DEANER ‘89 (Canada; 2024; D: McGlynn) aka FUBAR III
This will probably only resonate with the small (and presumably Canadian?) crowd who’ve seen Michael Dowse’s first two FUBAR movies (2002, 2010) and/or the three scarce FUBAR tv/web series (which might make this part VI, technically). Dowse went on to bigger (though not necessarily better) things like GOON, STUBER, and 8-BIT CHRISTMAS) and is absent here, so this seems to be the baby of FUBAR leading man, writer, and producer Paul Spence, minus costar David Lawrence, who merged his Terry character into later TRAILER PARK BOYS series (which, yes, they’re still making up here
). Looks like it could be on par with the first two, but it’s been a while, so I’ll approach with level expectations, especially considering new director Sam McGlynn has only done shorts and video games. I’m curious if it will play at TIFF like the second film. “Give’r!”
First two trailers, for those unacquainted, or un-Canadian

This film is not part of the Fubar franchise.
"Update: Deaner ‘89 is technically not part of the FUBAR franchise. In 2019, Paul Spence sold his shares of the FUBAR IP to Dave Lawrence. Lawrence retained the rights to FUBAR and is continuing the series through TNT FUBAR. Deaner ‘89 is a new continuity unrelated to FUBAR. The article has been updated to reflect this."

Well, that’s an interesting first post from an interestingly-named new member!
I dug around a bit before posting my original comment and I suspected something might be amiss considering the lack of explicit references, but the character is so iconic (both of them are) from the FUBAR movies that one can’t help but feel a spiritual connection alongside the fact that, on the surface, he seems to be playing the same (and same-named) character with the same catchphrase.
By the way, I believe this is the article Just Giver was referring to. I suspect the separation of these two properties is going to be an ongoing discussion in the media coverage now:

Guess there’s more to the story than we know yet. Mods, feel free to remove the ‘Fubar III’ reference in the thread title.

I’d change The thread title to say “definitely not FUBAR III” since that keeps it true but also acknowledges that Deaner is, for all intents and purposes, the same character.
