O'Neal's Agent: Allegation Undeserving Of Response

POSTED: 8:47 am PDT September 29, 2004
UPDATED: 10:13 am PDT September 29, 2004

LOS ANGELES -- A report Wednesday stated Kobe Bryant told detectives investigating his sexual encounter with a hotel employee in Colorado that Shaquille O'Neal paid up to $1 million dollars to keep women quiet about similar situations.

O'Neal's agent told the Los Angeles Times that the allegation was untrue and undeserving of a response.

The allegation was reported to have been made while detectives were investigating claims by a 19-year-old hotel employee that Bryant had raped her.

Charges against Bryant were dropped.

A civil action is pending.

When I originally heard about this a month ago, I thought he was talking about Jordan!

What a jerk. After what he went through, you'd think he'd avoid such subject matter.

Yeah...actually the Big Nasty on the McDonnell-Douglas show have been speculating for months about why Shaq has been pissed off at Kobe during the year and brought up the fact that Kobe may have opened his mouth about the "payoffs". Keep in mind that the media had those transcripts that they were not allowed to disclose to the public, so they have probably known about all this for a long time now.

I have no horse in this race, but from what they said on PTI ...

1) It was waaaay back at the beginning.
2) It's conveniently not on the interview tapes.
3) Shaq was informed this before the season started

Yes, the detectives attempted to interview Radio concerning this, but reportedly he declined.

Yeah, apparently it was said off the tape, which hadn't named Shaq by name. It wouldn't surprise me, considering Shaq has a few kids out of wed lock.

O'Neal takes shot at Bryant as feud escalates

September 29, 2004
NEW YORK (AP) -- Separating Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal on different teams on different coasts has done nothing to lessen the animosity between the one-time Los Angeles Laker teammates. If anything, the feud is escalating.

On Wednesday, O'Neal dismissed as ``ridiculous'' Bryant's allegations that O'Neal had paid up to $1 million in hush money to various women and then took his own shot by saying, ``I'm not the one buying love.''

O'Neal made the remark over the telephone to a staffer at ESPN, the network said, after the Los Angeles Times quoted a police report as saying Bryant told detectives in Eagle, Colo., ``he should have done what Shaq does ... that Shaq would pay his women not to say anything'' and already had paid up to $1 million ``for situations like this.''

The statement came near the end of a lengthy interrogation about a hotel employee's complaint that Bryant had raped her.

The Times said it was unclear precisely what Bryant meant by his remarks.

Prosecutors dropped criminal charges against Bryant earlier this month at the accuser's request, but the woman has filed a federal civil suit against him in Denver, seeking unspecified damages for pain and suffering since the case began.

O'Neal was informed of Bryant's allegation last September, and the relationship between the two was cool throughout the 2003-04 season. O'Neal was subsequently traded to the Miami Heat.

``This whole situation is ridiculous,'' O'Neal told ESPN. ``I never hang out with Kobe, I never hung around him. In the seven or eight years we were together, we were never together. So how this guy can think he knows anything about me or my business is funny. And one last thing -- I'm not the one buying love. He's the one buying love.''

O'Neal's latter comment was an apparent reference to a ring -- reportedly costing several million dollars -- that Bryant gave his wife, Vanessa, after he was charged with felony sexual assault last summer.

There have been no published reports of O'Neal ever being accused of any sex crimes. He was charged with misdemeanor battery in Orange County, Fla., in 1998 after a 23-year-old Walt Disney World employee claimed he grabbed her neck, but the case was dismissed in 2000.

Your honesty surprises me. Kudos. Or as Usher would say "let it burn".

There's really no reason why Kobe had to say this.

Let's see, he's getting interrogated.

Cop: So did you rape her?
Kobe: No, but Shaq payed off girls so they wouldn't squeal on him.

Stephen A. Smith said something interesting. He said that you just don't rat out other players and he'll pay for it on the court next year.....from Shaq and other players.

you not liking Shaq is fine, but Kobe ratting out Shaq for no apparent reason is pretty messed up imho. In this case, Kobe is clearly in the wrong for ratting him out.

I sure hope Stephen A. Smith had to make payoffs. Those poor women earned it!

I agree, never rat out others because it will come back to you even worse. Kobe just signed it away right now.

Payroll...you would be suprised that MJ would do this? I would be suprised if MJ was clean.

It already came out a couple of years ago that MJ paid off a woman he had an affair with while he was married.

Oh no. I wouldn't be surprised if Jordan had done this, in fact it's a pretty well known fact that he's done this alot. At least according to the women (porn stars) that have squealed on him.

I'm surprised that it was Shaq that was implicated. He was one player that I had never heard being accused of this. Of course he wasn't married for many years, but had children.

By "this", what are each of you talking about? If you mean having consensual sex with women and giving them money to keep quiet, I bet most NBA players do that. If by "this" you mean non-consensual sex and then paying them off, well, then, it's a little different.

Why do these shitheads get married to begin with if they want to fuck different women? Wouldn't it be cheaper to stay single?
