John Wick 5 in early development

During Lionsgate's Q4 2023 earnings call, Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake confirmed that a fifth John Wick film remains in early development. Drake also confirmed plans to expand the Wick intellectual property into spin-offs, more television series, and video games.

"We're now moving across that franchise, not just in the AAA video game space, but looking at what the regular cadence of spin-offs, television really growing that universe so that there is a steady cadence of a franchise that there's clear appetite by the audience. What is official is that, as you know, Ballerina is the first spinoff that comes out next year. We're in development on three others, including John Wick 5 and including television series. The Continental will be airing soon. And so, we're building out the world and when that five movie comes, will be organic -- will be organically grown out of how we're starting to tell those stories. But you can rely on a regular cadence of John Wick."

Probably not much "developing" right now with the WGA strike. But, not surprised. The franchise is in an upward trajectory box office-wise. This is Lionsgate's biggest IP.

Was John Wick's wife the only person in that entire world not involved in assassinations and other crimes?

Maybe the driver that delivered Daisy? And his cop buddy (even if he was turning a blind eye)?

The story really felt like it ended in 4. Not that that stops the studios when money is involved I guess.

I feel the same way. In fact, I wish they'd have not trimmed down the post credits scene as it would have further hammered home that the story was over.

That said, I used to think the first film should have been standalone and a sequel would be a bad idea. I've loved all three sequels and am looking forward to the spinoff/interquel. So what do I know?

I still think the sequels mess up the intent and details of the first movie. It was perfect as is. The addition of tens of thousands of assassins and a worldwide web of hired killers for a criminal organization that's bigger than most countries' governments does stretch credibility and believability a bit thin.

But the sequels were fun, and the 4th was probably the best sequel.

Still, I would have been fine with just the first movie. It's the only one I own.

That I do agree with. The first flick is a tight indie actioner (love that hallway knife fight that ends with the front doorbell ringing). The sequels veer into blockbuster territory. All fun (and I own them all) but the sequels do eschew the low key charm of the original in favor of over-the-top thrills.

I'm gonna be kinda disappointed if they don't send John Wick into outer space before it's all over. I bet one of the High Table is living on a space station. Or better yet, a moon base.

Now you have me wishing Roger Moore was still with us so he'd appear in a supporting role.

Bring Halle Berry back and let John "be dead". They need to pass the baton and leave JW4 as is... a fucking awesome send off.

They kind of are with Ballerina..

I mean we got the ambiguous ending, so anything is possible.

Halle is going to be in Ballerina?

I love Keanu so if he makes more JW. I'm there day 1.

I think he means the let John Wick "be dead" part. It's been stated that Ballerina is essentially John Wick 3.5.

Re: John Wick 5 in early development

Despite the very firm ending of John Wick: Chapter 4, wherein Keanu Reeves' title assassin was dead and buried, Lionsgate quickly announced that a John Wick 5 was in the works. This came as a surprise to John Wick fans, though the idea of another movie in the franchise remains appealing (despite the firm conclusion). Speaking today during Lionsgate's quarterly earnings call, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake confirmed that work on writing John Wick: Chapter 5 has resumed following the conclusion of the writers' strike. In addition to John Wick: Chapter 5 though, Drake also confirmed that more spinoffs in the franchise are being developed.

"On the Wick side we got multiple spin-offs and Wick Five," Joe Drake revealed. "We started to work on (it) right when the writer's strike started and we've gotten back to work as soon as it ended." Drake's casual reference to John Wick: Chapter 5 and other spinoffs came when while discussing Lionsgate's upcoming film slate.

Eh, I'm sort over the JW franchise. I haven't even started The Continental series yet. It's like the MCU series all over again, with the burnout. Maybe by the time this is actually released I'll give a shit.

Re: John Wick 5 in early development

I'm not burned out, but I'd rather see a new IP with the same cast & crew. Maybe Stahelski's long gestating Highlander remake will scratch that itch. Or why not a sequel to Nobody or Atomic Blonde?

EDIT: Oh wait. Those were distributed by Universal Pictures and Focus Features, respectively, despite both being produced by 87Eleven Productions.

I love this series... but 4 was the perfect ending for John.

Agree I don't need another one and would not support it if there is.

Re: John Wick 5 in early development

John Wick 4 was a festering turd, so if 5 can make up for that, I'm all for it.

Re: John Wick 5 in early development

If they have a story to warrant another movie I'm all for more John Wick. They do need to find a way to continue to top themselves which is going to be very hard to do after John Wick 4.
