Awesome. Mike Gminski, an ACC-loving dick who has already shit on the Big10 twice in interviews in the last few days. And Tim Brando, who has made it clear repeatedly on his radio show that he hates Michigan.

Except for undercutting Buck Williams and not getting called for it in the final seconds of the 1980 ACC Championship, I'm a big Mike Gminski fan. Plus he's a Dookie that isn't in the tank for Dook.

Have to pull for Morehead State in the play-in game. They've actually already played Louisville once this season, losing by 38 early in the year.

Pretty nondescript. He called 2 games the last couple years (since Enberg's voice can't hold up for 4 games in a day anymore) and he's the lead voice on CBSC. He'll be calling the day session in Philly.

The good thing is that they brought Bolerjack back and dumped James Brown, who was very rusty last year.

Re: College Hoops, NCAA Tournament 1st Round and Play-in Game, March 17-20

We don't have an offseason thread yet, so I'll post it here - first major coaching firing this year: UVA has canned Dave Leitao. Can't say I'm surprised.

Unless they can find a big name coach (which, given their facilities upgrades in recent years, they might), I'd say VCU coach Anthony Grant is a strong contender.

edit: he actually "resigned" , with a $2.1M buyout.

Re: College Hoops, NCAA Tournament 1st Round and Play-in Game, March 17-20

For those looking for opening round upsets for their brackets, here's a whole bunch of numbers I cranked using the field of 65 and their individual end-of-year Sagarin rating.

I took each teams' Sagarin ratin and applied minor deductions to teams from the Big Ten (-1.50 each, since they nearly always choke in the tourney), Pac 10 (-1.00 each, since they also choke a lot, but not as reliably as the Big Ten), and Big East (-0.50 each, primarily due to the fact that I feel their ratings are based mostly on performance against each other, and that when their style of play meets other quality conferences' styles, they often find it hard to adapt). I then took the difference in ratings between the higher- and lower-seeded team in each opening round pairing, and sorted those differences in ascending order. Those at the top of the list are more likely to result in an upset, those at the bottom not so much.

NOTE: Two of the games have a NEGATIVE difference, meaning that the lower-seeded team is actually a mathematical favorite to win.

-0.94 (9) Butler over (8) LSU
-0.74 (10) Southern California over (7) Boston College
0.89 (9) Tennessee over (8) Oklahoma State
1.40 (10) Maryland over (7) California
2.12 (10) Minnesota over (7) Texas
2.17 (12) Wisconsin over (5) Florida $tate
2.72 (9) Siena over (8) Ohio State
2.89 (11) Utah State over (6) Marquette
3.36 (12) Arizona over (5) Utah
3.66 (9) Texas A&M over (8) Brigham Young
4.01 (11) Temple over (6) Arizona State
5.04 (10) Michigan over (7) Clemson
6.24 (13) Mississippi State over (4) Washington
6.76 (11) Dayton over (6) West Virginia
6.85 (11) VCU over (6) UCLA
7.57 (12) Northern Iowa over (5) Purdue
7.74 (13) Cleveland State over (4) Wake Forest
7.80 (12) Western KY over (5) Illinois
8.89 (14) North Dakota State over (3) Kansas
9.82 (13) Portland State over (4) Xavier
11.40 (14) Stephen F. Austin over (3) Syracuse
12.09 (14) American over (3) Villanova
12.98 (13) Akron over (4) Gonzaga
14.42 (14) Cornell over (3) Missouri
14.89 (15) Robert Morris over (2) Michigan State
16.25 (15) Morgan State over (2) Oklahoma
16.72 (15) Cal State Northridge over (2) Memphis
18.36 (16) East Tennessee State over (1) Pittsburgh
19.25 (15) Binghamton over (2) Duke
20.34 (16) Play-In(*) over (1) Louisville
21.27 (16) Radford over (1) North Carolina
22.81 (16) Chattanooga over (1) Connecticut

(*) - Not that it really matters, but I used the better of the two play-in teams when running the numbers for this pairing.

PS - If you assume 10 upsets in the first round (the top 10 from the list above), then repeat this process with one-half (rounded down) the number of upsets in each subsequent round, your Final Four would be: Louisville, Memphis, Pittsburgh and North Carolina; with North Carolina beating Memphis for the title.

So you compared the Sagarin ratings and adjusted with your perceived historical shortcomings of a few conferences? lol

Re: College Hoops, NCAA Tournament 1st Round and Play-in Game, March 17-20

It's the kenbuzz ratings. Pete Rose uses them all the time when he makes his bets.

If anything, the Big Ten usually overperforms in the tourney (at least in the first round). I sell them short going in every year and they surprise me.

Here are the first round records of the major conferences over the last couple years: '08/'07:

BE: 7-1 / 3-3
B12: 5-1 / 3-1
P10: 3-3 / 5-1
SEC: 3-3 / 3-2
ACC: 3-1 / 5-2
B10: 3-1 / 5-1

It would be more useful to break it down according to seed. For example, if Arizona and USC lose this year, does that contribute to the Pac-10 choking in the tourney? Similarly if no Pac-10 teams make the Elite 8?

Re: College Hoops, NCAA Tournament 1st Round and Play-in Game, March 17-20

I might actually pull up some numbers later tonight. A quick Google search shows a guy that crunched some numbers and says that the power conferences should expect the following number of wins this tournament:

Big East: 16.35
ACC: 10.85
Big 12: 8.15
Big 10: 7.15
Pac-10: 5.99
SEC: 1.5

That's irrespective of a conference's historical performance and is just based on the average performance of the teams' seeds.

You've got it surrounded.

I was looking for a way to quantify things and not have to worry about using my melon to pick teams. I never win our pools anyway, so I built a spreadsheet and turned the crank to fill in my brackets. Here's the whole bracket using this method....

# of upsets by round: 10-5-2-1-0-0

FIRST ROUND (Chalk, except for):
(9) Siena over (8) Ohio State
(12) Arizona over (5) Utah
(10) USC over (7) BC
(9) Texas A&M over (8) BYU
(11) Utah St over (6) Marquette
(10) Maryland over (7) Cal
(9) Tennessee over (8) Oklahoma St
(12) Wisconsin over (5) Florida $t
(10) Minnesota over (7) Texas
(9) Butler over (8) LSU

(I also threw in (11) Temple over (6) Arizona State on my own bracket becuase they were next on the list and because I actually think Temple will win this game.)

SECOND ROUND (Seeds 1-4 win except for):
(6) West Virginia over (3) Kansas
(5) Purdue over (4) Washington
(12) Wisconsin over (4) Xavier <-- biggest upset of my bracket, per seeding
(6) UCLA over (3) Villanova
(7) Clemson over (2) Oklahoma

ELITE EIGHT:
(1) Louisville over (4) Wake Forest
(6) West Virginia over (2) Michigan St
(1) UConn over (5) Purdue
(2) Memphis over (3) Missouri
(1) Pitt over (12) Wisconsin
(2) Duke over (6) UCLA
(1) North Carolina over (4) Gonzaga
(7) Clemson over (2) Syracuse

FINAL FOUR: Louisville. Memphis, Pitt, UNC
CHAMPIONSHIP: UNC beats Memphis

DePaul would probably take him back with open arms. So much for him being Calhoun's replacement.

Re: College Hoops, NCAA Tournament 1st Round and Play-in Game, March 17-20

I haven't seen the local affiliate announce their Friday lineup yet, but looking at the games in that timeslot I'm guessing we'll get the Utah-Arizona game since there are no Big 12 games going on and both teams are fairly close regionally and the game is expected to be competitive. I'll be parked on my ass at a sports bar these first few days anyway, but hopefully I can record the UA game in HD to rewatch later if they win.

Should there be any surprise that the SEC team goes down here?
