the weeds, etc.

I can go either way on the proposal. I've never played with a FAB, but I've seen situations where some teams are completely shut out of the waiver process when the order resets every week. It's better when teams that don't make a move are then moved to the front of line the following week. Offhand I don't know what our current rules are.

Re: 2016 Legends Fantasy Football League

DVDJosh just paid! Just missing a few entry fees. Remember, today is the cutoff! Want to set the draft order ASAP. We currently have 9 paid.

To answer the questions regarding the FAB system:

Davidh777- It definitely is a secret bid but you do find out who won the bid after and how much they bid along with others who bid and lost. The advantage of this system is that is forces everyone to be more involved. The way it is now, many people who are low on the waiver list don't even bother putting in the claim because they know they have no chance to get the big free agent that week. The FAB gives everyone the opportunity to stay active and make decisions.

Osiris3657- The way the current system works is that it initially starts off random. Once someone claims someone they then go to the back of the list. One of the problems with this system is that you'll always have a player or two who aren't real active in free agency. So they end up sitting at the top most of the season and it becomes hard to know if you really have a shot at a player or not. In addition, if you put in several claims and only get like your 3rd choice player- lets say a kicker for instance, you go to the back of the list again. So you are stuck at the back of the waiver order with someone else who got the "hot" pickup of the week while you just got a kicker replacement. In my opinion, bidding for free agents just seems so much more fair and encourages participation in the waiver wire process each week.

Re: 2016 Legends Fantasy Football League

OK, the FAB sounds like an interesting change.

Is the current system the default?

Re: 2016 Legends Fantasy Football League

The principle sounds like auction vs. draft: Rather than being locked out, you have a shot at any player you want if you're willing to pay the price.

Re: 2016 Legends Fantasy Football League

We are all set! We will have 12 owners once again with a few new faces. Payments have all been received! Thank you.

I will use the same random draft order generator no later than tomorrow so those who want to do mocks or preplan can do so knowing their draft spot. Keep an eye out for email and I'll post in thread as well.

Looking forward to another fun season!

-David

I wish I was lower than 8th myself. I think the ideal spot this year is pick 11 or 12.
