RIP Right Stuf Anime (1987 - 2023)
Crunchyroll is shutting down Right Stuf on October 10th. It'll all be store.crunchyroll.com now.
I really dug Right Stuf: the sales, the membership discounts, the 25% preorder discounts (making Discotek titles massively less expensive than Amazon), their propensity for shipping titles as soon as they came in (often a month-plus before the official release dates), such a fun and playful personality, really nice packaging, a very nice site experience, yadda yadda. And now it'll surely all be full MSRP on Crunchyroll's lousy store.
Media Blasters' John Sirabella suggested yesterday that live-action titles wouldn't move over from Right Stuf, but that might not be the case. Not completely clear, though:

For so many years they used that really outdated site, and their "normal" prices weren't all that special, so it took some convincing to get people to see the value in the studio sales and even GotAnime (which was also so weirdly integrated on their website, you weren't really sure what discount you were getting until you checked out). I remember them revamping the site and almost breaking it, but from the old school catalogs they'd send and the recommendations in them to the Dark Lord lurking on the animeondvd forums, they had a lot of charm. The killer black friday sales didn't hurt either. And their packaging was usually top notch:
Over the years my buying habits for physical releases waned but there was always something in the sales to tempt me back, not to mention the manga. For a long, long time their shipping prices on figures and statues and stuff sucked though. Adding an extra cost for shipping insurance kind of weirded me out since they are the only vendor I ever had that option on. They will be missed.

As part of the integration, the Right Stuf store will redirect to Crunchyroll starting October 10. With all products to be available for purchase on the Crunchyroll Store, the collection will boast over 30,000 items, from home video and figures to manga and apparel.
The new storefront also includes exciting AAA items like the My Dress-Up Darling - The Complete Season Blu-ray + DVD Limited Edition; Hime’s Quest, the original game based on Crunchyroll’s mascot; One PieceManga Volume 100; and the Hiei from Yu Yu Hakusho Nendoroid.

Dang. I wasn't the hugest customer of theirs, but I did browse often and made a few really big orders, especially when they had the "10 for 100" or whatever deals, and some smaller orders as well Loved getting their catalog too. The old website definitely could have used some work but it had a kind of old school, clunky charm.

I’d started using them a good bit in recent years as I wanted to expand my anime collection.

That’s a bummer, Right Stuf was based in a small town near me. I even interviewed for a job there once.

The end of an era and I hope it's not the death knell for anime on Blu-ray. Right Stuf was pretty much the go-to destination for more expensive anime like Aniplex sets. I don't think Sony with their unwieldy corporate structure and IP concerns will be a good steward going forward.
Anime was one of the few genres still relatively thriving on physical media and Hollywood shouldn't be trusted on this matter. Buckle up, anime fans.
