The 18th Annual Sci-fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
Guess what time of the year it is! That's right, it's the 18th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge!
List Thread for 2025 is HERE.
Dates: Dusk June 30-Dawn August 1st
Rules
Movies/TV shows should be labeled sci-fi or fantasy from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a sci-fi or fantasy label from one of those sites. Action/Sci-fi would be fine.
If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's sci-fi or fantasy or not, ask here.
Sci-Fi/Fantasy documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews. Documentaries include UFO and alien abduction type shows.
As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.
Use any counting method you prefer, as prize determination does not depend on number of items watched.
3 wild cards for all. Use for those shows you want to watch but know they really don't count but they're pretty close or borderline to counting.
Watching the movie with the commentary will count as an entry.
Watching multiple versions (theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie will also count.
Audio:
Sci-fi/Fantasy Radio
I'm treating audio harshly since this is primarily a movie/tv challenge. That being said, one episode, 4 hours with commercials, of Coast to Coast counts as one entry. It's the same format for TV, only doubled. The topic of the show has to be sci-fi/fantasy related, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem with Coast to Coast.
If you're listening to something without commercials, or can skip them, you're looking at 3 hours of audio for one entry.
1/4 entry = 45 minutes without commercials and 60 with commercials.
1/2 entry = 90 minutes without commercials and 120 with commercials.
3/4 entry = 135 minutes without commercials and 180 with commercials.
1 entry = 180 minutes without commercials and 240 with commercials.
*Exceptions:*
1: The Tarzan films are eligible to watch and count for the watch list, but not for the check list.
2. Superhero films. If they do not have a sci-fi/fantasy tag, they count for the watch list, but not for the check list. If it really has sci-fi/fantasy elements without the tag but you want to use it for the check list, feel free to ask here and I'll look into it.

Note that the check list is from last year and is NOT finalized.
Here are the suggested changes, please take a look and offer suggestions/opinions!
Christopher Nolan to director list? Only 7/8 credits that qualify. James Gunn? Roland Emmerich? Ridley Scott? Irving Pichel (7), James Whale (4), Curt Siodmak (24), Bert I. Gordon (12), Gordon Douglas (7), Byron Haskin (21), Robert Wise (3), Val Guest (16), George Pal (17), Jack Arnold (37), Joseph M. Newman (8), Mario Bava (20), Roy Ward Baker (29 - mostly TV but 3 or 4 films), Richard Matheson (8),
William Morgan Sheppard, Brent Spiner (does he have enough credits?) to actor's list., Christian Bale, Catherine O'Hara?, Carol Kane? Seth Green? Sebastian Stan? Donald Glover? Sean Bean?
Christopher Lee to Classic Actor list or regular? same for Alan Napier?
Philip K. Dick to Thank the Maker list? Robert Heinlein? Michael Crichton?
Start rotating Director list like Actor list?
Revamp Director list and Meet the Maker list. Reread page 7 for ideas/comments.
Add "watch a composer" list? Danny Elfman, John Williams? Is there enough famous composers to make an actual category?
I also don't have any suggestions right now for the "He's Dead, Jim" list.
Thanks!

Might consider Charles Band for the directed/produced/written list, too. I think he's easily got enough fantasy and sci-fi between directed/produced/written. Say, does producer include, associate and executive or just 'producer' producer?
The rest of the list looks pretty solid. A wide variety of choices helps makes up for any given choice with slim pickin's.

Re: The 18th Annual Sci-fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
Welcome back LJG (and everyone else). It looks like we have a few important decisios to make. First, I like the directors suggested, even a couple with only a few movies because they are good movies and I think we should be rotating them so it won't matter if we get a few in that are a little short. There are a few actors in the new group that have a small number of film choices but none that I would oject to. I would suggest adding the three to the thank the maker group, maybe take out C.S. Lewis (who effectively only has 3 movies that I know of) and have us select four from the group instead of three. I have no problem with adding a composer list of some kind, music adds a lot to movies. I would have no problem with adding Christopher Lee and Alan Napier to the classic actors list. I will try to work on a deceased list here in a few minutes.

Re: The 18th Annual Sci-fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
We had a rough year for deaths. I think I have 19 people that qualify so you might want to cut it down some. I already did not count any series or voice jobs (except for Disney or some Japanese ones) even though they are importat. It was the only way to cut the list down. Here they are with any notes I noticed:
Peter Jason (50)
Tony Todd (29)
James Earl Jones (19) - lots of Star Wars
Maggie Smith (15) - lots of Harry Potter
Ed Gale (14) - actor that played Chucky
Augus MacInnes (13)
Teri Garr (13)
Shannen Doherty (12)
Richard Norton (12)
Val Kilmer (11)
Joan Plowright (10)
Kris Kristofferson (10)
Bill Cobbs (10)
Jonathan Haze (8) - classic 50's and 60's movies
David Graham (8)
Jon Landau (6) - some Avatar stuff
Tony Roberts (6) - Star Wars stuff
Mara Corday (5) - classic movies
Earl Hollins (5) - classic movies
I hope I didn't miss any but Tarfrimmer already had a few I didn't have so I'm sure I did. I didn't always doublecheck numbers but comparing a Science Fiction list to a Fantasy list is a recipe for disaster when it comes to the count. That's why I suggest you look up some of these. I didn't just leave out the smaller number ones when they were in classic movies. I think they still deserve to go in but you can't just include everybody very easily. Of course, my suggestion is that these 19 (and any others someone suggests) goes in and then we select 4. You have Star Wars, Harry Potter, geeral movies and classic movies to choose from. The problem would be just selecting 4 which is a good problem.
Good luck with the directors and additional actors situation. It would be great if you could make up a director pool to pick from like you do Actors. Please rememeber though that we still need to pick our our movies for the challenge so if you could finish the actors or directors list early and announce it while you are working on other things it would help those of us who do the checklist (I can't be the only one). If I can help you with anything just let me know.

Re: The 18th Annual Sci-fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
I'm more excited than usual for this year's challenge as my last official day of work is June 30th. Yep - I'm retiring! July will be my first month of retirement and the timing couldn't be better as SF & Fantasy are my favorite genres (horror runs a very close 3rd and *lots* of SF titles are also horror so...).
Even with retirement I'll not spend all day watching SF/Fantasy as I *do* have a major task hanging over my head. We moved about a year ago and due to a back injury and 3 surgeries over the past 8 months I've not been able to get everything in the garage properly put away - I *want* that done so we can finally get our cars in the garage. I've finally recovered enough to resume working on the task. My plan is to spend ~4 hours/day on the garage and *then* watch movies the rest of he day.
I'll also "lose" about a week as my youngest grandson (age 11) is coming to visit for a week. We're a board gaming family and have planned spending most of our time playing board games. His dad, my son, is also coming and he and I will play board games in the evenings that week. My grandson *loves* the Jurassic Park films so we might watch a few of those during the week (my son also likes the series - me... not so much but I'll watch them if someone wants to). His dad is taking him to see the new Jurassic Park film the week before their visit so he'll be fully caught up when he arrives. I can also see me selecting a small group of SF classics for us to watch one during the day to break up gaming a bit.

Next year for the actor's list we should think about adding John Ritter. Consider Wholly Moses (1980), Stay Tuned (1992), The Flight of Dragons (1982), Real Men (1987) and that episode of Buffy. Americathon (1979) and Hero at Large (1980) aren't designated as sf/fantasy but feel like they should be included.

Okay, I think I have everything on here. Please let me know if you spot any mistakes, but I think this'll be our finalized checklist. I'll update everything in a day or so once I get a little feedback, but if you want planning time, the actor list for sure would be good to go.
The director list should also be good but it has the most change to it. I went back through and found all the directors that have been on our checklist in the past and added the few new ones as well to the google doc. I used a randomizer like I do the actor list and took the top 20, 10 of which are required to complete the list.
I did add a composer section. I updated the He's Dead, Jim and Meet the Maker. I didn't want to completely erase the most used ones, so I combined them into two lines rather than 6 and added new names. Figured it was kind of the best of both worlds. New options, but old favorites are still listed.

I can't update the o.p. at the moment but since I haven't gotten any comments, I am considering the checklist finalized. As soon as my internet is fixed, I will update it and the list thread.

I'm not going to be able to be very active this year, but I have a good excuse (that ties into Sci-Fi and Fantasy). I'll be in Orlando for 9 days (July 8 - 16) splitting time between Universal and Disney World!

Re: The 18th Annual Sci-fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
My internet is back up so as soon as I post this, I'll fix the o.p. with the updated checklist and add it to the list thread.
Have fun! I went to FL for spring break and did Disney-lite. We hit up Disney Springs, both Disney outlets and many, MANY consignment shops. I love the parks (and Universal too, though only been there once). I hope you have a great time!
Thank you for saying that! I sometimes wonder if the changes are doing any good or not and I appreciate your vote of confidence! I was looking at the first handful of checklists and thinking about all the changes while doing the director list and was amazed at how far it has come.
I know personally, I got a bit bored with the same names over and over again, so I really hope the new director format for the list works well. I've been enjoying the actor list a lot more since making it a random selection. I like knowing that the list I'm pulling from has good candidates (it can be hard to come up with new names each year) but that we're not limited to the same handful because that does mean you start watching the same films over and over. To me, that's just the opposite of what the checklist is there for-it's to get people to watch new films to make into old favorites! I know I've found so many films that I now love that I would not have if I didn't do checklists and want to check one more category off.
I also don't want the checklist to get too unwieldy, so just adding name after name wasn't my favorite way of adding new options either. I like being able to showcase a few new people every year, then add them into the rotation. Choices are great but sometimes it can be overwhelming and turn people off from doing the checklist which I don't want either!
I'm sorry it's taken me so long to comment on this but I was so busy picking out my checklist entries that I haven't had any time. You did a spectacular job on the upgrades this year, I know that took a lot of time and I really appreciate it. The Director's list is perfect, we knew we would have some directors with just a few choices but the change from the past was a breath of fresh air. Likewise, the addition of the composers was perfect, good choices that covered a wide range of movies and series. I'm sure some of the participants will have some additions for this next year but this was just the right way to start. The idea of keeping old favorites by combining them into two lines for the Thank the Maker was a good idea. I think the actors area is working out well with the randomizing. All in all, I think it is the best checklist we have had so far, with nothing that really needs to be fixed or added in the future but I'm sure you'll come up with something. I really appreciate the effort you put into the checklist. I know that everyone doesn't use it but those of us that do really notice the work you do on it. And what was nice for me was that I had worked up a partial list of movies for this challenge and I was able to work all but 2 into the checklist. It took a lot of time working on it but that is part of the fun for me. I plan to watch 102 movies (plus shorts) so I am looking forward to July.

I don't get to start for another hour and a half, but I never make a list. I like the spontaneity of not being locked into one certain thing. I'm planning on working my way through the entire Star Wars live action catalogue at the very least. Not a fan of the animated stuff. Also rewatching the Middle Earth saga, but outside of that, just winging it.

I have been thinking about doing a full Jurassic Park/World rewatch this month and finish it up with seeing the new one but haven't quite decided if I want to put that much time into it.

Honestly, I lean this way myself for the most part. I usually have a few films I want to watch at some point in the month but, in general, I'm a mood watcher. I have to be in the right mood for a film before I'll watch something.

I still have an hour before I can start, though it's been overcast and rainy all day so it seems like it's dusk anyway. But...I suppose since I am the host, I should follow my own rules!

I get that. Some movies I can watch over and over in a short amount of time, but most I need a break in between.

So, I started with an episode of Highlander: The Series, which I started months ago after watching the first two films. Loved this show back in the early 2000's, when I first watched it. Moving onto Star Wars Episode 1 once this is over. I can't sit through The Acolyte again. Ugh.

I decided to start with The Borrowers (1973 version). I bought a Fantasy DVD set at a thrift sale I went to earlier in the month with 12 films on it. For a buck, it was a no-brainer. Even if I just watch it once, it was worth it.
