The Baker (2023, D: Sobol) -- S: Ron Perlman, Harvey Keitel, Elias Koteas

Fearing his estranged son murdered, an elderly baker with a dangerous past and his eight-year-old granddaughter must journey to the crime ridden Big City to uncover clues to his disappearance… All with a giant loaf of bread filled with 100K of high-grade heroin.

This opens tomorrow. Kind of flew under the radar. Obviously a lower budget indie movie, but I didn't know about it until I saw the poster last night at AMC theaters when I went to see Haunted Mansion.

Trailer didn't look too bad. 3 known character actors.

Yeah I know, the goofy poster makes it like look a Netflix or Amazon original, not a theatrical release.

It looks like the trailer for The Retirement Plan with Perlman playing the Nicolas Cage role and Keitel playing the Perlman role.

This is going to get confusing.

I rented this on demand and surprisingly it’s actually pretty good. I know 73 year old Ron Perlman isn’t exactly a draw for most of you, but he is a total badass in this movie. Some good fight scenes and he kills brutally. He has good chemistry with the young girl who plays his granddaughter. There are some heartfelt moments between them in between the violence.

This has a little of John Wick and The Professional in it. I’m not saying it’s as good or comparable in quality to either, but it has similar themes and elements. It’s a low budget movie, but it’s actually very well made and acted.

This is a Vertical Entertainment movie, so it will probably end up eventually on Hulu at some point.

And this is now on Hulu. These small indie movies don’t much attention in the constant glut of content. But as I said in October, I enjoyed this one.
