Re: MLB Weekend, June 4-5, 2011

Papelbon ejected and lightly bumped the homeplate umpire after giving up 4 runs in the 9th. The ejection came after a first pitch double that tied the game.

Should be suspended but the beauty of baseball is that even if he is, he'll appeal it, wait for a soft spot in the schedule and drop the appeal.

That's if the MLB league offices doesn't like lighten Papelbon's wallet a five-figure sum first. You NEVER, EVER touch an official on the field of play for any reason, even if you think the official is wrong.

One of those things that if I were "Commissioner for the Day," I would fix right away.

or wait until he's pitched 2 nights in a row, take the suspension and then it won't matter because he probably wouldn't have pitched that many consecutive nights in a row.

Makes it sting even more that the Reds blew a 5 run lead in the 8th. Both games on Fox, I got the Cubs/Cards. The Reds are not ready for primetime.

When Weinwright went down for the season, I thought the Reds would have a slight pitching advantage with the depth. McClellen, Loshe have been quite steller, not to mention Garcia. Westbrook has been good as well. Meanwhile the Reds opening day starter is in AAA, got Cueto back from the DL doing well, but Bailey is back again along with Chapman, LeCure, and Malloney. Leake kicked down, only to brought back up, and has done decent since coming back up. Shambles of a pitching rotation. Lineup is great, but if we struggle with this pitching, .500 here we come. Bullpen has been relatively good, but way over taxed. Poor Carlos Fisher, 3 straight extra inning losses.

And I was watching the Reds/Dodgers game on Fox. I only turned it on late in the game, so perhaps this was brought up in the broadcast, but I couldn't help but remember that Cincy/LA used to be a pretty good rivalry when they were NL West opponents.

I think the Reds problem is the same as it was last year. They've got no top of the rotation guy, just a bunch of quality arms. Makes it especially tough when you get to the postseason and face a shutdown guy (like they did last year in Halladay). The Cards face the same dilemma this season. The guys you mentioned have been excellent. But they really need Carpenter to be that guy for them.

In the 80s mostly I remember. I didn't get it so much being too young probably.

Yep. Relying on the limited, but somewhat stable success of last year's pitching, it's turning out disastrous on that front. Bronson Arroyo was supposed to be the Reds innings eater, and they picked up his option, but he's also been somewhat dismal. Many troubles.

ETA: missing Aaron Harang. I felt really bad for him last year. He carried us through the aughts.

I think I lost a few pounds of sweat at Kauffman Stadium this evening. First time I had been there since they renovations took place. The outfield concourse and seating looks great.

A lot of Twins fans are in town.

Happy to see that they bullpen didn't blow the game, and that the lineup produced despite the fact it was full of nobodies.

Great piece of hitting by Pujols in the 12th.

Glad you made it for a win B.A. They had some pretty great shots of Dinkleman's family watching his debut.

Great game by Albert today. I hope he's turning things around because I love watching him at the plate. Besides, it doesn't seem right that he is struggling when you have "bums" like Lance Berkman and David Ortiz tearing it up this season.

I'm not much on Ortiz, carrer-wise, but please explain to me how Lance Berkman is a bum. The man is 2nd all time in Sluuging % for switch hitters behind Mikey Mantle.

Re: MLB Weekend, June 4-5, 2011

I know it can be difficult to decipher tone and everything when reading something on the internet, so I used quotation marks for emphasis. I guess I should have used a [SARCASM!!!!!!!] tag instead.
I'm referring to the fact that there was so much talk two years ago about Ortiz being over the hill, followed by Berkman and his less-than-stellar stint last season with the Yankees. They are both currently playing very well and I hope they stay healthy enough to keep it going.
A baseball season has three constants: very good players struggle, the Braves lose and Albert Pujols steamrolls his way to MVP talk while hitting the occasional wall-banging single. He has appeared human in a contract year but has time to get back on track.

Good. It's about time someone called put Posey on this. I'm still trying to figure out how a guy who hasn't played an entire full season yet has become such an imPortent player that so many guys are calling for rule changes. How about the enforcing the rule that the catcher isn't allowed to stand in Front of the plate until he has possession of the ball.

And while it's easy to be critical of so many guys who have shared an opinion on the matter, it's hard to argue with a guy like Bench.

Vogelsong wins again for the Giants. He has given up 1 or fewer runs in his last 6 starts! Take all the time you need in rehab, Barry Zito.

Re: MLB Weekend, June 4-5, 2011

Nice little beanball war going on between the Nats and Dbacks... 4 batters hit and 4 ejections (2 pitchers, both managers)

Umps were kind of a bit goofy though... Werth got hit and they issue warnings (apparently Werth and Upton had been hit earlier in the series). 2 batters later Kennedy hits another guy, no ejection (didn't seem intentional). The next inning Upton is hit in a 1-0 game with a guy on 1st and the Nats starter is ejected (and based on his reaction it didn't seem intentional)... I'm not sure why the umpire thinks he's trying to hit Upton in a 1-0 game with the tying run on first. Later in the game a D-Backs reliever hits a batter on an 0-1 pitch and a runner on 2nd and is ejected (also didn't seem intentional).

The next batter up, Wilson Ramos, hits a 3run HR and proceeds to take over 30sec to trot (and by trot, basically just barely faster than walking) around the bases.... and was clearly taking his time. Got to think he gets drilled in the next series.

Upton has been hit 5 times in this series. That's why Werth got hit. Fuck the Nationals. And on the Dbacks continuing to hit guys after the warnings by umps, intentional or not. Even more to the Dbacks for coming back in the ninth and tying up the game. A win here would be a huge fuck you to the Nats.

Well, Dbacks just walked a run in but they got fucked on a bang/bang play at 1b that was called safe, but was really an out. They would've been out of the inning. We'll see if they have any life left in them in the bottom of the 11th. And there's a grand slam for the Nats. Thanks umps for handing Washington this game.

Just caught the end of the Cards/Cubs game on the DVR. Pujols with another walk-off!

Equally sweet was Theriot's game tying double off of Marmol and his former club with 2 outs in the 9th.

I saw Teriot's double after the Brewers game had finished. I was happy that Zambrano couldn't get the win.. but I was mad that the cards didn't lose! booo! At least the teams play next weekend. I may be at Sunday's game.
