The Belmont Stakes

Date: Saturday, June 11, 2005

Distance: 1 1/2 miles

Purse: 1 million dollars

Field:

1. Afleet Alex, Rose, Ritchey, Solid favorite. 6-5
2. Giacomo, Smith Shirreffs, Looks to make amends. 7-2
3. Andromeda's Hero, Bejarano Zito, Another Zito dud? 12-1
4. Pinpoint, Velazquez, Zito, Sarava route to Belmont. 15-1
5. Reverberate, Santos, Russo, Crediable Peter Pan. 20-1
6. Southern Africa, Court, Puhich No star. 20-1
7. Chekhov, Stevens, Biancone, Dull in Peter Pan. 30-1
8. A.P. Arrow, Undecided, Lukas, Just a madien winner. 40-1
9. Sort It Out, Undecided, Baffert, Belongs with NY breds. 40-1
10. Watchmon, Undecided, Reynolds, Belongs in allowance. 40-1
11. Nolan's Cat, Guidry, Romans, A maiden in the Belmont. 40-1

I don't believe it will be an 11-horse filed - maybe as few as 7.

With a small field - the best horse generally wins. We know who the best horse is - Afleet Alex.

The Belmont always seems to be quite small. Although with both the Preakness and Kentucky Derby being large this year, I guess one might expect a bigger field.

I like the favorite Afleet Alex to win with Giacomo finishing a VERY close second.

You're really going out on a limb with that one.

I'll likely wheel Alex on an exacta hoping a longshot finishes 2nd. Also will put some money on Pinpoint to win.

What's so funny about that? You want me to pick a longshot even though I feel Alex will win just to make Red Dog on the DVDTalk message boards happy? It's not like there is a field full of great horses.

Relax. I was just making a joke.

Seriously, I just don't think there is much value in your exacta pick: Alex 1st, Giacomo 2nd.

Two also-rans from the Peter Pan are running in the Belmont - why, I don't know.

The winner of the Peter Pan (in track record time) is not going to run. Oratory's trainer said it was too quick a turn-around.

Best win bet (to make any money) is Southern Africa, IMO.

Jose Castellano may not be able to ride Watchmon today. He took a spill yesterday in the 10th race at Belmont Park. I haven't heard an update of his condition, but he was carried from the track in a neck brace. I imagine Bobby Frankel is a little concerned since Castellano is the jockey for Ghostzapper.

Anyone else think Nick Zito looks like an older Kevin Costner?

The race was over at the top of the stretch when Afleet Alex blew by the other horses as if they were standing still.

Barring injury - this is going to be a super horse - in company with Ghostzapper, Roses in May, Kitten's Joy, Megahertz, etc.

I wonder what Ritchey's future plans are for him are. I would imagine he will run in either The Haskell or The Travers. I don't believe he will run in the Breeder's Cup Classic, because most likely Ghostzapper and Roses in May will run. Who knows. If Afleet Alex happened to win the Breeder's Cup Classic, he not only wins a huge purse, but greatly increases his value as a stud.

Then next February, run him in the World Cup in Dubai as a 4-year old and get a whole bunch of money.

As it is, he's been a preety good $70,000 investment.
