This expands this weekend.
I saw a screener last night. I don't think I loved it as much as the acclaim it is getting. The use of POV perspective is interesting, but I feel like that can take you out of the movie a bit. I also wasn't into the edit. It's not bad by any means, though.

I had not heard of this until I listened to several Top 10 list podcasts; it made multiple lists. Really want to see this one!

Saw this yesterday and thought it was good. The style is different; like a collection of memories. It took me a little while to get into the flow of it.
This will probably be the "best movie that no one sees" this year.

I just watched this yesterday. This movie was so terrible that it will likely get nominated for and win Best Picture at the Oscar Awards.

I really enjoyed this.
The camerawork, the story, the fascinating thematic montage of imagery and the time jumping. It all clicked for me, including the ending. I think it was 30 minutes too long, but otherwise it worked.

I liked how unique the POV photography was. There were a lot of angles I don't recall seeing in movies before. There were some shots it took me a few moments to orient myself and see exactly what I was looking at. The movie feels very much like a dream. It's also a film that demands your full attention, because nothing is conventionally explained, you're left on your own to figure things out, or accept there is a logic behind every detail you're seeing even though you're not privy to what that is (I'm thinking of stuff like the man walking away from his car with a suit hanging outside the back window. Is he leaving it there to be "stolen" as a way of making an anonymous donation?) I'm sure the filmmakers know the answers, but me not knowing everything doesn't dampen my engrossment in the movie anymore than all the things I see in my day-to-day life I don't know the full story of doesn't frustrate my day.

The movie didn't work for me at all. The pacing was really off and I think the unconventional storytelling was a disservice to the story itself. This movie is exemplary for a lot of movies in the last couple of years. Making an artistic choice that doesn't really serve the narrative, is a disservice to your movie. It still should be entertaining and I'm sure there are people who like Nickel Boys, Nomadland, The Zone of Interest or any Terrence Malick movie after The Thin Red Line, but I like my best picture nominees rewatchable and not only a gimmick for no good reason.
I'm not against using a gimmick. 1917, Boyhood or The Artist worked fine and all those movies have a certain rewatchabilty. Nickel Boys told a deeply sad and traumatic story, without making it compelling. It doesn't have to be as conventional as Sleepers, being a court drama, half of the time, but I didn't feel for the boys, although they went through hell and that was the result of a story told badly.

This is up on Amazon.
Worked for me big time. I haven't seen all of the nominees for best picture last year but think it's kind of bullshit that Anara won over this. I also enjoyed Wicked more than Anara but feel like that's more subjective. This was a very unique way to tell a story. It was haunting in parts. Looking forward to watching it again knowing more going into the second viewing.
