The Exorcism (2024, D: Miller) S: Crowe, Worthington, Bailey, Goldberg, Pierce

Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe stars as Anthony Miller, a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. His estranged daughter, Lee (Ryan Simpkins), wonders if he's slipping back into his past addictions or if there's something more sinister at play. The film also stars Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg and David Hyde Pierce.

Starring: Russell Crowe, Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg, and David Hyde Pierce
Directed by: Joshua John Miller
Release Date: June 21st, 2024
No connection to The Pope's Exorcist. This was actually shot BEFORE that back in 2019. The studio thought it sucked, commissioned reshoots, but they never happened due to COVID until last year... and fueled by the popularity of The Pope's Exorcist.

Wow, I saw an ad for this and just assumed it was a sequel.

I’m surprised that this is actually getting a theatrical run by Vertical. Most of their movies are DTV and have no marketing budget. This will likely make very little money to no money. His last movie Sleeping Dogs, also from Vertical, went DTV, but had a limited international theater run.

They acquired it for cheap from Miramax only a few weeks ago. It seems they are banking solely on people thinking it is related to the other movie. They even changed the name from The Georgetown Project.

Remember when Sam Worthington was the "next" big thing???

Slumming it like others now.

Hmmm, that's interesting to know. I thought the movie has a some very effective things going for it, but it is so elliptical, with a lot of scenes just cutting off before they feel over, and in the next scene there's a lot details that have been left out. I thought this was perhaps a (ill-conceived) stylistic choice. Now I'm wondering if they shot new "scary scenes" that don't fit with the rest of the movie.

Like there's a scene where Russell Crowe
Spoiler:
smashes his face repeatedly into the sharp edge of a table, the soundtrack filled with the sound of smashing teeth and broken bones, and then in the next scene he's completely fine, no injuries.

The tone of the scene is so different, I kept waiting for the reveal it's a dream, but apparently not.

Most bizarre is
Spoiler:
I can't tell if Russell Crowe's character died or not during the end of the second act. Seems impossible for him to have survived, but the movie neither shows you his body or gives an indication that something supernatural happens. It just cuts to the next scene where no one says outright what's happened. Are they standing on the street where his body is, or has he disappeared? When he comes back, I'm wondering if this is supposed to be a spiritual manifestation of him, but the movie plays out like it really is him in living flesh and blood.

.

Holy smokes, I was enjoying it until the avalanche of story holes wiped out my goodwill.

I just saw this. It is probably the worst movie I've seen in a while; at least this year. I actually liked Fool's Paradise better than this and I thought that movie was terrible.

The first half of the movie isn't too bad; the set up had potential, but none of it paid off. Instead it was like trying to watch an hour of sweaty Russel Crowe and Frasier's brother screaming while someone flashes a strobe light in your face.

Hey, as long as they're making Avatar movies, Sam's got a gig.

yeah i saw it for free with my Regal UL; i regretted not taking a nap during it. Might be worth seeing just to see if you think it is as bad as everyone is saying, lol.

Unless you can see Ghostlight instead. It would be a shame to pass that one up.

There's quite a few films releasing this week. I'll probably prioritize those before this one

I noticed that even though it's only been out for a few days, the local Regal Theater has it down to a single screening after this Thursday.

Now on Hulu

I bet the Pacino exorcism movie the Ritual might be better.

At first I thought this was a prequel to the Pope's Exorcist.

I turned this off during the opening scene - Really bad.
