So who do you think should get Bonds' 73rd home run ball?

Popov v. Hayashi

It was mentioned on the news a couple of days ago that Hayashi even suggested that they auction the ball and split the money, but Popov didn't want that.

giving it to the person that ended up with it would be a REALLY bad precedent to set
because it wont ever matter who catches a ball anymore.. there will always be a riot and the person that comes away will own the ball?

the person that caught it, should keep it

Popov. Hayashi bit some little kids leg and was punching Popov to get the ball in the pile according to eyewitness testimony. Seems like assault with a touch of robbery to me.

At this point, I don't give a crap. There was a horribly written article (IMO) about it in SI a few months ago.

I hope they both pay legal fees up the butt so they end up losing money instead of making money.

Auction it. I'm sure these guys are fans but if they sell it not only will they make a pretty penny but you're also selling it to a big Barry Bonds fan

does anyone believe that either of these guys would keep the ball as a souvenir?
as soon as someone has possession, their agent (yes, Im sure they both have agents working for them already) will have a buyer lined up

If it weren't so dangerous, I'd keep it as a souvenier for a few years and then sell it to the Hall of Fame for a reasonable price (maybe some TP tickets and a few Rookies). But it would cost too much money to ensure the security of the ball.

I haven't seen the video footage, but if there's clear evidence he caught it and had possession (yeah, think instant replay), it's his. If he bobbled it, then it's free game.

Where's the twikoff option?
Seriously, cut the ball in half and give each of them a piece. Let's see how much that's worth. Greedy bastards.

If you don't give it to the guy that caught it first you are saying it's okay to do anything it takes to take it away. The outcome the next time could be a serious injury.

Popov should get the ball. If Hayashi get the ball, I bet there will be many fights over a ball in the future.

true...but he will have to prove that he actually caught it. just because it hit his glove doesn't make him any more entitled to it than if it bounced off his head.

These two dumbasses should sell the damn ball and split it instead of feeding the lawyers. I saw a clip of the trial in SF the other day and Popov said that it wasn't the money. He refused to even split the earning with Hayashi after Hiyashi proposed the idea. Reporters then asked him would you sell it in the future if you get to keep it?
Popov: I'm not ruling out that option.
Sure , it's never about the money.
As far as I know, Popov never really caught the ball, according to footage. It went into his glove and pop right out.

what a lamer. they should just split it or for all hell, just give it to the hall of fame. why fight over it? hell as far as I'm concerned they would be lucky to get anything. It belongs to the field. in a sense, just because a ball goes out of the park, does that mean the field loses ownership of it?
I say keep this in the courts longer intill someone else cracks that record and the ball is just about worthless.

Both guys are greedy, I agree with Jackskeleton... it should just go to the HOF.

In a perfect world, this thing will eventually be finished and one guy will end up with the ball and nobody will want to buy it. Imagine all this fight for a ball that nobody wants to buy.

If only...

All I see are a couple of sissies who can't hold on to a damn ball. Therefore, I think that I should get the baseball.

hmmm.. i dont think hof is an option
despite what we think would be best to end all this crap

i think legally, it has to go to one of these two guys...

but I like the idea of huge court costs killing any amount of money they can get selling the ball

I love how everyone is taking the position that it should just go to the HOF, without compensation to the rightful owner, whoever it is.

Part of going to a game is the right to keep any balls that you catch. It doesn't belong to the field, either team, etc., but to the person who caught it. I think there is wording to this effect on the back of most tickets. If someone is lucky enough to catch an important ball, then they have every right to keep it or do with it as they please.

I find it hard to believe that all of you would just give it away to the HOF. I wouldn't. After the years of rising ticket prices and costs of going to a game, I think it is great that a fan would be able to make a little cash off of it.
