The Australian Open - 2nd Week

So how about some tennis talk.

Who's going to win this Australian Open? How do you see this season unfolding? Will Rafa hold on to the #1 spot?

The "Big 4" have been rolling along thru the first 3 rounds with only Djokovic losing a set. A lot of experts are picking Murray to win it. Considering he's been the best player on tour since the last Wimbledon, they have a point. They have even argued he'll be #1 at the end of the year. This prompted Fed to shrug his shoulders and say "what has he won yet?" and Murray to reply he isn't scared of Fed (well he did beat him 4 times in a row after the US Open final). Rafa was completely out of gas at the end of last season but has looked great so far. Murray has demolished every one of his opponents and Fed was only tested in the 3rd set against Safin. He was sublime in the first 2 sets which prompted analyst Daren Cahill to note that this was the best he'd seen Fed play in over a year. So far, only Djokovic has looked beatable.

Plus, the "Big 4" are not alone. It's been a while since men's tennis has had so much depth. Joe Wilfred Tsonga is now #5 in the world and his French compatriot Gilles Simon is #6. Simon already has wins over Nadal and Fed. Roddick is at #7 and has been playing great and young Argentine Juan Martin del Potro has a huge game and sits at #8. Plus you have youngsters like Cilic, Gulbis, etc... And the always colourful Marcos Baghdatis is still in it, along with Gonzo who beat Gasquet in a 5 set thriller today (12-10 in the fifth). Here's how the round of 16 is shaping up:

Rafael Nadal ESP (1)
v
Fernando Gonzalez CHI (13)

Gael Monfils FRA (12)
v
Gilles Simon FRA (6)

Andy Murray GBR (4)
v
Fernando Verdasco ESP (14)

James Blake USA (9)
v
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga FRA (5)

Andy Roddick USA (7)
v
Tommy Robredo ESP (21)

Marcos Baghdatis CYP
v
Novak Djokovic SRB (3)

Juan Martin Del Potro ARG (8)
v
Marin Cilic CRO (19)

Tomas Berdych CZE (20)
v
Roger Federer SUI (2)

On the women's side, the #1 spot is still up for grabs. Venus, Ivanovic and Jankovic are already out. Sharapova is recovering from a shoulder operation and isn't playing. Serena is still a threat but if I had to pick a winner it would probably be Safina.

A nice story on the women's side has been Elena Dokic. She had been out of the picture for nearly two years suffering from depression stemming from family problems (her lunatic father and coach...) but she's back, and has beaten two top 15 players already.

Shame on tournament organizer for imposing a $1,600 fine to women wearing outfits they deem too "skimpy". This was apparently France's Alize Cornet's fault for wearing a very short skirt with "normal" women's underwear underneath instead of the usual bicycle shorts.

Women's round of 16:

Jelena Jankovic SRB (1) 1 4
v
Marion Bartoli FRA (16) 6 6

Nadia Petrova RUS (10)
v
Vera Zvonareva RUS (7)

Dinara Safina RUS (3)
v
Alize Cornet FRA (15)

Jelena Dokic AUS
v
Alisa Kleybanova RUS (29)

Carla Suarez Navarro ESP
v
Anabel Medina Garrigues ESP (21)

Dominika Cibulkova SVK (18)
v
Elena Dementieva RUS (4)

Svetlana Kuznetsova RUS (8)
v
Jie Zheng CHN (22)

Victoria Azarenka BLR (13)
v
Serena Williams USA (2)

Are there any hot women left?

I briefly checked out the DirecTV Mix Channel. Pretty cool if you're a tennis junkie.

In terms of hotness the Dementieva vs Cibulkova match would be your best bet.

As for the winners, I will go with Fed on the mens's side with Dementieva on the women's draw, especially since I can't pick my usual favourite, Ms. Sharapova.

Spoiler:
Quite the match going on here between Cornet and Safina. Cornet hits just about everything back. However, so far Safina has saved three match points.

Re: The Australian Open - 2nd Week

Fed comes back from 2 sets down to beat Berdych. He better play better than that against Del Potro. Roddick cruises in 3 and Djoker beats Baghdatis in 4.

Aussies go wild as unseeded Jelena Dokic's run continues. She beat Kleybanova in 3, 8-6 in the third.

Re: The Australian Open - 2nd Week

Yeah so much for the experts. Too bad because I wanted a long 5 set battle between Murray and Rafa so the winner would be out of gas in the final.

Anyway, Rafa is still in demolition mode and Tsonga went thru Blake in 3. These are the men's quarters:

Rafael Nadal ESP (1)
v
Gilles Simon FRA (6)

Fernando Verdasco ESP (14)
v
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga FRA (5)

Andy Roddick USA (7)
v
Novak Djokovic SRB (3)

Juan Martin Del Potro ARG (8)
v
Roger Federer SUI (2)

On the women's side, I hope Dokic continues to win. Great story.

Marion Bartoli FRA (16)
v
Vera Zvonareva RUS (7)

Dinara Safina RUS (3)
v
Jelena Dokic AUS

Carla Suarez Navarro ESP
v
Elena Dementieva RUS (4)

Svetlana Kuznetsova RUS (8)
v
Serena Williams USA (2)

And a funny bit:

MELBOURNE, Australia - Andy Roddick has laughed off a 16-year-old loss to Serena Williams, saying he was just a skinny 10-year-old while she was ''bench-pressing dump trucks.''

Williams said in a joking vein this week - and she includes the fact on her website - that her triumph over Roddick when they were pre-teens training together in Florida was one of her greatest wins.

''Any chance she gets, she just does it to get under my skin, and she does it very successfully,'' said Roddick, who has advanced to the Australian Open quarter-finals after a fourth-round win Sunday. ''She forgets to mention that it was 1993.''

Djokovic can't handle the heat... He looks like going to get a heat stroke haha. Roddick is just loving it haha. Aussie Open not wanting to close the stadium roof while the court temperature is 136 F.

Re: The Australian Open - 2nd Week

Yeah, not the first time Djoker has had problems with heat. But running out of gas after one set and a half... This isn't going to help his reputation of quitting matches for various reasons... I mean he quit a match in Monaco last year against Fed because of a sore throat for godsakes.

However, I don't understand why they don't close the roof in these conditions.

And it looks like we went from the "Big 4", back to the "Big 2".

Fed and Rafa have looked unbeatable. Roddick is playing his best tennis in years. It's been a great tournament so far.

Re: The Australian Open - 2nd Week

Djokovic-Roddick actually went off the temp gauge, thats over 140 F. Must have felt like HELL. That was an awesome contrast, though, Djokovic wilting, feeling it, and Roddick relishing, taunting. Djokovic's physical liabilities are disappointing- "My throats sore, I want to stop."- but he at least pulled off some bold shots and fought it out longer than even Roddick thought he would.

Spoiler:
So far so good, as the very lovely Ms. Dementieva rolled into the semis with a straight set victory tonight, (tomorrow). She awaits the winner of the Serena/Kuznetsova match, which Ms. Kuznetsova is currently serving for the first set.

Re: The Australian Open - 2nd Week

Murray and Tsonga. I don't know what Verdasco is putting into his Corn Flakes but he's playing great. But another Spaniard beating Rafa? I don't think so...

Simon actually played pretty well against Rafa. He had his chances in the 2nd and 3rd set. I can't really talk about weaknesses, but on that surface, Rafa leaves a lot of balls short and since this is not a high bouncing court, it's harder for him to pin opponents back with heavy topspin and he becomes attackable.

What's funny about Roddick is that everytime the commentators mention his 2-15 record against Fed, they follow it up with "but he beat him the last time!". About the only chance Roddick has is if he serves over 70% and hopes for tie-breaks.
