When the game is 70-0 at half time..

We had a high school football game last friday where the final score was 90-0. The score was 70-0 at half time. Here's an article with the gruesome details: http://www.dailynews.com/sports/ci_4528023

So my question is.. what's the point of the second half? Why not just call the game and leave it at that? Or do you agree that the game should continue to be played out? Was there any realistic expectation that there could be some amazing comeback?

I would have supported ending the game when it became 50-0. Even 40-0 is approaching absurd standards.

That Golden Valley team sounds awesome.

I think the responsibility should lay on the head coach of the team taking the beating to concede the game. If they want to continue to play, no point in ending the game early for the kids on the other side who work hard all week in practice to play on Friday night. Especially the kids who probably got to play most of that game who usually don't get in.

If both sides took out all their starters in the second half and allowed the 2, 3, etc strings to play for some experience, that's about the only way I can see the point of playing the whole game.

Fuck no, you just can't end it -- there's point spreads and betting to consider. I had a C-note on Canyon -77 and I wouldn't have covered if we just ended it at halftime!

According to the article, the players who I assume to be the starting QB and RB threw three passes and ran seven times, respectively.

I would say there's a pretty good chance the reserves got quite a bit of playing time.

100 wouldn't be a record in high school or college.

40-0 at halftime is absurd? What about 38-3 in the middle of the 3rd Quarter?

I would rather lose 500-0 than be a pussy and quit.

It's got to be a state by state thing. Here in Iowa I think the limit is if one team is up by 50 by half and the game is done.

Agreed. I've never played on teams that have taken a beating like this, but no way in hell would I want to forfeit.

Gotcha. For some reason, I was thinking you meant a government/politics type of thing (well I guess it still is, but not what I was thinking at first).

I think a lot of states go to a running clock if the lead is big enough, which is smart. Keep the game going and avoids as much embaressment.

Here's the 3 highest scoring games in Michigan High School Football history:

Muskegon 216, Hastings 0 (1912)
Detroit University School 160, East Bay City 0 (1908)
Menominee 150, Kingsford 0 (1929)

Unless there is rules on stopping the game when the lead gets so big, the best the winning coach can do is to put in the 2nd or 3rd stringers and run the ball up the middle every single play.

Here in Michigan, when the lead gets to 35 points, it becomes a running clock.

Crap, no one is ever going to forget that.

My reply to the OP was going to be "Yes, if they're playing Northwestern."
