John Wick spinoff starring Donnie Yen
Donnie Yen has inked a deal to reprise his role as Caine, the highly skilled, blind assassin introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4, in a new film from Lionsgate set to shoot in Hong Kong next year, the studio announced on Wednesday.
While the logline is being kept under wraps, the new film will continue Yen’s story arc following the events of Chapter 4, as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table.
The new film was developed as part of Chad Stahelski’s recently announced deal with Lionsgate to oversee the expansion of the John Wick universe and will be shepherded by franchise producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee (John Wick: Chapters 1 through 4) for Thunder Road and Stahelski (John Wick: Chapters 3 & 4, Ballerina) through his 87Eleven Entertainment banner.
Script is written by Robert Askins, the Tony-nominated writer of the play Hand to God, who has also worked on such series as The Umbrella Academy and The Son. Lionsgate’s Caine film is just the latest extension of a billion-dollar action franchise, which last fall rolled out the Peacock miniseries The Continental: From the World of John Wick. Up next for release, on June 6, 2025, is Ballerina, a female-driven spin-off which stars Ana de Armas as an assassin trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma.
“From the moment Donnie Yen appeared on screen in John Wick: Chapter 4, he captivated audiences and created an authentic, emotional connection that left an inedible mark and had fans asking for more,” said Adam Fogelson, chair, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “The John Wick universe that Chad, Basil, Erica, and Keanu have built offers a tapestry of fascinating characters brought to life by the most extraordinary performers, and we’re excited to have one of the world’s biggest superstars on board to continue this journey.”
Calling his experience with John Wick: Chapter 4 “extraordinary,” Yen said that “the reason these films resonate so deeply is because, like myself, Chad, Basil, and Erica push themselves to create action, fights, and stunts that are not only thrilling, inventive and artistic, but also expressive of character, story, and emotion. Caine is an incredible character with a haunted past, and I am excited to return to the role.”
An internationally recognized actor and martial artist, Yen has also been seen in such recent films as Mulan, Ip Man 4: The Finale, xXx: Return of Xander Cage and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, among others. He is represented by Independent Artist Group, as well as Peco Ng at Bullet Films.
Askins is repped by WME and Grandview.

I'd kinda like a prequel with him while he still looks pretty good. How he came to be in with the High Table and his past relationship with Wick, before people start to come after his daughter to get to him.

The John Wick universe is way too elaborate. There are assassins everywhere! I want a spin-off where the protagonist is a "regular" person who learns that everyone around him is either an assassin or someone involved in that shadowy world. Family, friends, coworkers, 7/11 cashiers, etc. And he's absolutely horrified at all the terrible violence happening around him. This would probably need to be a comedy.

Man, even when it’s to a franchise I like (don’t like this one much) I’m so sick of everyone and their dog getting a spin off. It’s so tiresome.

Re: John Wick spinoff starring Donnie Yen
Donnie Yen, fresh off his critically acclaimed performance as the blind assassin Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4, has confirmed that he may be doing more than just starring in a spin-off based on the character. In an exclusive interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub while promoting his latest movie, The Prosecutor, Yen revealed that not only is he set to reprise his role, but there’s a strong possibility he may direct the project himself. Adding fuel to the fire, Weintraub shared that John Wick director Chad Stahelski himself mentioned Yen’s potential involvement behind the camera. Yen, while flattered, also expressed the weight of responsibility such an opportunity would bring. “It is true,” he confirmed.

“I think both the fans, as well as the studio, want this to happen, and we'll see. I don't know, Steve. I can only tell you that much. But yes, we are talking, and we are talking intimately. We'll see what happens.”
“But at the same time, I hold responsibility as well as a pressure that I don't want to ruin the franchise," he added. "I try to do my best to bring something fresh to the franchise itself. I don't want to bring down the expectations for the fans. I try to do my best, like always."
While Yen’s directing credits may not be as well known as the stunning achievements he's made on-screen, he is certainly no amateur when it comes to working behind the camera, having directed action in films since 1988's Tiger Cage, and making his feature film debut in 1997's Legend of the Wolf. Speaking about his latest directorial effort, The Prosecutor, Yen reflected on how the project served as a platform to showcase his skills.

The film is a thriller set in Hong Kong, and inspired by, an actual legal case, focusing on Fok Chi-ho, a former police detective turned public prosecutor, who becomes convinced of a young man's innocence in a drug trafficking case. Although the defendant admits his guilt, Fok makes the bold choice of risking his career and life to uncover the truth and bring the real perpetrators to justice. Yen told Collider:
“I do feel that The Prosecutor is giving me a fair chance of showing what type of director I am and the potential of me being a director because although in comparison to the Hollywood standard, it's not a huge budget — we shot it for under $25 million US — it's still a lot more than my first movie when I shot for half a million. And I dedicated myself. I didn't do anything else. I spent a whole year doing this movie. So, to be fair, I think this really represents what kind of director I am.”
Yen was quick to clarify that any involvement in a John Wick spin-off would be approached with the same meticulous care and passion. “I have to flesh it out. I have a couple of ideas in my mind of how I would like the story to go. But we'll see. I don't want to give away too much because I don't know if I'm in that position to give that away. But they've been very persistent, and they've been very passionate about me taking on this project.”
Weintraub pointed out that "many" in the action community would want to work with such a legendary figure on a movie like this, to which Yen responded enthusiastically, adding that he fully hoped and expected Stahelski to be on hand for help and guidance. He said:
"He better be there! I want to make sure it's going to be a lot of fun. My attempt is to try to make something that won't disappoint the fans and the general audience.”
The Prosecutor will be released on January 10, 2025, in limited theaters. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates on Donnie Yen's John Wick spin-off, and look for our full conversation with Yen soon.

Lionsgate also greenlit the Caine spinoff. Yen is directing

In a standalone feature, Yen, the influential martial arts legend, will reprise his role as the blind assassin Caine from “John Wick: Chapter 4.” Yen will also direct and executive produce the untitled film, which begins production in Hong Kong later this year.
Mattson Tomlin, writer of the upcoming “The Batman Part II” and adaptation of the Reeves-created comic book “BRZRKR,” has joined to write the project. A previous draft of the screenplay was written by Robert Askins. Iwanyk, Lee and Stahelski will also produce this spinoff.Though the logline is being kept under wraps, the film will continue Yen’s story arc following the events of “John Wick: Chapter 4” as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table. Lionsgate described the new film as “stylistically modeled on the uniquely designed action films that Yen helped make famous.” Yen, known the Hong Kong star known for such blockbusters as “Star Wars: Rogue One” and “xXx: Return of Xander Cage,” has helped introduce mixed martial arts to mainstream cinema with films like “Flashpoint” and the “IP Man” franchise.
“From the moment Chad and Donnie pitched the idea of a Donnie Yen-style action film in the mode of John Wick, I was all in,” Fogelson said. “Donnie is not only an incredible, charismatic star, but a smart, cinematic director who knows how to deliver massively entertaining action for a global audience. We’re thrilled that he’s in the director’s chair to tell Caine’s story.”
Yen added, “The ‘John Wick’ films have set an immensely high standard for action filmmaking and I greatly appreciate Lionsgate giving me the opportunity to further elevate the franchise. I am both thrilled and deeply inspired to make this happen.”
Stahelski described the film as a “modern day kung-fu classic that explores the John Wick world.”
“One of my favorite characters in the John Wick world is Caine. To have the chance to dive into his world and discover all his adventures excites us all,” Stahelski said. “And who better to helm it than Donnie Yen himself. His understanding of the culture, the world, and, of course, the action, make him the perfect director for this project.”

I know they won't do it because many Americans don't like reading subtitles, but it would be cool if they made the entire movie in Cantonese. Make it a truly gritty Hong Kong style action thriller.

With Yen directing, it'd be cool if he did exactly that. I wonder if this project is why he finally gave up on Sleeping Dogs.

Re: John Wick spinoff starring Donnie Yen
I kinda wondered if THE PROSECUTOR wasn’t basically a demo reel. At that point he hadn’t full-on directed a film in 20 years, and that previous venture PROTEGE DE LA ROSE NOIR was an odd thing co-directed by then relative newcomer Barbara Wong (a specialist in lightweight fare both before and after). Yen’s action design was the drawing card, and the film seemed like a launching pad for his sister that didn’t really pan out. You have to go back six years earlier than that to find Yen’s best directorial efforts, which were his first three: LEGEND OF THE WOLF (mentioned in some articles posted a while back), BALLISTIC KISS, and SHANGHAI AFFAIRS. For the era, and their indie budgets, they’re pretty solid comic book-ish adventures, but I’d wager if anyone was going to give Yen the reins on a Hollywood movie all these decades later, he needed to prove he still had skills that worked the modern era beyond just top-shelf action design, ergo THE PROSECUTOR.
I’m not entirely convinced this movie was a factor in Yen dumping SLEEPING DOGS, though. As discussed earlier, he’s just too old now and it’s starting to show a bit (probably more than on the similar-aged Reeves)

Prior to The Prosecutor, Yen directed Sakra. Really well done, even if it felt a tad bloated for its runtime. But The Prosecutor is definitely the template I expect for this.
As for Sleeping Dogs, unless he was to be in a prominent supporting role, he had aged out before he even announced the project. So his suddenly dropping out years later feels weird.

Wong Jing was famous – or perhaps infamous? – back in the 80’s and probably beyond for letting underlings and lesser ‘names’ direct significant portions of ‘his’ films while he still claimed a ‘directed by’ credit, or sometimes ‘executive director’ or something like that. Given Kam’s generally undistinguished output as a credited main director, and the relatively superior quality of BIG BROTHER and also 2017’s COLOUR OF THE GAME (the third in a loose trilogy of “Wong Jing films”, the other two openly co-directed by Marco Mak and Billy Chung but with Wong being the big name), it’s reasonable to assume Kam Ka-Wai is probably, similarly, a journeyman director who could keep a sizeable production running by handling a lot of dialogue scenes, establishing shots, inserts, maybe some post, etc. under the supervision of Yen so the latter could focus on his patented action sequences and other effects and generally test the waters after 20 years, while allowing Wong could do whatever it is Wong does on so many of his productions (Keep everything on schedule? Hand out paychecks? Play the horses?).

If you look at the credit blocks on Wellgo’s U.S. video sleeves for SAKRA, it says ‘Directed By Donnie Yen’ in the biggest letters right up top, and Kam is kinda buried in with everyone else. The credit block on the German Blu-ray, by comparison, says ‘A Film By Donnie Yen’, similarly largest and at the top (Kam is still buried with everyone else). It’s a subtle distinction, but one that reminds me of so many movies purporting to be “A Film by Wong Jing” that were at least partly directed by others in his employment.
To further confuse the matter, the credit block on the Spanish Blu-ray sleeve lists Yen, Kam, and HK b-movie veteran Steve Cheng Wai-man as co-directors! Not even sure where to begin with that one!
HKMDB shows his career drying up around 2006, but IMDb shows it picking up in various mainland China television series circa 2012 and continuing through 2024 (so far). All fanciful period shows, no less, which would certainly put him in proximity to Yen and Wong if they needed an extra hand on SAKRA.So there are enough fingers in the SAKRA pie to suggest a) that it’s not a full Donnie Yen-directed film (same as ROSE NOIRE in that sense) even though he undoubtedly oversaw the whole thing, and b) that, indeed, PROSECUTOR was the movie he needed to make to prove he could handle this CAINE spinoff. However . . . that can be taken with a grain of salt because, true to Hong Kong tradition, PROSECUTOR listed two ‘executive directors’ in the credits: Mak Ho-Pong, director of his own successful BREAKOUT BROTHERS trilogy and other films, and Terry Ng, another assistant director who moved up to directing his own pictures, though with less success so far.
So basically, who knows who’ll actually be behind the camera when Donnie’s in front of it during the making of CAINE! Kind of a Hong Kong tradition, I suppose.

And while I agree that the announcement that he wouldn’t be doing SLEEPING DOGS was fairly recent, I guess I can’t shake the feeling that he probably came to the conclusion long before that. That ship sailed a long time ago, but maybe he just held on to the property or something?
