Twisters (2024, D: Chung) -- The Spoilers Reviews Thread

From the producers of the Jurassic, Bourne and Indiana Jones series comes Twisters, a current-day chapter of the 1996 blockbuster, Twister. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, the Oscar® nominated writer-director of Minari, Twisters stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing), Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) and Anthony Ramos (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) as equal forces, with opposing motivations, who come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.

Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Carter, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better.

As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler, Javi and their crews find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.

Rated: PG-13

Running Time: 122 Minutes

RT Score: 77% certified fresh

Opens tonight. There was an Early screening last night in IMAX with a cast Q&A. I'm assuming most here didn't go.

I was planning to see it tonight, but had to cancel my ticket. Recovering from a nasty cold that's kicked my ass for the last week. I'm going to try for Friday or Saturday

I wanted to go last night but decided I'll go next Tuesday on my closest theater's discount night.

Wow...what a huge disappointment this was. While a couple of scenes were decent (the rodeo sequence is the best in the film), the screenplay is soooo predictable and completely "flat." I honestly wouldn't be surprised to find out it was written with AI - that's how bad it is. Not only aren't there any surprises in TWISTERS, but most of us familiar with movies will be able to predict what's going to happen in almost every scene. You will likely guess exactly what is going to happen to whom in the movie's first sequence, and you'll probably also guess the amount of time that passes from that scene until the next (I guessed exactly right). The same is true of at least a half dozen other sequences in the film.

There's literally no joke that lands in the film, except one...and it was probably unintended: a certain actor yelling "I don't care about the people!" When you know the actor, you'll get why it's funny.

Sure the FX are better than the original TWISTER, but not one minute is better - and that film wasn't exactly perfect. Two out of Five Stars for me, or a C-

I was entertained throughout but this movie is so weird in that it's a sequel/follow-up/reimagining/shared universe that hardly acknowledges the previous movie (cameo by Dorothy, a particular outfit in '24 is the same as a character from '96). I feel that the '96 movie is better overall. Glen and Daisy are good though.

Feeling well enough to go see this tomorrow night. I splurged and bought a $24 seat for 4DX. Oh that's going to be wild with the wind, sprinkles and motion chairs.

I don't know the actor so even that joke didn't land for me. That was my primary issue with this film: it wasn't fun.

So... as someone that really dislikes a large majority of the soundtrack, how prominent was it in the movie?

Very prominent, almost every scene has a country music song.

How and why the fuck is Tunde Adebimpe from TV on the Radio acting in this movie??
Why is Paul Scheer a random airport traffic officer?

Great cast... but agree... there's no "fun" or absurdness that the original had. I wouldn't call it a bad movie... just a pretty by the numbers disaster pic.

I left the film wondering if the rich development guy had a bigger role that was cut from the final film. They make a big deal about him, but he has very little screen time.

Girlfriend liked it a lot. I was incredibly bored and did not care for it at all. I wasn’t even that impressed with a lot of the twister. It just was not impressive to me at all.

Re: Twisters (2024, D: Chung) -- The Spoilers Reviews Thread

I saw it last night in 4DX with a pretty good sized crowd. It's a pretty expensive ticket. The theater I went to charged $24. Anyway, the movie was okay for me. But, I had fun with the 4DX experience. The winds, moving and revolving chairs. It was a pretty intense experience. I know this type of premium experience is not for everyone. After one intense storm sequence in the movie with the chairs and winds in the theater going crazy (If you get motion sickness, it's definitely not for you), the theater went "Oh shit!!" and then erupted in laughter.

I thought Daisy Edgar-Jones was kind of a dull heroine with not much personality, but she did get a little better in the later acts. Loved Glen Powell. The dude is very likeable and charming. He's going to be a star for years to come.

There isn't much substance to this. It's a movie about tornadoes. But, the special effects were pretty good and as I said, there were some intense sequences (definitely enhanced by 4DX) and Powell was the main draw for me and he was pretty good. I did think the ending kind of fell flat. I was like "That's how they're ending it?"

I know a few have already mentioned they didn't care for this, but I thought it was a fun communal experience last night for got my $$$$ worth. Probably won't see it again until it hits Max later this year.

B and 3 1/2 stars,

TWISTER (1996) stood out for me because it had a great eating scene where Helen Hunt's aunt (played by Lois Smith) serves everyone a heaping breakfast of steak and eggs and they all eat and then nap before continuing their tornado-chasing adventures. We hardly ever see that in an action movie--where characters actually stop to fuel themselves and rest. I bet there's no food scene like that in this new one.

It's funny because that food scene is one of the most memorable sequences in that movie. It was a funny, good character moment and gave weight to the situation that follows

Re: Twisters (2024, D: Chung) -- The Spoilers Reviews Thread

Caught this yesterday at an 11:45 AM showing. Others at later times were selling out and today apparently had some matinees sell out. First time I've seen this happen in a while. I enjoyed the movie overall so glad it's doing well. I have to say the FX sequences were probably better in the first one, but this one had better character interaction. In fact, that's where I feel the excelled. Powell seems to have great chemistry with any leading lady with whom he shares the screen, and he and Jones were a great couple. The story was good for what it was, but a little bit predictable. Also, while this had a great country music soundtrack, the fact that they felt the need to play it so often sometimes gave off the vibe I was watching a series of music videos . But then again. that's part of the old school charm of this movie.

Sidenote: I saw in the credits that Joseph Kosinski did the story outline. Given this along with Top Gun: Maverick and Tron:Legacy (which I dug), I think this guy needs to be given a Star Wars movie. Provided of course Kathleen Kennedy gets little to no input.

I’ll take the minority opinion here. I had a lot of fun. Thought it looked good and I liked the leads. Yes there was a lot that was pretty stupid (none more so than how they kept …. Showing the 1931 movie Frankenstein as a tornado barrels down on the town. Even if the power were miraculously still on, don’t you think maybe it’s time to turn the projector off?). Still I was pretty entertained. Did not like the soundtrack at all — way too much country.

For nostalgia reasons :

I was pretty confused about the ‘evil billionaire’s’ motivation. He hires a team of top notch researchers who use cutting edge sonars to 3D scan tornados to….then buy tornado-destroyed property? That seems like a huge waste of resources. What good is knowing more about the predictability of tornados if your endgame is just to buy up land after they’ve been hit? Am I missing something?

Also a huge missed opportunity here, as they should have cast as the evil billionaire’s wife real-life evil billionaire’s wife Jamie Gertz in a returning role!

Right, and like everyone says Twister has amazing effects for 1976.
