Speak No Evil (2024, D: Watkins) -- S: James McAvoy, MacKenzie Davis -- From Blumhouse
When an American family is invited to spend the weekend at the idyllic country estate of a charming British family they befriended on vacation, what begins as a dream holiday soon warps into a snarled psychological nightmare.
From Blumhouse, the producer of The Black Phone, Get Out and The Invisible Man, comes an intense suspense thriller for our modern age, starring BAFTA award-winner James McAvoy (Split, Glass) in a riveting performance as the charismatic, alpha-male estate owner whose untrammeled hospitality masks an unspeakable darkness. Speak No Evil stars Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate, Halt and Catch Fire) and SAG award-winner Scoot McNairy (Argo, A Quiet Place Part II) as American couple Louise and Ben Dalton, who, along with their 11-year-old daughter Agnes (Alix West Lefler; The Good Nurse, Riverdale), accept the weekend-holiday invitation of Paddy (McAvoy), his wife Ciara (Aisling Franciosi; Game of Thrones, The Fall) and their furtive, mute son Ant (newcomer Daniel Hough).
Written for the screen and directed by James Watkins, the writer-director of Eden Lake and the award-winning gothic ghost story The Woman in Black,
Speak No Evil is based on the screenplay of the 2022 Danish horror sensation Gæsterne, written by Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup. That film earned 11 Danish Film Awards nominations, the Danish equivalent of the Oscars. Speak No Evil is produced by Jason Blum (Five Nights at Freddy’s, M3GAN) for Blumhouse and by Paul Ritchie (McMafia, The Ipcress File) and is executive produced by Beatriz Sequeira for Blumhouse, Jacob Jarek and Christian Tafdrup.
Comes to theaters September 13th.

I didn't care for the original. This does not look like a good remake either. I do like McAvoy however but doubtful I will see it.

I mean, this is probably worth a watch for McAvoy alone.

I didn’t mind the original. Certainly nothing I needed to own, but a decent freebie from the library, and I’d be curious to see if the American version has the balls to keep the original ending. Somehow I doubt it, but I’ll find out when it becomes another freebie from the library.

I thought this looked pretty bad based on the trailer personally.

Early buzz on this is that objectively this movie is, well, bad. But, McAvoy gives such a power house performance you can be somewhat forgiving of its short comings. It apparently leans heavily into the realm of stupid protagonists doing stupid things.

Yes as it was in the original. I was flabbergasted by some of the stupidity in it.

Yep. I get it was supposed to be a satire of sorts but it's really hard to take seriously when people act so catastrophically stupid.

This was meh. James really chews it up, like a version of The Beast in Split. Never saw the original so can't compare but you got most of the movie in the trailer.

The trailer for this has been stalking me at the cinema for over a month. It looks really bad. Blumhouse is such a shit production company. A24 and NEON are 2 companies that have built enough credit with me that I will see movies that look only so-so like that Brandy Horror flick A24 put out. Whereas seeing the Blumhouse logo before a trailer usually puts a bad taste in my mouth.

I read this also has the "Hollywood" ending unlike the original.

I saw this yesterday. I finally got to see the parts of the trailer in the full movie!
I had seen the original and I was expecting it to be bad but I thought it was okay. The acting was good and it held my interest.
I kind of went in wanting to hate it but it was okay.

Caught this today mostly due to the positive reviews on rottentomatoes, and it wasn't as bad as I thought it might prove and since I was using a moviepass type program for the chain in my area, it didn't cost me anything extra. McAvoy was definitely the MVP and did a great job. Don't know what kind of workout regimen he does, but he manages to be built like brick house without looking too muscular that steroids are suspected. In terms of the movie itself, I found it quite suspenseful and entertaining, but at times the American family, especially McNary's dad character, came across as so freaking stupid that I felt like helping the bad guys to end their annoying presence. That's a shame because I've seen McNary in other stuff and he's quite good. He didn't deserve to be saddled with such a poorly written character. Davis is okay, but I've never found her characters as particularly likeable either. In terms of the ending
I don't think this lends itself very well to a sequel, but with a few story tweaks, they could easily take elements of the original use it as a prequel. I wouldn't mind seeing more of a backstory to the antagonists, as it seems pretty rich.

Went against my instincts and caught a late screening of this last night.
Having an Regal Unlimited Plus Pass makes you do silly things
I was barely on-board for Director Christian Tafdrup's 2022 film (which Director James Watkins' film is a remake of) and many of my feelings are replicated here.
While the James Watkin's (Eden Lake) direction is solid and James McAvoy's performance fantastic, the film is still chock full of un-likeable characters in hilariously stupid situations.
Quite honestly, this was probably the only thing I vaguely enjoyed about the original film.

The trailers for this film pretty much spoiled any chance of people not figuring out what was happening on their own. I think I may have enjoyed it more if I hadn't seen them, but it's been pretty much impossible to attend a movie over the past two months and not see them. Hell, the only real reason I was glad this movie finally got released was because it meant I could finally stop seeing the trailer play before other movies.

I guess I was the only one who really loved this. Swinging from intense relationship drama to awkward guys' trip was a pretty fun ride and I loved how it tackles that bullshit Alpha Male nonsense and how that can be alluring for some people who should know better.
I completely disagree anyone acted stupidly: they're some white collar city dwellers who are just generally off-put by MacAvoy & co. Only we understand they're in a horror movie. They just think they're dealing with some uncouth folk. Once they actually do realize the danger, they make their best efforts to save themselves and the boy

I've been keeping track of the trailers that play before each movie, and according to my database, I've been seeing the Speak No Evil ads since going to Abigail in April.
