How come people in movies have never seen other movies?
I was watching an episode of Elementary where Sherlock accuses a suspect of taking small amounts of poison to build immunity. The suspect responds, "You have been watching The Princess Bride too often". How refreshing. I realize there are copyright issues but no one in the future has heard of Star Wars? Maybe they go over my head but I often find myself thinking haven't you already seen yourself in this movie.

Scream is notable for popularizing meta-references to other horror films. Kind of ruined the genre if I'm being frank, too many newer horror films use it. Scream was clever but its descendants have now run the idea into the ground.

Because people in movies are busy complaining about the cost of tickets (and concessions) to watch real life.

It seems in every zombie movie, none of the characters have seen or know about zombie movies - as they're surprised at the behavior of zombies.
