RIP: Alan Arkin - Dead at 89
Alan Arkin, an Oscar-winning actor for “Little Miss Sunshine” with a body of work that spans seven decades of stage and screen acting, died June 29 at his home in Carlsbad, Calif. He was 89.
Arkin’s sons Adam, Matthew and Anthony confirmed his death in a joint statement to People, writing, “Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man. A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.”
Arkin, who was known for projecting a characteristically dry wit but could play tragedy with equal efficacy, won his Oscar for his supporting performance in the indie comedy “Little Miss Sunshine” in 2007; he scored an encore nomination for his punchy and profane turn in Ben Affleck’s best picture winner “Argo.” Arkin picked up two earlier nominations in his film career, for “The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming” in 1967 and for “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter” in 1969.More recently, Arkin received back-to-back Primetime Emmy Award nominations in outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series for his performance in the Netflix series “The Kominsky Method,” in which he starred alongside Michael Douglas. Arkin received four additional Emmy nominations (across other categories) earlier in his career.

I've always liked Indian Summer and he was so good in it as Uncle Lou. Great interaction with Sam Raimi's Stick.

I remember him most from The Kominsky Method, likely because it's a bunch of episodes, and pretty recent. Loved him in that.

Sad news but he had a good, long life. 89 is a good run but I actually thought he was older than that considering he’s looked 80 for the last 30 years.
He seemed like a cool dude. Like a grandfatherly guy who you could sit in a front porch and drink lemonade with.

I liked him in Coupe de Ville (1990). Worked at a video store back then and we were allowed 2 free rentals each shift, so I grabbed it out of curiosity and enjoyed his performance.

A real comic acting legend. Was he ever not good in anything? But he lived a very long life, and was recognized for his work, so kudos to him.

I have always enjoyed him. And he's great in one of my faves, So I Married an Axe Murderer, as the police captain who is just too nice.

You know, in this day and age when sports teams like the Redskins have to change their names, and everyone always refers to Blazing Saddles as a "movie you could never make today", no one mentions that there was once a pair of buddy cops, one Jewish, one Latino called, and I am not making this up, Freebie and the Bean.
RIP, Bean.

I remember as a kid watching him in some really good made-for-TV movies. One was The Defection of Simas Kudurka, based on a true story apparently, where he was a Russian sailor who jumped from his ship to a US warship during a joint exercise. The other was where he was sent to a brutal insane asylum and he planned an escape. Harrowing stuff.

^ I keep forgetting how many great movies he was in, that sadly, I only own on laserdisc. Might have to dust off the player those weekend (which I'd already planned on doing for a July 4 viewing of Jaws) for Wait Until Dark, Axe Murderer, or Freebie.

Surprised nobody mentioned Glengarry Glen Ross yet. He was awesome in that as the nervous, shady salesman. He was surrounded by big time talent who were stealing scene after scene and he held his own throughout that movie.

As a blind buy I purchased the Indicator blu ray of Little Murders. A film Arkin both directed and acted in. I’ve had it for about two years and have yet to view it. Maybe I’ll rectify that tonight.

One of those legends you can never replace
It was not his most notable role but he cracked me up as the grumpy baseball coach in Million Dollar Arm.

He was great in everything. But I will always love his delivery in the swordfish scene from Get Smart.

He was such a gem. RIP
Going to check out Little Murders, some members on another board recommend it. Not the blue stain one.
