Chappell Roan - Any fans here?
I didn't see a thread or even really any discussion about her here, so I decided to start one. I was introduced to Chappell Roan by my daughter in the last couple of months. My daughter generally doesn't like pop music, but she LOVES Chappell Roan. She assumed that I would like her too, based on the fact that I do like pop music and that she is openly a lesbian and very supportive of the LGBTQ community as as a whole. Her appearance is very drag inspired and she often has drag queens opening for her.
I just want to say that my daughter was SO RIGHT about her. I have recently become kind of obsessed.
Her album, "Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess" came out last September to little fanfare, but her star has risen meteorically since then. The album is SO GOOD, and her sound is infections. She toured with Olivia Rodrigo early this year, and had a solo tour this summer in venues that were much too small for her given how quickly her star has risen. Her crowd overwhelmed one of the back up stages at Coachella this year. Kamala Harris even used her song "Femininomenon" in a tik tok video for her campaign this week.
Just curious if we have fans here, since I know there is a contingent that loves female pop music here.
Here's some stuff if you don't know her.
Pink Pony Club appears on the album, and the video was actually posted 4 YEARS AGO and is only recently finding an audience, if you can believe it:

HOT TO GO:
My Kink is Karma:
NPR Tiny Desk Concert:
Her latest is "Good Luck, Babe!" which came out 3 months ago and will presumably be on an upcoming album, and is also amazing:

Is this the girl who broke down on stage about her rising fame a few weeks back?
I appreciated the honesty there.

BTW, if anyone decided to try this based on my suggestion and watched the first video and thought it was too gay, might I suggest trying my Kink is Karma? I probably should have put that first, it's way more approachable lol.

I saw her as the opening act for Declan McKenna about 4 years ago and she absolutely blew me away with her voice. I took my kids and some of their friends to see them in RI and she played this song as part of the set. I can only imagine what has happened to her professionally since then opening for so many big acts. I stopped following her social media stuff but have given her album a listen and she has a lot of talent.

Yeah, she posted a lot of covers in the years before she had refined her own sound and look. She's had an incredible voice, even before she had any professional training.

I hadn't heard of her until this thread and when my wife asked me to play Pink Pony Club on the TouchTujes jukebox at a restaurant tonight, I was able to say, oh, by Chappell Roan? My teen looked shocked.

I'm surprised nobody posted about her crowd at Lolla. As someone who has been to Lolla, this crowd is absolutely INSANE for a day time set.
https://www.cnn.com/2024/08/05/enter...oza/index.html
Two sources close to the singer and the festival told CNN that the crowd rivaled many headliners and is believed to be Lollapalooza’s biggest set of all time, anywhere in the world.

Am I the only one who feels like she’s on a trajectory to completely tank herself in record time? Saw she cancelled a bunch of shows because she got backlash for refusing to endorse Kamala or Trump. I can’t imagine wanting to support someone if I had spent money to go see a show and they bail for the most wish’s washy reasons.

Id still buy tickets to a Lauryn Hill show if it worked with my schedule and she cancels shows for a lot less than the pressure Roan may be currently feeling.
Does stink for those who bought festival tickets based heavily - only on her being there though. Would be nice if they could get a refund but i doubt that’s how festival tickets work. Never been to one myself.

The lesson is that festival tickets are for the festival, not the individual artists, as all acts and times are fluid.
As far as the politics go, I can't imagine that there are very many people who would care who Roan was voting for, that were not already supporters of whoever was running against Trump. When Taylor Swift makes her endorsement, people give her shit. When Roan (initially) declines to make an endorsement, people give her shit.

I gave her a listen the other day based on some mention of her name somewhere, possibly this thread, and liked her.

My daughter has tickets for the show today and is pissed. They're replacing her with a drag lip syncing show -- that isn't a fair replacement for a headliner. At least she gets to see Soccer Mommy, who is an artist both she and I like.

This. The Seaside festival in CT replaced the Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age with Jack White, Greta Van Fleet and Bleachers. They fit the vibe but not the same.

I thought Chappell was a shoo-in for the Best New Artist Grammy, but in their infinite wisdom, the Recording Academy has decided to allow superstar Sabrina Carpenter to compete for Best New Artist, for this, her sixth album. While I really like Short & Sweet, I really hope Chappell wins because she is really a New Artist.

She was a big hit at the Austin City Limits Festival this past weekend. Here's a video of her entire hour-long set.

Roan played the second weekend of the festival, as well. Estimated crowd size: 75K
