DVD Talk 2014 World Cup Pool

Here's how the DVD Talk 2014 World Cup Pool will run:

- You select at least 3, but no more than 5, teams from the list of teams below. Each team has an assigned dollar value and you have $100 to spend. The combined value of your selected teams may not exceed $100.
- Points are earned based on how your selected teams fare. The player who gets the most points wins.
- Players may post their selections at any time prior to the kickoff of the first game.
- Changes may be made prior to the first kickoff, but can only be made by posting an additional message to this thread. Any post which bears an "edited" timestamp will be ignored.
- No two players may select an identical set of teams.
- Tiebreakers described below using jersey number of the player scoring the final goal of the tourney.

TEAM VALUES
$70 = BRA-Brazil
$50 = ARG-Argenting, ESP-Spain, GER-Germany
$40 = BEL-Belguim, COL-Colombia, URU-Uruguay
$35 = FRA-France, ITA-Italy, POR-Portugal
$30 = ENG-England, NED-Netherlands, SUI-Switzerland
$25 = CHI-Chile, RUS-Russia, USA-United States
$20 = CRO-Croatia, GRE-Greece, MEX-Mexico

SCORING
Group Phase
Win = 3 points
Draw = 1 point
Advancing to Knockout Phase = 1 bonus point

Knockout Phase
Win in regulation = 3 points
Win in OT/Shootout = 2 points
Loss in OT/Shootout = 1 point
Multiplier = x2 in Round of 16, x4 in Quarter-Finals, x8 in Semi-Finals, x12 in the Third Place game, x16 in Finals

Maximum Possible Points (for one team)
Group Phase: 3 wins = 9+1 = 10
Round of 16: Regulation win = 3x2 = 6
Quarter-Finals: Regulation win = 3x4 = 12
Semi-Finals: Regulation win = 3x8 = 24
Finals: Regulation win = 3x16 = 48
TOTAL = 100 points

Tiebreaker procedure:
- In addition to your set of teams, please provide a jersey number.
- In the case of a tie, the tiebreaker will be the number of the jersey worn by the player who kicks the final goal (whether in regulation, overtime, or in a shootout*) of the championship match. The DVD Talk player who comes closest to that jersey number will be the winner.
- If two or more DVD Talk players are equally close, the winner shall be the person who posted their picks earliest.
- If no jersey number is chosen, you will be assigned a value of 99.

* In the event of a shootout, the "final goal" will be awarded to the player who puts the last ball past the keeper, regardless of whether or not he is credited with an official "goal".

Re: DVD Talk 2014 World Cup Pool

Player head-to-head scenarios

I have gone through each players' selections to see which head-to-head scenarios exist, which would be where two or more players selected (generally) two or more identical teams. I cannot verify that the following is an exhaustive list, but I believe these to be correct.

HOW TO READ THIS LIST - EXAMPLE:
ARG+CHI+BIH
Pharoh GHA
Bill Needle JPN KOR
This means that Pharoh and Bill Needle have both selected ARG, CHI and BIH. The unique head-to-head teams they own are GHA (for Pharoh) and JPN+KOR (for Bill Needle). If GHA is assured of getting more points than JPN and KOR combined, Pharoh is certain to finish ahead of Bill Needle, eliminating Bill. If JPN and KOR are assured of getting more combined points than GHA, then Pharoh is eliminated.

Re: DVD Talk 2014 World Cup Pool

Okay, it's time to begin the agonizingly-slow process of revealing this year's team values.

The FIVE DOLLAR teams are:

AUSTRALIA (AUS)

Confederation = AFC
How they qualified = 2nd Place Group B (behind Japan), AFC Fourth Round
FIFA World Ranking = 59th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 41st
Odds on winning = 500:1
4th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Round of 16 (Germany 2006)
Nickname = Socceroos

Group B: (w/CHI ESP NED)

Background: Australia have become much stronger in world football over recent times with several of their star players playing in Europe which has boosted the fortunes of the National team over the last decade. They became the second team, behind Japan, to book their place in Brazil 2014, although they did it the hard way after securing their spot in the final game of the AFC qualification campaign. It will be the Socceroos' third consecutive World Cup having previously qualified for Germany 2006 and South Africa 2010. In Germany they reached the last-16, only to be cruelly knocked-out by eventual winners Italy, who scored a controversial last gasp penalty. Meanwhile they failed to make it out of the group stages in 2010.

Group Analysis: Australia's chances of replicating 2010 and reaching the knockout stages are very slim considering the daunting group they have been placed in. Of all the 32 teams Australia can count themselves the most unlucky after drawing the 2010 winners Spain, 2010 runners-up Netherlands, and an electric Chile side who are hitting form at just the right time. At times Australia struggled in qualification, where they lost to Jordan and drew with Oman twice, and it will no doubt take a miracle in order to upset the odds.

CAMEROON (CMR)

Confederation = CAF
How they qualified = Defeated Tunisia, CAF Third Round
FIFA World Ranking = 50th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 38th
Odds on winning = 500:1
6th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Quarter-Finals (Italy 1990)
Nickname = The Indomitable Lions

Group A: (w/BRA CRO MEX)

Background: Cameroon are the most successful side in Africa on the world stage having qualified for seven World Cups. Their most famous moment came back in 1990 when they became the first side from their continent to to progress all the way to the World Cup quarter-finals, before losing 3-2 to England after extra-time. Cameroon are not quite as strong as they have been in recent years but they are more than capable of causing a few upsets, especially if star man Samuel Eto'o is in top form, with the striker boasting nearly a goal a game for his country. The Indomitable Lions' last World Cup appearance was in South Africa where they were unable to profress out of their group, which is something they will be looking to improve on this time around.

Group Analysis: Cameroon have hit some good form over the last year, finishing top of their qualification group, before beating Tunisia in the play-offs and advancing through to the World Cup. On paper they do not look as strong as in the past but they do have the likes of Eto'o, Song from Arsenal and Geremi who are all world class players,. Cameroon will be aiming to qualify for the knock-out stages of the tournament but face a tough task having been drawn in Group A along side hosts Brazil, Croatia and Mexico.

JAPAN (JPN)

Confederation = AFC
How they qualified = 1st Place Group B, AFC Fourth Round
FIFA World Ranking = 47th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 37th
Odds on winning = 150:1
5th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Round of 16 (South Africa 2010 & Japan/Korea 2002)
Nickname = Samurai Blue

Group C: (w/CIV COL GRE)

Background: Japan have qualified for the last five World Cups and they head to Brazil 2014 in high spirits having breezed through their AFC qualification group, leaving the likes of Australia in their wake. They are well capable of causing an upset or two, as they nearly did in the 2013 Confederations Cup where they pushed Italy all the way in a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat. Japan have twice reached the knockout stages of the World Cup in 2002 and more recently in 2010. In South Africa they finished second to Holland in their group and pushed Paraguay all the way in the round of 16, only to lose in agonising fashion on penalties.

Group Analysis: Japan have played well recently during qualification as always. Their slick, high tempo game is certainly eye catching and they are very dangerous on the break. They have been handed a decent looking group alongside Colombia, Greece and Ivory Coast, which is likely to go right down to the wire. All four teams have a decent task of progressing through to the second-round, although Colombia will start as the favourites.

SOUTH KOREA (KOR)

Confederation = AFC
How they qualified = 2nd Place Group A (behind Iran), AFC Fourth Round
FIFA World Ranking = 55th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 32nd
Odds on winning = 300:1
9th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Fourth Place (Japan/Korea 2002)
Nickname = Taegeuk Warriors

Group H (w/ALG BEL RUS)

Background: South Korea have consistently been one of the top teams in Asia over the last couple of decades and thats demonstrated in the fact that they have qualified for eight consecutive tournaments including Brazil in 2014. They co-hosted the World Cup in 2002 when they they went all the way to the Semi-Final in a remarkable run that saw the whole nation get behind the team during the tournament. South Korea have a knack of performing well when they are the underdogs which will be a valuable asset for the side once again in Brazil as they will not be one of the favourites in the group.

Group Analysis: The South Koreans will need to find something if they are to match their amazing exploits of 2002 on home soil as they do not look as strong this time around, they have however been in good form through qualification and will be one of the tougher Asian teams to beat. This time around they have been placed in Group H alongside the European duo Belgium and Russia, plus Africa's Algeria. The latter are definitely the group outsiders, while the former two are expected to produce in this tournament. However, South Korea definitely have a chance of sneaking through to the next round but it is vital that they get a result from their opening match against Russia.

Re: DVD Talk 2014 World Cup Pool

The TEN DOLLAR teams are:

COSTA RICA (CRC)

Confederation = CONCACAF
How they qualified = 2nd Place (behind USA), CONCACAF Fourth Round
FIFA World Ranking = 34th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 24th
Odds on winning = 2,500:1
4th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Round of 16 (Italy 1990)
Nickname = Ticos

Group D: (w/ENG ITA URU)

Background: Costa Rica will be raring to go come June having missed out on the last World Cup in South Africa. In both 2002 and 2006 they were unable to progress past the group stages and if they are going to break that mould then they will have to upset Italy, England and Uruguay in a daunting Group D. In their debut World Cup campaign in 1990 they progressed through to the last-16 after beating both Sweden adn Scotland in the group stages.

Group Analysis: Costa Rica base their play on a strong defensive unit that kept seven clean sheets in 14 qualification matches. It is therefore crucial that the Central American side are at their absolute defensive best this summer after being drawn in Group D with football heavyweights Italy, Uruguay and England. Costa Rica are undoubtedly the group underdogs, however with absolutely no pressure on their shoulders they may provide a shock or two in Brazil.

GHANA (GHA)

Confederation = CAF
How they qualified = Defeated Egypt, CAF Third Round
FIFA World Ranking = 38th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 26th
Odds on winning = 250:1
3rd appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Quarter-Final (South Africa 2014)
Nickname = Black Stars

Group G: (w/GER POR USA)

Background: Ghana are currently one of the strongest teams from Africa, reflected in their performance at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa where they reached the quarter-finals. In truth they were unfortunate to not make it through to the last-four, with Uruguay's Luis Suarez controversially handling the ball on the line in the final minute of extra time, with Ghana missing the subsequent penalty and then suffering further heartache in th penalty-shoot out. Ghana are a growing force in World terms as more and more of their players are plying their trade in the big European leagues including the Premier League and Serie A which means they are going to be a dangerous outfit during the World Cup.

Group Analysis: Ghana have been placed in a tough Group G with Germany, Portugal and USA. It os an intriguing group but if they can play to their true potential they will have an outside chance of upsetting the odds and progressing through to the knockout stages of the tournament. If they can conjure up a win in their opening match against the United States then they will put themselves in a great position to qualify.

HONDURAS (HON)

Confederation = CONCACAF
How they qualified = 3rd Place (behind USA & CRC), CONCACAF Fourth Round
FIFA World Ranking = 30th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 33rd
Odds on winning = 2,000:1
3rd appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Have never progressed beyond group stage
Nickname = Los Catrachos ("Those Clever Hondurans")

Group E: (w/ECU FRA SUI)

Background: Honduras surprised everyone when they qualified for the 2010 World Cup, which was their first appearance in the Finals since 1982. They headed to South Africa as complete underdogs but managed to come away with a point following a goalless draw with Switzerland in their final group game. In June they will be taking part in their third World Cup Finals, and will no doubt be gunning to come away with their first ever win in the tournament. The side are managed by Luis Fernando Suárez who took over in 2011, and under his leadership they qualified behind USA and Costa Rica in the CONCACAF zone.

Group Analysis: Honduras will feel like they have a cracking chance of claiming that prized win after being drawn alongside Switzerland, Ecuador and France in Group E. The latter are expected to run away with the group but the other two teams are definitely beatable. They will be flowing with confidence having beaten both USA and Mexico in qualifying and will now be looking to conjure up a shock or two in Brazil.

IRAN (IRN)

Confederation = AFC
How they qualified = 1st Place Group A, AFC Fourth Round
FIFA World Ranking = 37th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 39th
Odds on winning = 1,500:1
4th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Have never progressed beyond group stage
Nickname = The Iranian Lions, The Princes of Persia

Group F: (w/ARG BIH NGA)

Background: Iran qualified for the 2014 World Cup after winning AFC qualification Group A. They will now prepare to take part in their fourth World Cup, having previously participated in 2006, 1998 and 1978. They have never progressed past the first round, winning one of nine matches at the Finals, which was a 2-1 victory over USA at France 1998.

Group Analysis: Iran have been handed a daunting group containing Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Nigeria. They are the rank outsiders to progress through to the next round but they will still be gunning to make life difficult for the other three teams.

NIGERIA (NGA)

Confederation = CAF
How they qualified = Defeated Ethopia, CAF Third Round
FIFA World Ranking = 45th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 28th
Odds on winning = 250:1
5th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Round of 16 (USA 1994 & France 1998)
Nickname = Super Eagles

Group G: (w/ARG BIH IRN)

Background: Nigeria are traditionally one of the powerhouses of African football and have once again qualified for the World Cup in Brazil 2014. The last time we saw the Super Eagles on the showcase world stage was in 2010 when they finished rock-bottom and winless of Group B. They will be gunning to bounce back this time around having booked their place in South America after beating Ethiopia in the final stage of the CAF qualification zone.

Group Analysis: Similarly to 2010 Nigeria have been bundled in a group with well fancied Argentina who many think will go all the way in Brazil. Debutants Bosnia-Hercegovina also feature in Group F as do Iran. Realistically the fight is on for second place, with Argentina expected to steamroll away with the group. Nigeria definitely have an excellent chance of progressing, and their game with Bosnia is likely to be crucial.

Re: DVD Talk 2014 World Cup Pool

The FIFTEEN DOLLAR teams are:

ALGERIA (ALG)

Confederation = CAF
How they qualified = Defeated Burkina Faso, CAF Third Round
FIFA World Ranking = 25th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 69th
Odds on winning = 1,500:1
3rd appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Have never progressed beyond group stage
Nickname = The Desert Warriors

Group H: (w/BEL KOR RUS)

Background: Algeria have appeared in three World Cup Finals, with their most recent in South Africa 2010 where they failed to get the group stages despite recording a very impressive goalless draw with England. They recently booked their place in Brazil 2014 where they will be looking to book their place in the knockout stages for the first time in their history. There are no real star names in the Algerian squad but they do have a number of players that ply their trade in Europe; midfielders Adlene Guedioura is at Crystal Palace while Saphir Taider is at Inter Milan. Meanwhile in attack they have Nottingham Forest strikewr Rafik Djebbour, and Sporting Lisbon forward Islam Slimani. Algeria will need each of these players to be at the top of their game if they are to have any chance of having a good campaign in Brazil.

Group Analysis: Algeria are once again up against it as they have been placed in a difficult looking Group H which contains Belgium, Russia and South Korea. The two European sides are the favourites to progress but, as Algeria proved against England in 2010, they can be a stubborn outfit and difficult to score against.

BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA (BIH)

Confederation = UEFA
How they qualified = Group G First Place, UEFA Group Stage
FIFA World Ranking = 25th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 15th
Odds on winning = 150:1
1st appearance in Finals
Previous Best = N/A
Nickname = Dragons, Golden Lilies

Group F: (w/ARG IRN NGA)

Background: The 2014 World Cup will be Bosnia and Herzegovina's debut at a major tournament. They enjoyed an excellent qualification campaign, winning eight and drawing one of their 10 group games, as they did enough to just edge out Greece on goal difference. The Bosnians are an attractive side who love to venture forward in search of goals, which was reflected during qualification where they found the back of the net 30 times. If strikers Edin Dzeko and Vedad Ibisevic are on top form then they have every chance of progressing through to the knockout stages on their debut.

Group Analysis: Their qualiying success proved to be a major break through for Bosnia who had previously experienced play-off heartache for both the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, losing to Portugal on both occasions. However, now they have overcome that obstacle they will be raring to go in Brazil this summer. Safet Susic's men have been drawn in Group F alongside Argentina, Nigeria and Iran. If they cane come out unscathed from their opening game against hot favourites Argentina then they will put themselves in a great position to progress, with their match against Nigeria likely to be pivotal.

IVORY COAST (CIV)

Confederation = CAF
How they qualified = Defeated Senegal, CAF Third Round
FIFA World Ranking = 21st
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 16th
Odds on winning = 125:1
3rd appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Have never progressed beyond group stage
Nickname = The Elephants

Group C: (w/COL GRE JPN)

Background: The Ivory Coast have transformed into one of Africa's best teams in recent years and they will pose a big threat to many of the teams heading to Brazil this summer. The Elephants have been improving for a number of years now, with nearly all of their players staring in Europe's top leagues. More often than not starting in the French League due to the language, and then moving onto England which has become a regular path for the Ivory Coast players.

Group Analysis: The Ivory Coast certainly have a cracking chance of making it through the group stages of the World Cup in 2014 as they have a strong squad who have performed well in recent months. They feature in one of the more open groups in Brazil, with Group C also containing Japan, Colombia and Greece. Colombia will start as favourites following an impressive qualification campaign combined with their vital experience of playing in South America, however anything can happen come June, and the Ivory Coast will be desperate to progress through to the knockout stages for the first time in their history.

ECUADOR (ECU)

Confederation = CONMEBOL
How they qualified = Fourth Place (behind ARG, COL & CHI) - CONMEBOL Group Stage
FIFA World Ranking = 28th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 10th
Odds on winning = 1,250:1
3rd appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Round of 16 (Germany 2006)
Nickname = La Tri ("Tri-Color")

Group E: (w/FRA HON SUI)

Background: Ecuador will be appearing in only their third World Cup when they take to the field in June. The South American outfit made their debut in the tournament in 2002, where they got knocked-out in the group stages, before marching through to the last-16 on their return in 2006. However, they failed to qualify in 2010, meaning this will be their first appearance in eight years. Ecuador are known for their attacking play, but more often then not they suffer at the back. Furthermore they have been diagnosed with extreme travel sickness, having failed to win a single one of their eight away qualifiers, which doesn't bode well for Brazil 2014. They may be playing in their own continent but if they fail to zip up their defence and get over their travel woes then they could be heading for an early exit.

Group Analysis: Ecuador will be reasonably content with Group E, as they bid to fight it out with France, Switzerland and Honduras in an attempt to reach the last-16. Heavyweights France are the obvious favourites to progress, but Ecuador will fancy their chances against Switzerland and group minnows Honduras. Their opening match against the Swiss on 15 June is likely to be pivotal in deciding which of the two sides make it through to the latter stages.

Re: DVD Talk 2014 World Cup Pool

The TWENTY DOLLAR teams are:

CROATIA (CRO)

Confederation = UEFA
How they qualified = Defeated Iceland, UEFA Playoff Round
FIFA World Ranking = 20th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 30th
Odds on winning = 150:1
4th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = 3rd Place (France 1998)
Nickname = Vatreni ("The Blazers")

Group A: (w/BRA CMR MEX)

Background: Come June Croatia will be appearing in their fourth World Cup after securing their spot through the play-offs. In their World Cup debut they memorably reached the semi-final at France 1998, and secured a third place finish after beating Netherlands in the third-place match. Since then they have been unable to make it past the group stages but will be hoping to break that trend come the summer.

Group Analysis: Croatia have been placed in Group A alongside Brazil, Mexico and Cameroon. World Cup favourites Brazil are expected to run away with the group and if so it will therefore be a three-horse race for second spot. Croatia have the unfortunate task of playing in the opening game against the hosts, however if they can get a result from that clash then it will give Niko Kovac's men real confidence ahead of their two remaining group stage fixtures.

GREECE (GRE)

Confederation = UEFA
How they qualified = Defeated Romania, UEFA Playoff Round
FIFA World Ranking = 10th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 27th
Odds on winning = 300:1
3rd appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Have never progressed beyond group stage
Nickname = Ethniki ("National")

Group C: (w/CIV COL JPN)

Background: Greece have only ever won one World Cup match, which is something they are desperate to prove when they step foot in Brazil this summer. That statistic seems remarkably considering that back in 2004 they were crowned champions of Europe after miraculously conjuring up the biggest shock in football historyas they claimed the most unlikely of sporting victories. Greece are currently managed by Fernando Santos who took over after in July 2010 folloing Greece's World Cup exit. He guided them through qualification to Euro 2012, where they made it through the group stages before losing to Germany in the quarter-finals. They have since qualified, via the play-offs for the 2014 World Cup and while they are unlikely to reach the dizzy heights of Euro 2004, they do have a chance of improving on their wretched World Cup record.

Group Analysis: Greece have a very poor World Cup record, having only ever qualified through to two Finals (before 2014) and failing to pass through the group stages on both occasions. They made their debut in USA 1994 but bowed out meekly after losing all three matches. In South Africa 2010 they won their first ever match at the Finals - a 2-1 win against Nigeria - but defeats to South Korea and Argentina meant that they packed their bags early.

MEXICO (MEX)

Confederation = CONCACAF
How they qualified = Defeated New Zealand, CONCACAF-OFC Interzonal Playoff
FIFA World Ranking = 19th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 25th
Odds on winning = 100:1
15th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Quarter-Finals (Italy 1970, Mexico 1986)
Nickname = El Tri

Group A: (w/BRA CMR CRO)

Background: Mexico are one of the teams that nearly always qualify for the World Cup, which is mainly due to the poor standard of their qualification system in North and Central America. However, they made a hash of it this time around, and in the end had to go through the play-offs in order to book their place in Brazil. Fortunately for the country they battered New Zealand 9-3 on aggregate. The Mexicans best performance in a World Cup was reaching the quarter-finals on two occasions with the last time being in 1986 and they are more often than not a dangerous team.

Group Analysis: Mexico have been placed in a tricky Group A, which contains hosts Brazil, along with Cameroon and Croatia. With Brazil the hot favourites for top spot the Mexicans are more than likely going to have to battle it out with the other two teams for the runners-up place. They face Cameroon in their opening match, before locking horns with Brazil, and then Croatia.

Re: DVD Talk 2014 World Cup Pool

This is just a tease....

... as one-half of the field has been placed. Tune-in tomorrow as we begin revealing the other 16 sides. Once all 32 teams' values have been posted, the pool will be open for your selections.

REMEMBER>>>>> Picks with an "Edited" timestamp will be ignored, so there is no value in posting any "placeholder" posts to this thread. There will be plenty of time to get your picks in before the games begin in June.

Re: DVD Talk 2014 World Cup Pool

The TWENTY-FIVE DOLLAR teams are:

CHILE (CHI)

Confederation = CONMEBOL
How they qualified = Third Place (behind ARG & COL) - CONMEBOL Group Stage
FIFA World Ranking = 13th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 5th
Odds on winning = 40:1
9th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Third Place (Chile 1962)
Nickname = La Roja ("The Red One")

Group B: (w/AUS ESP NED)

Background: Chile have emerged as one of the most entertaining teams in world football. They have upped their game in recent years and head to the World Cup brimming with confidence, and expectations are high that they can provide a shock or two in what promises to be an enthralling tournament. La Roja enjoyed a decent qualification campaign, finishing just behind Colombia and winners Argentina. Chile have appeared in eight World Cup Finals since they made their debut in 1930. Their best showing was on home soil in 1962 when they finished in third place. In their last two showings they have been knocked-out in the group stages, losing comprehensively to Brazil on both occasions.

Group Analysis: Chile have been placed in a daunting Group B alongside defending champions Spain, 2010 runners-up Netherlands, and Australia. La Roja no doubt have a huge task ahead of them but they have the confidence and talent to sneak a top-2 spot, while they will also be used to the conditions. If they can emerge from the group then they have the potential to cause a few more surprises in the group stage.

RUSSIA (RUS)

Confederation = UEFA
How they qualified = Group F First Place, UEFA Group Stage
FIFA World Ranking = 18th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 17th
Odds on winning = 80:1
3rd appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Have never progressed beyond group stage
Nickname = Sbornaya ("The National team")

Group H: (w/ALG BEL KOR)

Background: Russia have been a faded force on the international scene for some time, having failed to even qualify for the past two World Cups, while in their previous two appearances they were unable tog et past the group stages. As the USSR they reached the semi-finals in 1996, and the quarter-finals on three separate occasions. Russia enjoyed a decent qualifying campaign, as they piped the well fancied Portugal to top spot in Group F. Fabio Capello has made Russia difficult to score against, and therefore difficult to beat, however he does not have a consistent goalscorer at his disposal, which could cause problems in Brazil. However, Russia will no doubt have learnt their lessons from their Euro 2012 and have enough qualify to progress through to the last-16, at the very least.

Group Analysis: Russia have been placed in the eighth and final Group H, which also includes Belgium, South Korea and Algeria. The European duo are expected to battle it out for top spot, with Russia's mid-point match with Belgium the must-see match of this particular group. However, Capello's men will still be wary of the threat of a South Korea side who memorably reached the semi-finals 12 years ago, while Algeria held England to a goalless draw in 2010.

UNITED STATES (USA)

Confederation = CONCACAF
How they qualified = First Place, CONCACAF Fourth Round
FIFA World Ranking = 14th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 21st
Odds on winning = 225:1
10th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Third Place (Uruguay 1930)
Nickname = The Yanks

Group G: (w/GER GHA POR)

Background: The United States will be playing in their seventh consecutive World Cup this summer. Back in 2010 they reached the knockout stages - before agonisingly losing to Ghana in extra-time in the last-16 - while in 2002 they memorably made it through to the quarter-finals where they lost to Germany. This time around they have the chance to avenge both of those defeats as they've been placed in a compelling looking Group G featuring both Germany and Ghana, along with Portugal. One of the main reasons for the USA's improvement has been the experience gained by the likes of Clint Dempsey, Tim Howard and Landon Donovan who have all had spells in the big European leagues. Those players will be the key for them in qualification and will no doubt play a big part in the Brazil 2014 (except for Donovan).

Group Analysis: USA have been placed in a tough Group G with Germany, Portugal and Ghana. It is an intriguing group but if they can play to their true potential they will have an outside chance of upsetting the odds and progressing through to the knockout stages of the tournament. If they can conjure up a win in their opening match against Ghana then they will put themselves in a great position to qualify.

Re: DVD Talk 2014 World Cup Pool

The THIRTY DOLLAR teams are:

ENGLAND (ENG)

Confederation = UEFA
How they qualified = Group H First Place, UEFA Group Stage
FIFA World Ranking = 11th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 9th
Odds on winning = 33:1
14th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Champions (England 1966)
Nickname = The Three Lions

Group D: (w/CRC ITA URU)

Background: It is safe to say that England are one the biggest underachievers in world football. With such a strong domestic game one would think that The Three Lions would have won the World Cup more than once, with their only success remaining the 1966 World Cup on home soil. They have not reached the Final since then, with their best performance back in 1990 when they experienced penalty heartache against rivals Germany in the semi-finals. Many believed that the Golden Generation of 2006 and 2010 would be successful, however England failed in both tournaments. The present team no longer boats such a multitude of big names but with expectation low they may surprise a number of people in Brazil.

Group Analysis: In contrast to recent World Cup tournaments England have been handed an extremely difficult group in Brazil. Over the years suppers have become accustomed to seeing The Three Lions struggle through to the knockout stages, with the likes of USA and Algeria taking points off Fabio Capello's men in South Africa. However, this time around England have been drawn against Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica, which is undoubtedly one of the Group of Deaths in South America. Italy beat England on penalties at Euro 2012, while Uruguay are a threat to any team due to their lethal strike force that contains Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani.

NETHERLANDS (NED)

Confederation = UEFA
How they qualified = Group D First Place, UEFA Group Stage
FIFA World Ranking = 15th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 11th
Odds on winning = 28:1
10th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Second Place (Germany 1974, Argentina 1978, South Africa 2010)
Nickname = Oranje, Clockwork Orange

Group B: (w/AUS CHI ESP)

Background: Holland were the first team from Europe to qualify for the 2014 World Cup after winning their group with ease, recording nine wins and a draw from their 10 matches. Considering the great teams they have had over the years it is a surprise that they have never been crowned World Champions, and they will no doubt still be reeling from their defeat to Spain in the 2010 Final in South Africa. However, they have the chance to avenge this loss after the teams were drawn in the same group at Brazil 2014.

Group Analysis: Holland have progressed past the group stages of the World Cup in their last seven appearances in the competition. However, will be up against it this time around having drawn Spain, Chile and Australia in Group B. The "Group of Death" promises to be an enthralling affair, with the potential to throw up a surprise or two. It is vital that they get a result in their opening game against Spain otherwise they will be under immense pressure in their two remaining games.

SWITZERLAND (SUI)

Confederation = UEFA
How they qualified = Group E First Place, UEFA Group Stage
FIFA World Ranking = 8th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 22nd
Odds on winning = 100:1
10th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Quarter-Finals (Italy 1934, France 1938, Switzerland 1954)
Nickname = Schweizer Nati ("Swiss National Team")

Group E: (w/ECU FRA HON)

Background: Switzerland have appeared in nine World Cup Finals, including the last two. They have reached the quarter-finals on three occasions between 1934 and 1954 but have failed to progress past the last-16 since then. They produced an excellent display in qualification for the 2010 World Cup as they secured an automatic spot to South Africa by winning their group. In their opening game they stunned the hot favourites Spain with a shock 1-0 win. However, they were then defeated by Chile and could only get a point off Honduras, meaning they exited the tournament at the group stage.

Group Analysis: Switzerland failed to make it through to the knockout stages in South Africa meaning they will be gunning to make amends this time around. However, history is against them with the Swiss only battling through the group stages once since 1954 when they hosted the tournament on home soil. They have been handed a tough group, but one they are capable of progressing from. They are joined in Group E by France, Ecuador and Hondurus.

Re: DVD Talk 2014 World Cup Pool

The THIRTY-FIVE DOLLAR teams are:

FRANCE (FRA)

Confederation = UEFA
How they qualified = Defeated Ukraine, UEFA Playoff Round
FIFA World Ranking = 19th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 7th
Odds on winning = 22:1
14th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Champions (France 1998)
Nickname = Les Bleus ("The Blues")

Group E: (w/ECU HON SUI)

Background: The French were in the very first World Cup and it was a long time before they made it to the finals again, that came in the 1982 World Cup where they gained a creditable 4th place finish. In the 1986 World Cup they went one better coming 3rd so they are experienced in the latter stages of the tournament so can never be ruled out. In South Africa France experienced a whirlwind controversy when the players decided to boycott training. They were never at their best and were sent home early, failing to qualify from their group, as they were dumped out with just one point to their name.

Group Analysis: France finished runners-up to Spain in qualifying, meaning they head to go through the play-offs. Disaster struck when they were defeated 2-0 by Ukraine in the first-leg, however to their credit they managed to storm back and win the tie and this book their place in Brazil. France have been rewarded with a very satisfying group containing Switzerland, Ecuador and Honduras, meaning they will be expected to progress with ease, although nothing is ever simply with Les Bleus.

ITALY (ITA)

Confederation = UEFA
How they qualified = Group B First Place, UEFA Group Stage
FIFA World Ranking = 9th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 12th
Odds on winning = 25:1
18th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Champions (Italy 1934, France 1938, Spain 1982, Germany 2006)
Nickname = Gli Azzurri ("The Blues")

Group D: (w/CRC ENG URU)

Background: Italy are well known for the sophistication of their play and ability to keep control of the ball as they build from the back in a very deliberate manner. The Azzurri have always had great defenders making them a very difficult team to break down when they take the lead. They won their fourth World Cup back in 2006, which is a record for a European country, while they finished runners-up to Spain at the 2012 European Championships, which saw them bounce back from their woeful performance at the last World Cup. One of Italy's World Cup stars of the past was Paulo Rossi who really turned it on in the 1982 World Cup and he alone almost single-handedly beat Brazil on their way to winning this World Cup that year. Rossi had three efforts on target all game against the Brazilians and scored three goals one of the all time great World Cup performances.

Group Analysis: Italy are involved in one of the most eagerly anticipated groups of the tournament. The Azzurri have been drawn alongside England, Uruguay and Costa Rica in what promises to be a competitive Group E. Italy's record and experience makes them the narrow favourites but in truth anything can happen, with both England and Uruguay also in contention for the top two spots.

PORTUGAL (POR)

Confederation = UEFA
How they qualified = Defeated Sweden, UEFA Playoff Round
FIFA World Ranking = 3rd
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 14th
Odds on winning = 28:1
6th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Third Place (England 1966)
Nickname = A Seleção ("The Selected")

Group G: (w/GER GHA USA)

Background: Portugal have an excellent recent record at major tournaments, although they are yet to win either the World Cup or European Championships. However, with Cristiano Ronaldo in their ranks they are always a threat and they will be gunning to go all the way in Brazil and win the biggest tournament of them all. Portugal once again struggled through qualifying after finishing second to Russia in their European group. However, they impressed during their play-off win over Sweden, and now have a good a chance as any in the 2014 World Cup Outright Odds.

Group Analysis: Portugal have been handed a daunting looking Group G after being drawn alongside Germany, Ghana and the United States. It is arguably the most open of all eight groups with all four teams fully capable of making it into the top-two spots. Germany, of course will start as the favourites. They have a stunning record in major tournaments and their current squad is jam-packed full of superb players in all positions. Portugal will be most people's picks to join them in the next round, although they will have to be on top of their game as Ghana and USA will provide a stiff challenge.

Re: DVD Talk 2014 World Cup Pool

I'll spoiler these next three posts, since I'm copying info from much later in this thread up to the top to make it easier to find. Don't read this unless you already know how the reveals for the Final Seven squads played out.

Spoiler:

The FORTY DOLLAR teams are:

BELGIUM (BEL)

Confederation = UEFA
How they qualified = First Place Group A, UEFA Group Phase
FIFA World Ranking = 12th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 13th
Odds on winning = 18:1
12th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Fourth Place (Mexico 1986)
Nickname = Rode Duivels ("Red Devils")

Group H: (w/ALG KOR RUS)

Background: Belgium are yet to win the World Cup or even reach the Final, with their highest finish a 4th place standing back at Mexico 1986. They have since reached the last-16 on three occasions, while 2014 will surprisingly mark their first appearance in the Finals since back in 2002. However, Belgium are currently enjoying one of the most exciting times in their history, with great things expected from their "Golden Generation" at the 2014 World Cup. They head to Brazil flowing with confidence following an exceptional qualifying campaign, which saw them dominate Group A, with eight wins and two draws. They have emerged as many people's outsiders to cause a stir in South America, and after being handed a reasonable draw they will be confidence of progressing through to the knockout stages.

Group Analysis: Marc Wilmots’ side blitzed through qualifying and will now be expected to come out on top of Group H, which features Russia, South Korea and Algeria. Belgium's squad is jam-packed with a plethora of Premier League stars who should be far too strong for the likes of South Korea and Algeria. Fellow European side Russia will be the real test, with their duel set for 22 June, which promises to be an enthralling match between two countries with real potential.

COLOMBIA (COL)

Confederation = CONMEBOL
How they qualified = Third Place (behind ARG) - CONMEBOL Group Stage
FIFA World Ranking = 5th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 6th
Odds on winning = 28:1
5th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Round of 16 (Italy 1990)
Nickname = Los Cafeteros ("Those Coffee Growers")

Group C: (w/CIV GRE JPN)

Background: Colombia will be taking part in their first World Cup since France 1998 this summer, following a 16 year absence. The South American side head to Brazil in a confident mood following a successful qualifying campaign which saw them finish second behind zone winners Argentina. They possess a number of immense players, including main man Radamel Falcao who faces a race against time in order to be fit in time. The Monaco player will be crucial to his side's chances of going far this summer, and the whole country will currently have their fingers crossed that he recovers before their opening game.

Group Analysis: As one of the top ranked sides Colombia were placed in Pot 1 for the 2014 World Cup Draw. They proceeded to be drawn in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, Greece and Japan, which they will be reasonably content with. The Coffee Growers are the bookmakers favourites to progress but will be wary of the threat each of the other teams possess, especially the Ivory Coast who they face in their second game.

URUGUAY (URU)

Confederation = CONMEBOL
How they qualified = Defeated Jordan, CONMEBOL-AFC Interzonal Playoff
FIFA World Ranking = 6th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 8th
Odds on winning = 25:1
12th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Champions (Uruguay 1930, Brazil 1950)
Nickname = La Celeste ("The Sky Blue One")

Group D: (w/CRC ENG ITA)

Background: Uruguay have a great history in the World Cup and, after reaching the semi-finals of South Africa 2010 and winning the 2011 Copa America, they will be looking to strike gold in South America in 2014. Uruguay were the first ever hosts of the World Cup and also hold the honour of being the very first winners of the tournament, which they won again for a second time in the 1950 World cup Final. Their success in the 1930 World Cup was a fantastic occasion for those that were there to experience it the atmosphere was electric as many thousands of who came to see the start of what is now the biggest sports event in the World and they went on to beat Argentina 4-2.

Group Analysis: It came as somehwat of a surprise to see Uruguay struggle through qualifying. They could only manage fifth spot in the South American zone, which meant they had to go through the play-offs. In the end the thrashed Jordan 5-0, but they know the competition will be much fiercer in Brazil this summer. They have been been placed in one of the most competitive groups (D) alongside Italy, England and Costa Rica. The battle for the top-2 spots is likely to be a three-horse race between themselves, England and Italy, and it promises to be an enthralling one between three top sides.

Re: DVD Talk 2014 World Cup Pool

Spoiler:

The FIFTY DOLLAR teams are:

ARGENTINA (ARG)

Confederation = CONMEBOL
How they qualified = First Place - CONMEBOL Group Stage
FIFA World Ranking = 6th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 2nd
Odds on winning = 9:2 (4.5:1)
16th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Champions (1978 Argentina, 1986 Mexico)
Nickname = La Albiceleste ("The White and Sky Blue")

Group F: (w/BIH IRN KOR)

Background: Argentina have competed in four World Cup Finals, winning two and losing two. They contested the very first World Cup against Uruguay in 1932 where they lost 4-2, but won the famous trophy in 1978 and then again in 1986, although they lost in the Final four years later. Argentina won their first ever World Cup in the 1978 Final, where they beat Holland on home soil in what was a tournament full of great football and spectator enjoyment. Mario Kempes was the star of the show that year but the Argentina player that come to light in later years was the legendary Diego Maradona, who was the inspiration behind their second 1986 World Cup win.

Group Analysis: Argentina have great flair and are World beaters on their day but they also can have temperamental issues and sometimes this lets them down when the going gets tough. They will be determined to distinguish this perception and go all the way in Brazil, and they will be relatively content with their draw, having been placed in Group F alongside Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iran and Nigeria.

SPAIN (ESP)

Confederation = UEFA
How they qualified = First Place Group I, UEFA Group Phase
FIFA World Ranking = 1st
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 3rd
Odds on winning = 13:2 (6.5:1)
14th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Champions (South Africa 2010)
Nickname = La Furia Roja ("The Red Fury"), La Furia ("The Fury")

Group B: (w/AUS CHI NED)

Background: The current European and World Cup holders head to Brazil on the hunt for their fourth major trophy in a row. Spain have been on a stunning roll since 2008, having won two European Championships, with a World Cup sandwiched inbetween. Back in South Africa 2010 they finally won their long overdue first World Cup, beating Holland 1-0 in a srappy final. Many punters and experts believe that they will triumph once again in Brazil and become the first team to win back-to-back World Cups since Brazil (1958 & 1962), however the competition is fiercer than ever this time around, with a numbr of countries in the mix for glory.

Group Analysis: Spain lost their opening game in 2010 but stormed back and finally got their hands on the world's most famous trophy after years of hurt. Their victory in the European Championships was a huge confidence booster and they are now enjoying a Golden Era. Their previous best showing at a World Cup was fourth place way back in Brazil 1950. They have been handed a tricky Group B in Brazil with 2010 runners-up Netherlands, Chile and Australia. The defending champions may be the favourites to progress but if they stutter against Holland in their first game then they will be right up against it.

GERMANY (GER)

Confederation = UEFA
How they qualified = First Place Group C, UEFA Group Phase
FIFA World Ranking = 2nd
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 4th
Odds on winning = 11:2 (5.5:1)
18th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Champions (1954 1974 1990)
Nickname = DFB-Elf ("DFB Eleven"), Die Mannschaft ("The Team")

Group G: (w/GHA POR USA)

Background: Germany have an impressive World Cup record, winning the famous golden trophy three times, while they have been runners-up on four occasions. Joachim Löw's men unsurprisingly stormed through qualification, recording nine wins and a draw from their 10 matches, with only Sweden taking points off them. Germany's squad is brimming with talent making them one of the biggest threats from Europe, and they will be expected to go far in South America. Germany qualified with relative ease for the 2010 World Cup and they headed to South Africa with every chance of picking up the trophy for the 4th time. The Germans were in the Final in 2002 and the Semi-Finals in 2006 so have been in good form at recent tournements which has led many punters and bookies to believe that 2010 could have been their time once again. In the end Germany were knocked out by the eventual winners Spain in the semi-finals but they will be pleased with their overall performance which included a 4-1 thrashing of rivals England, and a 4-0 thumping of Argentina.

Group Analysis: Germany also seem to whiz through the group stages, however they may find life slightly more troublesome this time around. Although the favourites to win Group G, they will have to battle past Portugal, Ghana and the USA, who all made it through to the knockout stages in 2010.

Re: DVD Talk 2014 World Cup Pool

Spoiler:

The SEVENTY DOLLAR team is:

BRAZIL (BRA)

Confederation = CONMEBOL
How they qualified = Host
FIFA World Ranking = 4th
ESPN Soccer Power Index = 1st
Odds on winning = 11:4 (2.75:1)
20th appearance in Finals
Previous Best = Champions (1958 1962 1970 1994 2002)
Nickname = Canarinho ("Little Canary"), A Seleção ("The Selection")

Group A: (w/CMR CRO MEX)

Background: Brazil are without doubt the team that sets the standards in world football. They have a great record in World Cups, having been crowned World Cup Winners five times since the tournament commencement in 1930. In addition they are the only team to qualify for every World Cup, having amassed 19 appearances to date. Brazil have brought some of the best players to the world stage, including the likes of Pele, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. Their style of play is absolutely brilliant and they are the team that every football fan is happy to pay money to go and see. Brazil won the 2013 Confederations Cup in emphatic style with a 3-0 victory against World Champions Spain, and that comprehensive win means they are now the firm favourites to lift the World Cup next summer, while it also shows they can handle to overwhelming pressure and expectation.

Group Analysis: Brazil, as hosts, were pitted in Group A, where they will do battle with Croatia, Cameroon and Mexico, a group they should dominate. Many believe that Brazil can and will finish atop the group undefeated.
