Didi (2024, D: Wang) S: Izaac Wang, Joan Chen
For anyone who’s ever been a teenager. Watch the trailer for Dědi (弟弟), a film by Sean Wang. Winner of the Special Jury and Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival. Only in theaters July 26.
Dědi (弟弟) is written and directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Sean Wang. The film is set in 2008 in the Bay Area, and is a funny, irreverent, and affecting ode to first-generation teenagers navigating the joy and chaos of adolescence as seen through the lens of a 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy, played by Izaac Wang (Good Boys, Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon). At its premiere in competition at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival it received critical and audience acclaim, winning both the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award and the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Best Ensemble Cast.

An understanding, Taiwanese non-tiger mom? I call shenanigans.
Looks decent, will give it a shot.

This is starting to expand to more theatres this week. I believe the wide release is the 16th.

This has been playing on one of the TIFF screens here for a little while now. Interesting to see it get a wider release. I think I’ve lost count of the Asian-American-made coming-of-age movies that deal with ‘mom/grandma/etc. relationships’ (SAVING FACE, MINDING THE GAP, TURNING RED, THE FAREWELL, EEAAO, EVE & THE FIREHORSE, THE MOTEL, DOUBLE HAPPINESS, even UMMA and MINARI to a degree) and yet, while acknowledging that the ‘battling elders and/or cultural expectations’ trope turns up in films of many cultural stripes – I like that the Asian takes usually find the most interesting and compelling ‘ins’ to a potentially overused movie relationship dynamic. It really seems like DIDI might, too, based on the trailer. I’m curious how similar or different Joan Chen’s character will be to the mom she played in SAVING FACE, and if that role was a factor in her casting.
Incidentally, Sean Wang’s short film was mentioned in the first post, but it really feels like the roots of DĚDI can be found in his earlier short film H.A.G.S. (warning: contains 20-somethings navel-gazing about ‘adulthood’
) and, maybe to a lesser degree outside of his relationship with his mom, 3000 MILES:

Well, I saw this today, and enjoyed it. If you like coming-of-age films, and especially with an American-born Taiwanese bent, then this is a good one. It's also a nice reminder that not every one has to end in a tragedy or a triumph. Sometimes they're just a collage of life, and all the changes and challenges that are happening so fast at that age.
Seeing 2008-era Facebook and MySpace and YouTube and AIM recreated was a trip. It's amazing that it was more discombobulating than watching a period piece from the 70's.
Wow, watching that now, it's clear that this film was completely informed by his experiences in 2008 as a rising 9th grader.
