The 2025 Goal Thread: Movies You Missed Potpourri Watch Party & Discussion
I had this idea for a thread where we could have an asynchronous "watch party" for a myriad of films. We all have gaps in our history, movies you missed for whatever reason (not into a particular genre, movies from before you were born, filmmaker you were never into, Oscar winners you missed out on, etc). I figured a thread where we could all share our viewing gaps and work towards watching some in the new year. It could also generate some light discussion for films that don't have threads worth bumping or at all.
Step 1#: Create your own PERSONAL list of movies you haven't seen before that you feel like you should have seen by now
Step 2#: Watch a movie off YOUR LIST at your leisure and post thoughts about it
=========
Rule #1: YOU MUST NOT HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE BEFORE (so that we're all coming into these movies fresh)
Rule #2: That's it. No other rules, just enjoy and have fun!
Other than that just pick some films or a theme you think you should have watched but haven't for whatever reason. One per month is my personal goal.
===================== MY PERSONAL LIST =====================
Gone with the Wind
Casablanca
Ben Hur
To Kill a Mockingbird
2001: A Space Odyssey
Planet of the Apes (1968)
Blade Runner
The Jerk
Blazing Saddles
Coming to America
Sixteen Candles
Dazed & Confused
Before Sunrise
Big Trouble in Little China
Do the Right Thing
Hot Fuzz
Step Brothers
Bonus Documentary: Shoah
Bonus Bonus: To kick things off before the New Year, two I'm gonna try and watch these two sometime this week:
It's a Wonderful Life
Planes, Trains & Automobiles

No takers? If not I'll let it die, but for now, it will be one and done..
I watched Planes, Trains & Automobiles the other night. I've heard it was a classic but being late to the party, it was just okay. My whole family watched for the first time. I think everyone walked away with similar feelings. There's zero plot whatsoever. Clearly just a studio putting two famous comedians together and having one annoy the other for 90 minutes. It had some decent moments but it was clearly a product of its time. I do think my favorite thing was John Candy's character being a shower curtain ring salesman.
Such an obscure product to make him a salesperson for that it worked.

The premise for this thread is nice, but the "Must not have seen the movie before" rule severely limits the number of posters who can participate. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who has seen every movie on the OP's list (except for SHOAH)..

May come up with a list of gaps here the only problem is a lot of the big ones that spring to mind (like Citizen Kane) are already on one of two (mostly different) posters of “100 movies you have to watch “which i have and am slowly working on completing with each of my kids.
Would definitely watch along to any films i hadn’t seen which aren’t on one of those posters. It’s a neat idea.

I’m down for discussing movies I’ve seen for the first time in 2025. My only problem is I don’t really have a list. I’ll try to keep an eye on this thread to discuss movies I’ve seen for the first time though.

I'm not understanding the premise . . .
If it is asynchronous, what is the time window to watch in? (Or are you using my moron of a former principal's definition of asynchronous, which was "ONLINE at the same time"?
Seriously, he thought "asynchronous" meant "online.")
Are we watching your movies or coming up with our own? There are only a couple on there that I haven't seen and have interest in. There are a few I haven't seen, but don't have any interest in.

Okay, sorry, maybe the concept got lost in my explanation. Simplified:
MAKE UP YOUR OWN PERSONAL LIST of movies you personally missed out on, not follow my list.
Come up with your own list.
Simply watch a movie that's on your list at your leisure and post about it. Then everyone's free to chime in and maybe generate some discussion of some older classics. Again, in my head (and by my personal list example) these are likely older films that you missed out on for whatever reason that likely don't have a thread or aren't worth bumping an old thread. It could also spur someone else to watch said movie.

I figured I’d add this here rather than the specific thread for it. It may still be on the newer side and might not fit here but it’s still a movie I missed out on it initially and am late to the party.
I received Godzilla Minus One for Christmas having yet to see it. I watched it with my son the other day and absolutely loved it! Such a great film. I’m not a huge fan of Godzilla movies but this was great!

Re: The 2025 Goal Thread: Movies You Missed Potpourri Watch Party & Discussion
So oddly enough, my college age teen is taking a film class and had to watch Casablanca this week which totally fits with my list, so we watched it tonight.
Surprise! It's a good movie. Something I learned today...I had no idea it was filmed during WW2. Setting a movie about an event while said event is still occurring probably doesn't happen too often, so that's kinda cool/unique. Bergman was great, as was the whole cast, but time for me to get raked over the coals. I was less impressed with Bogart, who's legend status probably affected it a bit. Rick was a bit too stoic and subdued. I get the character was supposed to be neutral, playing both sides, man without a home and "woe is me" about the one that got away, I just wasn't a fan. Too much of a downer. However, playing him that way did benefit the scenes where he was moderately more expressive, as the scenes felt more natural (any scene with Bergman, especially Paris).
Also odd is setting it in Morocco and having zero scenes in Morocco and limiting it to basically one setting for the bulk of the film. Of course that may be looking at it through a modern lens where movies like Mission: Impossible, the Bourne films and even the Fast & Furious series are zipping all around the globe.
