The Tom Selleck appreciation thread
I know Tom is really known mostly as a TV star. But, he's done a good amount of movies as well in career.
I think he's one of the most likable actors still working today. He just did 14 seasons of Blue Bloods on CBS and still looks pretty good for being 80 now.
I thought we could talk about both his film and TV career a little.
Some of my favorite Selleck works include:

An Innocent Man (1989)
I have the BD and rewatched it during Covid. Great song by Joe Cocker "When the Night Comes" from the soundtrack

Mr. Baseball (1992)
Fun fish out of water comedy. I remember seeing it for the 1st time in the theater back in high school

Runaway (1984)
Fun and goofy science fiction action movie. He had good chemistry with Cynthia Rhodes.

Lassiter (1984)
I watched this for the 1st time a few years ago on Max I think. Fun period spy caper movie with a young Jane Seymour and Lauren Hutton.
and Blue Bloods (2010-2025)

He played the Police Commissioner of a family of cops in NYC.

I was a little too young to fully appreciate it and only watched it sporadically in re-runs, but it would be sacrilege if I didn't also say Magnum PI
I do own the complete series on DVD and will eventually re-visit it.
He did a bunch of Jesse Stone PI thriller movies for CBS, but I didn't really like that character.

Watched Magnum as a kid and re-watching currently. It still holds up. His recent autobiography is a good read too. He worked hard on his career in the early days.
He was great, in In & Out, playing against type.

The 1979 western The Sacketts is probably the best thing he was in. FYI, he has a small part in Coma (1978) as a young, healthy guy going into surgery for something minor and routine, yet comes out in a Coma.

I remember really enjoying High Road To China as a kid. Haven’t seen in decades though. The what if of his nearly being cast as Indiana Jones is always fun to contemplate too. Would Indy have been quite as big a deal with Tom? Probably not but still interesting to consider.

I also watched Magnum P.I. growing up and re-watched it a couple of years ago. Agree that it holds up. I dressed up as Magnum for Halloween recently also.
Of his movies, I'm partial to Quigley Down Under.

My personal favourite film of his is QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER. Solid role for Alan Rickman as well, and one of Simon Wincer's best films.

I have both the Code Red and Vinegar Syndrome editions of TERMINAL ISLAND (both with unique supplements and both highly recommended if you can find a deal on them). I was going to mention it with QUIGLEY above, but figured it might be too obscure. Great to know it’s not!

Re: The Tom Selleck appreciation thread
When I was a kid, movies my parents taped off tv were some of my most seen movies as a child. As a result I’ve probably seen Three Men and a Little Lady 10-15 times. I’ve seen the original maybe once.
Same thing with Caddyshack and Caddyshack II. I’ve seen Caddyshack II 10-15 times and the original probably twice.
On topic though. Tom Sellecks recurring role as Richard on Friends is probably my favourite thing he’s done.

Quigley Down Under, An Innocent Man, Runaway, Three Men and a Baby/Little Lady, Her Alibi and Mr. Baseball were all solid to good movies. Quigley and An Innocent Man are my favorites and I imported the DVD for An Innocent Man from the US.
I was a little bit to young for Magnum, but I really enjoyed the Jesse Stone TV movies.

I really like Lassiter for some reason,
Terminal Island can be streamed for free on Vudu with ads I believe for those that would like to check it out.

I watched Terminal Island seem like JC "borrowed" some stuff from it for Escape From New York.
I saw it years ago on VHS but remembered none of it.
It was Ok for what it was but I would never watch it again. I know there are some "alternate" cuts/takes of Phyllis Davis that you can see and are worth checking out.

Does anyone remember Folks in the early 90s? It created a Felicity-cutting-her-hair type controversy among middle aged housewives because Selleck shaved his mustache for it.

Re: The Tom Selleck appreciation thread
A few months later he turned up in a supporting role / cameo CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS: THE DISCOVERY, which did even less for his big screen career. MR. BASEBALL came shortly after that, and while it was a better film, it also tanked so he was pretty much back to TV land for the most part.

Re: The Tom Selleck appreciation thread
I remember watching a lot of MAGNUM P.I. during its original run and what a bummer it was when the final episode ran. Selleck was so versatile in that role. He could easily switch from light-hearted comedic stuff with Higgins to serious gravitas stuff with Vietnam. I think he was one of the best at delivering voice over narration. The image I like to hold is of that sunny, smiling, shorts wearing, happier time, peeling out in a red Ferrari to a theme song that instantly got you jazzed for the show.
