Re: Snow White - live action (2025, Marc Web) - The spoiler filled review thread about just the MOVIE
Wanted to start a review thread to JUST DISCUSS THE MOVIE ITSELF.
The other thread was getting a little wild and OT. So please continue that discussion over there. I fully expect this thread to suck and not even reach a second page like my last review and poll thread for Moana 2. But I want to see what people actually thought of the movie itself. Is it hot garbage? Just meh? Or the best Disney movie since Mary Poppins? IMDB seems to be getting review bombed considering how many ratings it's received. Which is strange, I thought Rotten Tomatoes was the place for that.
I'm not planning on watching it any time soon. Probably going to just catch it on Disney+. All the controversy aside it just looks like hot garbage to me and not worth rewarding Disney with four expensive movie tickets. I give way too much of my paycheck to the mouse as it is already.

Probably a little late for this after a 68-70% drop this week...

...and massive amounts of discussion in the existing thread.
Not like this is a movie where you have to avoid spoilers.

Re: Snow White - live action (2025, Marc Web) - The spoiler filled review thread about just the MOVIE
Here are my thoughts on the movie. It got completely lost in all the other commentary. I had to unsubscribe from the other thread because no one was adding anything about the actual movie and Im so over all the other stuff.
I saw it in Dolby Cinema tonight. The showing was scheduled for 6pm and I walked in about 6:25 thinking that trailers would still be playing. But, no the movie started.
I'll just share a few quick thoughts:
The Good:
Rachel Zegler. I thought she was very charming and likable as Snow White.
Most of the songs were pretty good. I really liked "Waiting on a Wish"
The costumes and sets were IMO also pretty good.
The movie flowed pretty well. It's about 100 minutes before credits. It wasn't some bloated extravaganza.
The various animations and animals.
The Bad:
It pains me to say this, but Gal Gadot was pretty bad in this. terribly miscast. terrible singer.
The Dwarves. I didn't mind them as characters. But, they were just weird looking. They should have followed the playbook of Lord of the Rings of what they did to make hobbits.
The male lead "Jonathan" was as generic as generic gets.
Obviously this movie is not for the majority of this forum. I say if you have young kids, specifically daughters, this is probably a worthy afternoon matinee.

What did Zegler say again to make this movie bomb?

I liked the dwarfs and thought Princess Problems was the only halfway decent new song in it.

I can finally comment on my own thread now.
Wow. What a stinker of a movie. I promise I kept an open mind about this movie. I'm a huge Disney fan and I think the original is an absolute classic. Along with Disneyland, Mickey Mouse and Mary Poppins, I believe it's one of Walt's crowning achievements. It did not deserve this at all.
I'm going to keep the discussion on the movie but I am going to be pretty brutal on Rachel Zegler so I'll just spoiler it to keep some semblance of positivity here.
Rachel Zegler did a great job singing. She sure can sing. Good for her for being able to sing so well.
Gal Gadot certainly looked the part of the Evil Queen. I get where they were going here with their forced message about being "fair" both on the inside and the outside. So it makes sense within the confines of this interpretation on why Gal would be Gal and why Rachel certainly is not Gal. I want to know who TF decided to give Gal Gadot a song???? Like seriously?? Did you not have internet access during the pandemic? Did you not remember that whole Imagine debacle?? Why would you give Gal a song??? Just let her stand there. She did okay as the Evil Queen but she just can't pull off being a villain. She's just not threatening enough.
The dwarves.....man those dwarves. Well....Disney tried....? kind of. I mean once you get used to them they weren't that bad. Kind of like cat urine. Like some people that have a ton of cats just get used to the smell. It's kind of like that. But then they inexplicably get a sudden close up and you're like AAAGGGHHH!!!! But then you get used to it again. I did actually think they did okay with Dopey. My 6 year old liked him and thought he was cute. But why TF did they make him talk????!!!!! Why????!!!! Again forced messaging. Oh he's not really Dopey he's just bashful to talk (wait a minute....). So they didn't want to make him intelligence impaired so they made him shy. That's the wrong message. Dopey is perfectly happy being an idiot. There's nothing wrong with being an idiot. You can be an idiot and still bring value to people's lives. But no. They had to make him smart. So you have to change who you are to have value to other people?
Also, for the whole movie my wife thought he looked like someone but couldn't figure out who. Then finally figured it out that he looks like Georgie on Young Sheldon.

So the hero of the story is....Johnathan....TF????? Seriously Johnathan? Was there something wrong with Prince Charming? They could have gone with Henry (I had to google that). Johnathan just doesn't fit at all. Why not just call him Bob. He's as generic as white bread. No chemistry at all. Or was that the point?
That brings me to costuming. Wow. It was so bad. The actual Snow White iconic dress is not offensive. That's the best I can come up with. But it certainly isn't flattering and isn't anywhere near iconic. I really noticed it in her peasant(?) dress. Where they put stitching in the front for some reason. But the whole dress was the same material. It's stitching nothing. I don't notice costuming very much so it has to be so bad to just totally take me out of the movie. Then we have Johnathan. The hero of the movie. He's dashing and handsome right? No he looks like some Kurt Cobain wannabe with a fucking plaid hoodie. What the actual fuck??? And then, the resolution of the film. It's not their wedding, that would be too traditional even though everyone is in white. He wears a fucking white hoodie.....I give up. Who TF thought that was brilliant costuming. So I looked it up and it's Sandy Powell. She also did the live action Cinderella and Mary Poppins Returns among other films and I don't remember those movies being incredibly terrible so maybe it was the director or the executives who told her to make the costumes as terribly as you can.
It's not all bad. There were some parts that I did like. I can't think of them right now but I do remember thinking "Now that's not so bad." at least twice during the movie. You don't get to know them but the other bandits were kind of fun. The animated animals were pretty cute. The hedgehog was a wife and kid win. I like how they made the deer have that classic Disney animated look with the huge eyes. Why they couldn't make that work for Lion King I don't know.
The ending was great where she defeats the power of pure evil with the power of remembering people's names. Like Paul.
