Golden Globes (Show Discussion) - Jan 7, 2024
Jo Koy going over like a lead weight has been quality cringe. What a poorly produced program
That said, Bill Hader and Ali Wong are together? Neat.

Ironically The Bear won Golden Globes for Season 2 before the Emmys for their first season have even been handed out.

Jo Koy will never get hired to host another awards show ever again
Even Deidre Hall, one of the queens of Daytime TV, posted on Facebook he was an absolute embarrassment.

I watched the first seven of his ten minute opener. Honestly, he seemed par for the course for this sort of thing, but I bailed after he made a big reaction to the audience's lack of explosive laughter one time too many. A joke would get mild laughs, and he'd defensively exclaim, "That was hilarious!" I don't know if he's insecure, or trying to pretend he's doing super controversial jokes, but it did not endear him to me.

Yeah, Jo Koy wasn't very good, but it didn't help that it felt like the audience was afraid to laugh at some of the jokes.

They should've hired Gaffigan. Or just had no host.

I had read everyone turned the hosting job down. He was announced at the host right before Christmas so he only had a few weeks to prepare.

I just watched his opening monologue. I thought it was funny. The audience was laughing and clapping. Maybe he wasn't getting the big reactions he was used to, but he wasn't getting crickets. Do people expect to be slapping their knees and crying? It's a few minutes of jokes about the movies and TV. He wasn't going after people like Ricky Gervais does. He did come off as a bit desperate, though. Like someone said, maybe he isn't famous enough for the room.

This winner's list looks about right...no need to watch the Oscars now.
How is The Color Purple completely shut out tho? Didn't they just go through a whole scandal of the Hollywood Foreign Press being racist and not recognizing enough people of color? I haven't seen the new Color Purple yet but I am surprised to see it not recognized for anything.

I didn't even know this awards show was happening until around 4 hours before the telecast. Very interesting to see the lack of hype and discussion compared to years past.

I understand that he didn't have much time to prepare, but it wasn't good, and he came off as quite defensive. It was funny to see a local guy on stage, Matty Matheson from the Bear (big dude with neck tattoos) has a restaurant in our town (along with several in Toronto) and his kid goes to the same high school as our kids. We were watching the awards and my son said "Hey, I know that guy, I've seen him at our school!".

Well, I'm not trying to spin anything. I watched the opening monologue and that's what I thought (I thought it was funny, not LOL or anything but not shitty) and what I heard (people were laughing).
I will just add though that media outlets love to jump on the bandwagon of a narrative, so I would take all of that with a grain of salt

I’m not defending Koy since I didn’t watch the show and it seems almost unanimous that he was pretty terrible but they were already scraping the bottom of the barrel with him. And with only a couple weeks to prepare, they set him up for failure. I can only imagine no one will want to host and for the next couple of years, the GG won’t have a host.
