2008 US Open Tennis

Just wanted to get a thread started, have to run. No real shockers so far. Any predictions? Can Fed end the slump? Can Rafa complete one of the greatest years in history?

I almost started a thread last night while watching the superb 5-setter with Blake and Young.

Should be interesting to see how Fed does.

Yeah that Blake Young match was great. I was rooting for the kid. Oh and I want to set the "J-BLOCK" on fire.

Tough to call. Women's side is wide open. Based on recent performances, I pick Safina.
Rafa should be the favorite, but I'm still not completely sold on him on hard courts. Some have noted he looked tired after Beijing. He spent 3 hours on court in his 1st round match against a qualifier. When you're #1, everybody is gunning for you. Let's see how he handles that. I don't believe he will win this tournament. Fed? Who knows. His problems are more mental than anything else. Maybe winning a gold, even if it's in doubles did him some good. Plus, no more pressure of beeing #1. His string of consecutive grand slam semis could be in jeopardy, or not... Djoker is still a tad inconsistent. Murray is a legitimate threat. Should be interesting.

Djoker won the Girlfriend Olympics. He's going out with Paraguayan javelin thrower/bikini model Leryn Franco. They met at the Olympic village. Bastard...

Rafa (last night), Fed and Djoker all win in 3 sets and advance to the 3rd round.

Both Rafa and Fed are easily thru to the quarters. Stepanek had beaten Fed the last time they played so I was waiting to see that match to evaluate Fed's play. Well he played brilliantly. He's serving great and kept making incredible shot after incredible shot. Not saying he'll win this, but he looks like the 2007 Federer.

There's been a few 5 sets thrillers so far with Murray coming back from 2 sets down to win and that 18 y/o japanese kid beating Ferrer in 5.

Djoker has his hands full with Cilic, one set down and tied in the second.

Nadal in a tough match today with Querrey. Leads 2 sets to 1 but could very easily be down 2 sets to 1.

Andreev just took the first set from Fed. Still lots of time, though, and you never want to count Fed out.

Some good matches all around today. Djokovic survived in 5 sets. Davydenko and Gilles Mueller are in a tiebreak in the 4th set, 10-10 right now with Mueller playing for the match. Federer and Andreev in a 2nd set tiebreak.

Mueller advances to the quarters, and Federer evens things up with Andreev.

5th set Fed is being Fed again. Andreev put up a good battle while he could.

Tough matches today. Glad Fed came thru but you could tell his confidence is shaky. He played extremely poorly in the 1st set tiebreak and he had a number of chances to put Andreev away after that. But you have to give Andreev credit, he can really pound that ball.

Djoker had a tough one too. He looked half dead after the 4th set and could barely breathe... Robredo wasn't too kind in his post match interview about Djoker's alleged "tactics"...

Luckily for Fed he gets the qualifier Mueller next while Djoker will most likely get Roddick.

Roddick: Isn't it both of them? And a back and a hip?

Reporter: And when he said there are too many to count

Roddick: And a cramp.

Reporter: Do you get a sense right now that he is

Roddick: Bird flu.

Reporter: A lot of things. Beijing hangover.

Roddick: Yeah.

Reporter: He's got a pretty long list of illness.

Roddick: Anthrax. SARS. Common cough and cold.
Roddick talking to a reporter about Djoker's injuries.

I'm finally sold on Rafa.
His winners--although he didn't hit that many winners--were amazing.
My jaw dropped on a few shots.

For her to squander ALL those set points ...you would not see that from her against any other opponent.

The only thing exciting in that Verena & Serenus match were those intense tie-breaks. I expected the younger sis to win esp. since she has a chance to take over the top spot. Here's hoping an American will finally regain that No.1 ranking.
