David McCallum (The Man from U.N.C.L.E., NCIS) dead at 90

RIP

I knew him as longtime coroner "Ducky" Mallard on NCIS. He stopped appearing in NCIS regularly a few years ago due to his age.

A few weeks ago I learned that Dr. Dre sampled one of McCallum's songs for The Next Episode. Until then I didn't know he was a musician.
He had a very long career as an actor and I really loved him as Ducky.

Charles Bronson told him he was going to steal Jill Ireland from him...

I'm not old enough to have watched either of his shows.

I was a fan of McCallum from THE GREAT ESCAPE (1963) and "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." In GREAT ESCAPE, he played Ashley-Pitt, in charge of "dispersal," and he comes up with an ingenious plan for dispersing the dirt the POWs excavate from the tunnels they're digging. In U.N.C.L.E., he was originally second fiddle to Robert Vaughn's Napoleon Solo, but fan mail was so enthusiastic that they beefed up his part and made him co-star and the series improved immeasurably. He was quite the heartthrob back then.

He apparently had been acting since 1953, right up until this year, so that's a 70-year career!

He lived in New York and I actually saw him three times over the years, including on the subway and in a deli line.

This seems rather silly.

To me that was the biggest surprise, that he was an accomplished musician, who knew? Lol.

I vaguely remember him in the great film The Great Escape (which when I finally saw the film all the way to the end has a rather downbeat ending, still a classic film), and never watching him in The Man From U.N.C.L.E..

Even though I stopped watching NCIS a few years back, he was indeed oh so wonderful as Ducky on NCIS. He will be fondly remembers by many fans, RIP!
