The Drew Struzan Appreciation Thread (1947-2025)

I think many of us have a tremendous appreciation of Drew Struzan and his contributions to artwork and the movies. When we think of favorite movies, the images that come to mind first are often of his poster artwork. He's been very active in social media in recent years and has loved talking about his career and reflecting on his art.

You're encouraged to use this thread to appreciate Drew and his work, maybe post a favorite poster or two, and let us know if you own any.

Today, Drew Struzan's wife, Dylan, posted on social media that Drew is dealing with Alzheimer's Disease and is facing a more rapid decline lately. No more art, no more signatures, and life is more about keeping his life going than it is enjoying his retirement years. It's sad news, that's for sure.

https://www.facebook.com/drewstruzan

Good morning all. I’m Drew’s wife, Dylan Struzan. I come to you with a heavy heart. Several years ago, Drew was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. As you may know, the early stages are a slow progression of forgetfulness. This happens in the brain when the proteins in the neurons begin to fold improperly. They are called tau tangles. Neurotransmitters can no longer transmit a thought. Think of it as a log jam. Forgetfulness is often what we think of when this disease is mentioned, the brain malfunctioning. As the disease progresses, the hippocampus (seat of memory) begins to fail. Think of all the things you learned throughout life, simple things like how to stand (balance), how to walk, how to talk, how to control your bodily functions, how to make decisions, how to do most everything we do. The hippocampus forgets. It has been said this is the most vulnerable organ in the body. I can believe it.

Some doctors believe this disease is reversible. For years, Drew and I have used the protocols that are supposed to, at the very least, arrest the forward momentum of the disease to no avail. His body has continued to decline. He is “still in there” as they say. It seems that specialized brains have an advantage as their knowledge is part of the structure of the brain, not just an add-on stored in the brain. Nevertheless, the loss of coordination of moving the information from the brain to a functional expression short-changes abilities. Drew can no longer paint or sign things for you. He is not enjoying a well-deserved retirement but rather fighting for his life.

He hears all the comments you have left here on these pages. It encourages him. At first he was able to express his thoughts but as time progressed it became infinitely more difficult. I rely on our 60 years of marriage working as a team to remember for him. Jon, who posts many things here, relies on research in the many hours of interviews both written and filmed to fill in Drew’s thoughts. Drew has left a strong legacy of love and joy in the form of his work. It has always been a love letter of sorts. His aim was to make the earth a better place in which to live by creating something beautiful. But like a flower, his season is ending.

I and Jon will continue to curate Drew’s legacy. My vision here is to bring the creative community to the fore. That’s what our live streaming and videos are about. Many creatives sharing their craft with an insider vision of the job Drew was a master at juggling. I hope you spread the word that will help others enjoy true creativity. They call this the humanities because it is something unique to our species. Art is meant to be enjoyed. Drew always wanted his work to be uplifting. From your comments, I believe he has succeeded. It was always his mission to move art forward being deeply influenced by the great artist and his professor at Art Center, Lorser Feitelson who introduced him to Modernism, a period of artistic and literary experimentation that began in the 19th century. It sought to create new ways of expressing ideas. Drew was also influenced by the Impressionists, as you most likely see above all in his art, the vibrance of color. His drawing skills were informed by the likes of Michelangelo and Pontormo and those in the Italian Renaissance, Composition will always be foundational from Cézanne.

The love you send is received with appreciation and often tears of joy. Those of you who have been touched by his work are his legacy. Please keep sharing your thoughts and experiences. It keeps him smiling through these difficult days. Keep remembering for him. ~dylan

re: The Drew Struzan Appreciation Thread (1947-2025)

Here are the first five Drew Struzan posters that come to mind:

5. The Goonies

This one was up in our tiny little town's grocery store VHS rental corner. I would just stare and stare at it. The Goonies was the first movie that I saw in the theater twice, by the way.

4. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

While this isn't my favorite Indiana Jones movie, I absolutely love that poster. He took specific moments from the movie and made them really pop and come together.

3. The Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition

I love, love, love these posters and how they fit together. Gorgeous.

2. The Thing

It's specifically scary while also abstractly haunting. The intrigue is there, and I love it.

1. Back to the Future

In some ways, this is THE movie poster. Iconic, exciting, and beautiful.

Sad to hear that. Lost my mom in recent years, in part due to dementia (not much different), so reading about anyone else’s progression is always troubling, especially when an enviable talent is lost along with everything else.

They made an excellent documentary about him in 2013. I have the DVD, but it’s been on YouTube for a while now, most likely illegally. Regardless it should be required viewing for movie fans of a certain vintage.

So many favourites, but these two are up there for me:

Rock fans might recall these (two of many LP covers he also did)

Sad to hear, some of my earliest childhood movie memories involved his posters, namely American Tail, Back to the Future and Masters of the Universe. Those are still among my favorites of his work. I've collected a number of books and prints over the years, I often wondered if he would do another round of signings...sadly we have our answer. You can still purchase a number of signed prints, but I'd expect what's left to go pretty fast.

I've collected quite a few of his prints over the years but I always wanted a signed print of that MOTU art.

End of an Era.

I always loved his work. Didn't he also do the theatrical poster for Hellboy? I also recall he did covers for the Dark Tower book series.

re: The Drew Struzan Appreciation Thread (1947-2025)

Framed reprints of his Back to the Future and Temple of Doom posters have been hanging over my bed for the last 18 years. Never get tired of looking at those designs. Being a huge Return to Oz fan, I also own original posters of these two. The second must have been a promotional giveaway, as it's only about half the size:

I always liked his artwork for Hocus Pocus since seeing it hanging at the movie theater as a kid. I had several opportunities to buy an original for under $20 a couple decades ago, but (with the movie's cult status) rolled posters usually sell for $150 and up these days. Oh, well. At least the Target digibook I own uses the same artwork, albeit with a modified purple background:

BTW, I hate the fact that Lucasfilm/Disney commissioned Struzan to do a poster design for The Force Awakens, but only used it as a D23 convention giveaway - opting for a photoshopped design for the theatrical poster instead. One of many boneheaded decisions made regarding the sequel trilogy. I was also annoyed when Warner Bros. abandoned his artwork after the first Harry Potter movie.

So many iconic images in his career. A bunch of years ago I was at Mondocon and he was in attendance. I picked up a print of the Creature From The Black Lagoon from his table while he was away and planned on going back to get it signed. Hours later after examining my wallet and the line at his table, I passed.

Admired his work... I have a reprint of the BTiLC signed by Carpenter. But he never did a print of my favorite movie.
There is another artist that does capture Struzan's art, Paul Shipper, and he did a print for JAWS that I have framed and hanging.

I don't know who did the artwork, but the illustrated poster for Disney's Jungle Cruise movie looked enough like classic Drew Struzan that he had to issue a denial on Twitter.

https://movieweb.com/drew-struzan-di...cruise-poster/

I didn't like that movie. Didn't even finish watching it, but I did get the poster (free from Disney Movie Insiders) because it emulated his art style.

It has to be one of the all time great posters for poor movies, it made it look like a badass Star Wars. As a young kid, looking at the racks of VHS tape covers to rent made such an impression on me... and so many of them were Drew's.

Iconic Movie Poster artist Drew Struzan dies at 78

If you have no idea who he is, you probably know his work. This man was a movie legend.

Oh no, that's horrible.

The man was an absolute legend. He produced so much iconic artwork that helped define so many great films that it's mind-boggling. You can't watch Star Wars or The Thing or Indiana Jones or Blade Runner without those incredible posters in the back of your mind.

I was always saddened that he didn't do the key art for all eight Harry Potter movies, only the first one. From what I heard, he was going to do all of the movies, but some asshole at Warners decided they wanted to use photoshop art on the posters and didn't use the one he completed for Chamber of Secrets.

I have the Drew Struzan Movie Posters coffee table book. Needless to say, but I loved his work. Various coffee table books come and go, but not Struzan, that one is a mainstay in my house. Highly recommended.

Saddened to hear quite some time ago that he had Alzheimer’s, so I knew that was that. Been there, done that, fuckin’ sucks. They made an excellent documentary about him in 2013. Full version:

There are a number of slipcover artists working today who are very clearly influenced by Struzan’s style. As good as the best of them are, they can’t touch him.

Hot take: Struzan is 100% the master everyone says he is, but Star Wars shouldn't be mentioned anywhere near the top of his byline. First of all, he didn't paint the original original posters, and second of all, the ones he did paint aren't that good. At least not compared to his best work (or other Star Wars posters).

This comes a couple weeks after Renato Casaro died at 89, who painted the movie posters for CONAN THE BARBARIAN, FLASH GORDON (1980), DUNE (1984), RAMBO III (1988) and Sergio Leone's "Man with No Name" trilogy, among many others.

Absolutely terrible news. I always adored his artwork and wished, if not by the man himself, that more movie posters were done in his style.

Didn't know he had an unreleased poster for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
