National Cinema Day -- $4 movies on Sunday, Aug. 27
https://variety.com/2023/film/news/n...ed-1235700778/
This Sunday, all movies, all formats (yes, even Imax — if “Oppenheimer” isn’t already sold out on your local 70mm screen), all showtimes, all day will cost less than $4 at participating theaters. More than 3,000 locations — with approximately 30,000 available screens — are expected to take part in the one-day event.
The second annual National Cinema Day, hosted by the Cinema Foundation, is designed to “celebrate the power of movies to bring us all together” — or, to populate multiplexes during the dog days of summer.

As I posted in the theater thread, I did this last year and saw the extended cut of Spider-Man and it was nothing but screaming kids. Vowed never to participate again

I'm going to be at a Con on Sunday, but maybe I'll try to squeeze in a late afternoon movie for $4. But, I've seen most already that's come out on my A-List.

I'd love to go but afraid of what the crowds might look like that day.

Hopefully one of my two local theaters have some independent films that won’t get the loud crowds and I’ll have a movie day.

I just realized the new Liam Neeson action movie Retribution opens this weekend. That would be the perfect movie to see for only $4.

Folks are smart to try and pick less popular films than Barbenheimer to see on the $4 ticket day. It sounds like theaters might be a bit of a zoo on Sunday.

It's got to be better than national donut day. Wait in a huge long ass line for a $0.50 donut.

Unless the theater is really close by, this is one instance in which ordering tickets in advance and paying the online processing fee would be the prudent move.
Decided to take this promotion and go check out a new venue which is supposed to feature one of the largest screens in the Midwest ( 95 feet x 53 feet ), and that is even bigger than a NBA basketball court.
It's a bit of a drive in the far West suburbs, but figures it is worth checking out at least once, and they will be playing Gran Turismo on Sunday.

I am not attending, but is Collect A Con the convention you will be at this Sunday? I googled it and it looks like the focus is on trading cards and Funko and Funko type products, sounds fun.

But, yes that's the Con. Then I'm going to catch Liam Neeson's new movie Retribution at 3:30pm for the $4 show.

Work tomorrow so I can't participate. Local theater has an indicator (at a glance) of how full the theaters are and if you mouse over the showing, how many tickets are left. The big movies seems to be the 4k restoration of Old Boy and Talk to Me. 14 tickets left.

It was super crazy at the theater I went to today. Caught a 3:30pm showing of Retribution and it was super crowded the local Regal I went to in Long Beach, CA. The concession lines were at least 15 minute waits. There was a deal for the $4 small popcorn/soda combo, which definitely contributed to the lines. And my showing was almost full. On a normal day, a small movie like this would probably have 5 people at most. Parking was definitely busier than an average weekend.

The concession stand employees looked crazy tired and overwhelmed. I came up to the girl who was about 20-something and said Hi, how are you? And then I said, it's crazy busy today huh? She said Yes. And I said, Good luck the rest of your shift and she said Thank you.
Be nice to them. It's a crazy day for all of them including the folks who have to fucking clean up your mess. I sat next to these big family of slobs who spilled popcorn all over the floor.

I saw Strays with my kids (they're old enough), it was crazy busy. Every seat was full, even the ones right in front of the screen.
I took a cue from last year though and ordered my concessions ahead of time in the app, so I didn't have to wait in line for those. Last year I waited 20 minutes in the concession line on National Cinema Day.

Yeah, saving a few bucks on a movie is not worth the chaos.

One thing I wish Hollywood would take as a lesson from this is to offer extremely discounted prices for young kids when accompanied by an adult. It costs a fortune when you have to buy tickets for yourselves and 3 kids so it's tough to pull off a movie trip often, and it's an investment in their future as an industry as hopefully the children will grow up to love films the same way we did. There is a slight discount for kids now but it's still pretty costly. I know it must have been reasonable when I was growing up because that was the one thing my mom would do with us that cost money as money was tight in our house. Just my two cents!

The xd showing of gran turismo we went to had a total of 7 people, that includes the 4 of us. I was watching the seating charts all day, the busiest was the 2nd showing of Jurassic park. Everything was zero, or a handful sprinkled throughout.
