Re: MLB Thursday, May 3, 2012

After the game started by Hanson and Halladay ended in a 15-13 slugfest, it makes sense that today's matchup of Randall Delgado and Joe Blanton would be a pitcher's duel.

LaHair with another bomb. It would be nice (fantasy wise) if the Cubs could actually get a runner or two on base in front of him.

Normally, I'd laugh at the Cubs as well, but I don't like them completely giving a game to Cincinnati.

(Fantasy wise) LaHair & Pedro Alvarez have been really surprising me this season so far.

Ugh... Mariano Rivera carted off the field while shagging flyballs in batting practice (knee issue). It did not look good.

Re: MLB Thursday, May 3, 2012

Mariano Rivera has been injured while shagging flies during batting practice before the Yankees/Royals game. Apparently its a knee injury. MLB Network had video of the Yankees trainer and Joe Girardi carrying him to a cart.

What the fuck is the 40 something closer of the Yanks doing shagging fly balls in the first place?

Re: MLB Thursday, May 3, 2012

Apparently he ran into the center field wall while attempting to make a leaping catch of a ball going over the fence. I don't have a problem with him shagging flies, but I'd say this is overdoing it.

I haven't. Just read an ESPN news report, which now reads differently saying Rivera twisted his knee and fell to the warning track.

Re: MLB Thursday, May 3, 2012

Damn... that's probably 6-8 months and the first real significant injury of his career (though he did miss some games in 2002 or 2003).

That last save in Baltimore a few days ago could have been his last game if he is indeed retiring at the end of the year. EDIT: I wonder if this will alter his decision as many of the folks that cover the Yankees locally were convinced he was hanging the spikes up at the end of the year before this injury

I bet with a torn ACL he could still hit better than that dude on the Angels wearing number 5.

What an awful injury for Rivera. I'm not a Yankee fan but he was pretty much close to automatic as a closer. His performance didn't really fall off as he got older as well.

As a baseball fan, I hope he comes back next year but I can see why he wouldn't either.

The Yankees have pretty good bullpen depth though. So they'll just use Soriano in the eight and Robertson in the ninth.

No one wants to say it, but he's done. It was widely assumed he was retiring at the end of this year anyway. He was on the verge of tears after the game tonight when speaking to reporters.

Re: MLB Thursday, May 3, 2012

Wow, what an awful way for Mo to end his career. I mean, I guess there is a chance he tries for a comeback but if there is any athlete that has nothing left to prove, it's Mariano Rivera. I'm just upset we, the fans, weren't able to give him the send off that he deserves.

We'll see what the Yankees can put together this season. The offense should come out of it's funk, I'm not worried about that. CC and Kuroda are starting to come around and Nova will be fine. I'm confident with Robertson as our closer and Soriano in set up. Now might be the time to seriously consider Hughes to be your 7th inning guy. Hopefully Pettitte comes back strong (50/50 if you ask me) and Phelps can give them 5 decent innings every 5th day.

Looks like the "After Mariano" era officially starts. I'm not looking forward to it.

(Bad sports year for me so far. First the Jets completely miss the playoffs and make moves to continue to be the laughing stock of the league. The Knicks are a mess and are getting embarrassed out of the playoffs. Now the Yankees lose Mo. Smart money is on the Red Sox and Heat to win their respective championship this year.)

Re: MLB Thursday, May 3, 2012

Even if you don't like the Yankees, the right way for Rivera to end his career was with a handshake after closing out a victory. Wishing him well in his recovery.
