Rarely comes up on the board, and although I do not condone returns for any cash back type scam, I see no problem returning a copy of a DVD you dont want for one that you want at a store that will exchange for you. It happened all the time when I managed Music Stores. How do you feel about this?

Is it tacky? well, probably, unless it truely is something you received as a gift and want to exchange it somewhere. Does that mean you shouldn't? Only if you really care about being tacky... just check the stores policy - I returned a bunch of stuff for credit at bb and w/o receipt you're allowed 3 returns a year! (done on driv lic#).

Much tackier to return to a place that'll accept it back opened w/receipt - like software at microcenter =D

I didn't think any store would give cash back w/o receipt. I don't see any problem with exchanges, which I have done on a few occasions at Suncoast.

I actually struggle over this one. You are giving the store equivalent value for the DVD you want. But, on a visceral level, it seems tacky and immoral to me. Is it illegal? Probably not, as long as you don't tell the exchanging store that you got it there.

I guess, on a very rare, occasional basis, I might do it.

A while back, 800.com had a misprice of the 3rd James Bond set for $20. There were so many people who took advantage of the misprice that 800.com had to order additional inventory to cover it (which, btw is a whole lot nicer than someplace like Amazon nowadays which will just raise the price back to the 'right' price and ask you to ok the price change). Suncoast prices it at something like $135. My friend, who I alerted to the 800.com deal, decided to return her set for store credit. When we went in there, the return went just fine and the employee put the box set up on the shelf with 6 other identical sets. Obviously she was not the only one to capitalize on 800.com's misprice and Suncoast's easy return policies...

I think it is. If you return an item to a store that you didn't purchase it from, you're just adding one more item to their list of returned/harmed goods. One person doing it once doesn't sound too bad, but it's not just one person doing it once, it's lots of people doing it often.

By returning something to somewhere else you aren't just trading a DVD for DVD. You are adding more/different stock to their shelves, which decreases their profits. What do they do to make more profits? Raise prices.

You may see it as a straight trade, DVD for DVD, but chances are that the Barney DVD cost the store something different than the Braveheart DVD, and it's not straight across.

Do it if you want to, but remember it the next time you choose to b***h about high prices and no deals anymore. You've helped contribute to it. (The you doesn't imply YOU reading this, it's just a term, eh?)
