The February 2014 Pro Wrestling Thread: Elimination Chamber

On February 23rd, WWE brings us its fifth annual Elimination Chamber ppv. So far, this is the card...

Randy Orton (c) vs. John Cena vs. Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan vs. Antonio Cesaro vs. Christian in the Elimination Chamber
The Wyatt Family vs The Shield in a six-man tag match

LOTS of controversy surrounding WWE these days with Daniel Bryan's Yes Movement and CM Punk's shocking walkout. I'll say one thing...WWE has gotten people talking about the product a lot more recently than I'd seen in a while.

Re: The February 2014 Pro Wrestling Thread: Elimination Chamber

- Another one of CM Punk's issues with WWE is that he feels like he hasn't been fairly compensated for events in the past and that so far, nobody in the company has told him or anyone else how they will be compensated for this year's WrestleMania and other pay-per-views with the Network launching.

It's also said that Punk has been upset that no matter what happens, he will never be pushed as the John Cena-caliber face of the company. Punk at one point pushed hard to go heel again despite the fact that he was super over as a babyface because he realized that as a babyface, he'll always be number two behind Cena. His idea was to turn heel so at least he would be number one as a heel.

It's worth noting that there are a small number of people within WWE who believe the whole situation is a work but the vast majority do not. Those who believe it's legit are very much split on things. Half of the people seem to think that Punk stood up for himself and did the right thing and should be applauded. The other half feel he's being a baby about everything and shouldn't have walked out, especially without giving WWE time to write him out of the storylines. It's said to be a very polarizing issue within the company.

Re: The February 2014 Pro Wrestling Thread: Elimination Chamber

I'd read that there was to be a talent meeting to discuss the payout changes due to the network's launch. Supposedly, it was canceled and not rescheduled.

As for the question of whether it is a work or not, I feel like it is not. However, I do feel that Punk will be back, but he will be away for a decent amount of time.

I find it interesting that Bryan is getting coverage on CNN. If this is all a work and WWE plans to have him in the main event at Mania, they're doing it well.

Re: The February 2014 Pro Wrestling Thread: Elimination Chamber

- The CM Punk situation is personally being handled by Vince McMahon himself, as opposed to Triple H or WWE's Talent Relations department.

WWE officials are not happy at all about the story getting out and there being a big deal publicly. The hope was to keep it as an internal issue and deal with it within the company.

There were meeting with the WWE creative team all last week discussing WrestleMania XXX plans if Punk does not return, as well what to do with him if he does come back. The meetings were not as a result of Punk walking out specifically but also a by-product of fans rejecting segments and the reaction for Daniel Bryan at the Royal Rumble. A source noted that "anything is possible" at this point in regards to the WrestleMania XXX card and nothing should be considered official or locked in with the exception of John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt.

Punk has been such a big part of WWE stories that there was no way his absence on television wouldn't have been noticed. I guess they could've used an injury line but why would they think Punk would've gone along with that if their negotiations weren't going well?

Then again, this is the company that doesn't get why fans aren't excited about a Batista/Orton main event.

Re: The February 2014 Pro Wrestling Thread: Elimination Chamber

The more I hear and the more I think about this, the more I am convinced it is a work.

I have always heard and believed the stories about Vince being a complete a-hole on a power trip, but some interviews I have listened to recently paint that as a complete story line. I find it impossible to believe a company that effed-up could be as successful as the WWE is. Sure, egos can sometimes get in the way, but there is no way the WWE execs cannot see how hot Daniel Bryan and CM Punk are in comparison to the "push" guys on the roster. It was one thing to strip Daniel Bryan of the belt and to continue to screw him over, but at least he was acknowledged as being what the fans wanted to see. Ignoring him and relegating him to the mid-card is disconcerting. If this is a story-line, they may have beat this horse beyond death and may have gone too far for fans.

If it's a work, I hope it's leading up to Bryan vs Punk. That would be an awesome Wrestlemania match.

Re: The February 2014 Pro Wrestling Thread: Elimination Chamber

- WWE's production team is well aware that there might be CM Punk chants at tonight's RAW from Omaha but they expect it to be more of a problem when they get closer to the Northeast part of the country and actually in Chicago. They don't see Omaha as a hotbed of "internet fans."
Instant CM Punk chant when Orton starts talking

- Also from backstage at RAW today, there is no update on John Cena's status after he was pulled from Sunday's WWE live event due to an eye injury but there is major concern within WWE that WrestleMania XXX is already "falling off the rails" in regards to top talents.

Is that Stephanie's voice on the WWE Network countdown spot? Sounds like it.

Aside from chanting what they shouldn't , this isn't a very lively crowd.

Since next week's Raw is from L.A., I wonder if an appearance by Rock is possible?

WWE writers - "Hey, let's make everyone forget about CM Punk. How about we have Ryder face off against Titus?"

They got Batista out of there pretty fast. I notice it didn't take long for the crowd to start chanting something before ADR made his entrance.

Betty White? I have a feeling we're in store for a segment with her and the Divas.

Re: The February 2014 Pro Wrestling Thread: Elimination Chamber

Poor Emma. That was a disaster.

She's actually quite good in NXT. But her character got over because there was a progression to it. Her awful dancing was intentionally annoying (she was a heel at first). But she gradually got over because of her in ring work, and her clutzy/goofiness was adorable. It's not really surprising that just pushing the dance right off the bat with no context didn't work.

Re: The February 2014 Pro Wrestling Thread: Elimination Chamber

I have seen Emma in person (ironically, I had my photo taken with both Summer Rae and Emma at the same event), and she is talented in the ring. I was hoping they would do something special with her when she finally appeared on a major program rather than just making her look like some goof out of the audience.

If Punk were to come back only as a color commentator and was paired each week with AJ Lee, I would tune in loyally .

Like The Towering Inferno, with Vince McMahon in the William Holden role:
"The fire down on 30 can't get to us up here in the penthouse. Not in THIS building!"
Then an hour later, Richard Chamberlain falls screaming out the fucking window.

I wish the RAW crowd was like the NJ crowd from last year that crapped on everything that was spoonfed. The CM PUNK chant would've gone on for 3 solid hours.

Raw is in Chicago in March 3. WWE has one month to come up with something.

Curious what happened with that knee drop in the Aksana/Naomi match.

Re: The February 2014 Pro Wrestling Thread: Elimination Chamber

I give Omaha an A for effort on the chants, but only a C+ for an actual grade. It would have been a much better episode had it been a more lively crowd, and had the chants been louder and more persistant.

Live reports say the crowd was loud. I wouldn't put it past WWE to dampen the arena mikes.

WWE confirmed on Facebook that Apple TV would be getting the Network app on launch date. They deleted the post, but someone got a screencap:
