The Amateur (2025) D: Hawes S: Malek, Fishburne, Brosnahan

Charlie Heller (Malek) is a brilliant, but deeply introverted decoder for the CIA working out of a basement office at headquarters in Langley whose life is turned upside down when his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack. When his supervisors refuse to take action, he takes matters into his own hands, embarking on a dangerous trek across the globe to track down those responsible, his intelligence serving as the ultimate weapon for eluding his pursuers and achieving his revenge.

The film also stars Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Adrian Martinez, Danny Sapani, and Laurence Fishburne. “The Amateur” is directed by James Hawes. The screenplay is by Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli based on the novel by Robert Littell. The film is produced by Hutch Parker, p.g.a., Dan Wilson, p.g.a., Rami Malek, Joel B. Michaels, with JJ Hook serving as executive producer.

Looks interesting for a spy thriller. Malek is just some nerdy tech guy and he uses his skills in tech to find his wife’s killers.

I saw this trailer shown right after the trailer for The Accountant 2, and ... it's the same movie? Unassuming, socially awkward guy takes up violent revenge tour while working for the government after a loved one of his is murdered. And it features a dubious Jon Bernthal?

Early Access screenings start on Saturday. I have a ticket reserved at AMC. I'm excited for this one.

I want to see this one early but I'll wait and see it in Dolby.

Re: The Amateur (2025) D: Hawes S: Malek, Fishburne, Brosnahan

I saw the early screening last night. Overall, I liked it, but you have to suspend some disbelief. It's hard to believe some of the stuff Malek's character manages to pull off and get away with. There are no big twists or anything like that. It's a pretty straight forward thriller. Malek's wife gets killed by terrorists on a business trip and this CIA computer guy goes on a trip of vengeance. She isn't featured in any of the marketing, but Catriona Balfe from the Starz series Outlander has a pretty big part in the 2nd act as his "contact" in Europe. And sure, there are some spy thriller cliches we've seen before.

I appreciated that they didn't attempt to make Malek into some kind of badass action star. He never used a gun. He was a mild mannered computer nerd and used those skills he was good.at. Fishburne was good in a relatively small part. Jon Bernthal was completely wasted. His role was very insignificant.

If you enjoy Tech-driven spy thrillers, I think you'll enjoy this. It was fun seeing the "little guy" win.

Saw an Early Access Screening last weekend.

Even though the film is fairly linear with thinly painted characters, I still enjoyed the ride.

As Djariya mentioned, much of that has to do with Rami Malek's character not morphing into some unstoppable killing machine, as he makes mistakes often.

I didn't realize this was a remake of "The Amateur" (1981) a Canadian tax shelter film with John Savage and Christopher Plummer. Looks interesting!

On Dolby tonight. The pool scene was LOUD here and even though it's in the trailer it was still cool. Overall, we have Nerdy Jason Bourne doing some fun stuff and you gotta suspend some disbelief but it's a really fun ride. I really liked how Malek played this guy. I think word of mouth will work in it's favor.

As others have pointed out, you kind of just have to "go with it" as the ridiculousness/suspension of disbelief factor is pretty high on this one. I'm not the biggest Rami Malek fan (as an actor), but I thought his performance in this was really good. Great supporting cast as well.

Saw it in IMAX last night and it was fun. It was a more "cerebral" take on the Bourne films. I did like the globe-trotting aspect of it - they actually filmed it in several countries overseas.

I thought it was a dumb movie masquerading as a smart movie.

I really enjoyed this on a flight back from Italy... but I couldn't figure out what the purpose was of Jon Berenthal's character.

I liked this, felt like a solid throwback despite some obvious contrivances. Looked good too.

I thought it was fine. The pool scene was cool, and I was glad they didn't

lol I knew I had seen the Malek film was on Hulu, so I went there and clicked on the title in the featured section only to see that I was watching something really old with Christopher Plummer so I backed out and found the correct movie.

There is a lot of suspension of belief since this guy is not even close to being a field agent.

Nothing to add other than every time I considering watching this, I'm reminded that it's 2 1/2 hours and I can't imagine the plot holding my interest for that long. It doesn't drag at that length?

The version I watched on Hulu was right at two hours.

Dude, it's 122 minutes. It's not a slog to watch at all. There is action in it.

Huh, maybe I'm thinking of another film. Just checked Hulu and this one is listed at 2h2m.

Now I have to get home so I can try to figure out which I was actually thinking of that's 2 1/2.

This was decent. Good premise and performances. I did doze off a little while on the airplane and I didn't feel like I actually missed much, though.

Sold!

I saw the trailer in the theater and it looked pretty decent, I noticed it's on Disney+ (in Canada), maybe I'll give it a shot, even if I'm sleepy.
