Stargate (Amazon Prime Video) -- Brand New Series
Amazon MGM Studios has greenlit a new Stargate series for Prime Video. Join creator / executive producer Martin Gero, consulting producers Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, Darren Sumner from GateWorld.net and David Read from DialTheGate.com to learn more!
Long before multiverse travel became a sci-fi staple, the Stargate franchise pioneered the concept of wormhole adventures across distant planets. What began as a single film in 1994 evolved into one of science fiction’s most enduring and expansive universes, spanning multiple TV series, films, games, and books over nearly three decades.
And now, a bold new chapter in the iconic universe is headed to Prime Video after Amazon MGM Studios officially greenlit Stargate.
Martin Gero, an executive producer on shows such as Stargate: Atlantis, Blindspot,Keep Breathing, and more, wrote and serves as showrunner for the new original series.
"Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a story editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television—it's written into my DNA," Gero says. "I'm beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase.
"For those who've kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith—this one's for you. And for those that are new to our world—I promise you're in for something extraordinary.”
Production details and additional casting will be announced at a later date.

Who is the creative team behind the new ‘Stargate’ series?
Gero is joined by executive producers Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters), Dean Devlin (Stargate, Independence Day), and Roland Emmerich (Stargate, Moonfall). Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, longtime creative leaders within the Stargate universe, will serve as consulting producers.Production details and additional casting will be announced at a later date.

Many fans of the old shows might be happy about the fact that they are bringing back the old producers. I don't like that notion at all. I really like the movie but I never got into the show. It always felt cheap to me. You may have hundreds of planets, but they all look like Canada. I did like Stargate Universe, but that show wasn't really beloved by the Stargate fans.
At least there is a big chance that the show will have a better look.

Wow - it’s been 15 years since SGU ended?!
I skimmed the video. I think they’re going to continue in the same verse so that’s good if not a reboot. Obviously a lot of flexibility on timing. Maybe they bring back a few cameos, but not necessary. It would be good if they could resolve the SGU plot.

I'd rather see the OG producers in an advisory capacity and let some fresh blood bring something completely new to life. You could still have it in the same universe, but it would truly be its own thing.

That's a budget issue and not a producer issue. The first few seasons were on Showtime and had larger budgets, IIRC. Once it went to SyFy things got cheap. I loved the show, but it was very much a show of its time.

Another thing that always bothered me was the fact that they recast the movie actors. Back then it wasn't realistic to cast Kurt Russell or James Spader in a TV show, but you didn't have to use those characters. Just have another team and you can sell me on MacGyver.

SG1 improved dramatically after S1. It was almost a different show, IMO.

I haven't watched enough of Stargate to have an opinion on the storytelling. I tried to get into the show a couple of times, but never got through season 1, but the adventure of the week structure didn't work for me, but I guess since some of the backstory of Stargate Universe was an ongoing storyline they changed that up. I didn't mind the stuff with the SG1 actors in SGU and was actually intrigued, but I just decided that SG1 wasn't for me.

I'm also one of those folks that really like the movie but just could not get into the series. I've watched more than a few episodes as my BIL loves it and will often have it playing in the background when I visit but it just didn't click with me.
A fresh take that respects the old canon could be a good jumping on point for folks like myself.

SG-1 was all kinds of awesome. The interwoven mythologies. The bad guy government spooks. The NID? Ronny Cox as the evil senator trying to shut them down. The iris shield and the thump thump of bad guys hitting it. One of the best was the super friendly advanced planet Earth becomes friends with. Years go by and it turns out they're evil. SG-1 has to send the warning message back in time through the gate to themselves never to visit it. Then the following season has an episode where they're planning to visit it. Thor and the Asgaardians. Things picked up with the discovery of other Stargates on Earth, Stargates onboard ships, and the giant Stargates in orbit you can send ships, an entire fleet, through. Great show all around.
One criticism, as someone mentioned, all planets looked like Canadian forest.

I guess Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin were just thinking bigger back then. When the show was released they had Independence Day under their belt and Godzilla ready to go. SG1 just seemed small in comparison and it kind of destroyed any chance of making a sequel to the movie, if they ever wanted to, since the show used the same characters.

While I do like the original movie I think it's a good thing that Emmerich isn't involved in a reboot. His way of movie making seems to be outdated. I didn't hate is Midway, but when he tried to get back to his roots with Moonfall he failed, like he did with Indepence Day: Resurgence. He produced and directed the show Those About To Die last year. That wasn't terrible but it wasn't Rome either.
Like I said, I would have prefered a completely new take. No movie, SG1, Atlantis or SGU canon. I loath canon as soon it get's in the way of storytelling. I don't care what happend in season 2, episode 5 more than 20 years ago. If you have a continuing storyline you need to have some continuity, but no everything should be incorporated into canon. Stargate is a cool concecpt, but the shows faded out 15 years ago, the movie is almost forgotten, just start over. Don't bring back Michael Shanks or Louis Ferreira. Battlestar Galactica did it the right way. They took the concept and made it their own thing. They brought back one actor in a completely different role, that was fan service enough.

I loved the Stargate Universe series. They should have continued with it and not bypass it in favor of some new drivel. I am disappointed. Bah! Humbug!

That's "thinking bigger back then?"
I've always loved the movie, but it's about as small scale as it gets. Spader and Russell were fine, but didn't really put any real mark on the characters to put them on some pedestal. Anderson and Shanks were much better suited for the roles.

I'll have to side with Ebert(?) on this one and his complaint for the movie that I've never forgotten. You have a literal doorway that goes anywhere in the universe and can creatively come up with anything your heart desires and they go with a desert with peasants and pyramids?

Re: Stargate (Amazon Prime Video) -- Brand New Series
I am really excited about the new Stargate show. They've got the right people running it, and I'm confident they will do a good job with it.
I've always thought that the show was better than the movie by a long shot. Anyone who judges the show based on the first season is missing out on one of the all-time great sci-fi shows. The show kept getting better up to the fifth season. After that it maintained a solid level of quality. And, for my money, Stargate Atlantis was even better.
I just hope we see Amanda Tapping playing general Carter in charge of the SGC, with Daniel Jackson and Rodney McKay making occasional appearances as special consultants. They can have other original cast members show up from time to time without being recurring. The show should focus on a new SG-1 team, and I'm pretty sure it will. I can't wait to see how this turns out.
