Tony Award winner Ben Platt and Molly Gordon star in the original comedy THEATER CAMP as Amos and Rebecca-Diane – lifelong best friends and drama instructors at a rundown camp in upstate New York. When clueless tech-bro Troy (Jimmy Tatro) arrives to run the property (into the ground), Amos, Rebecca-Diane and production manager Glenn (Noah Galvin) band together with the staff and students, staging a masterpiece to keep their beloved summer camp afloat.

I was surprised to see Searchlight acquire this and give a theatrical release. I'm not sure how successful it will be at the BO. But, if you fall in the target demographic, you should like it.

This expands a bit this weekend, but I think the wide release is next weekend.

I’m definitely the target demographic for this, but it hits my local multiplex next week when I’m leaving town. We’ll see if it’s still there the following weekend.

I saw it today- I really liked it, It had vibes of the 2003 movie CAMP- which was Anna Kendricks 1st film and was directed by Danny Devito- It's available on streaming on TUBI, PLUTO, and PLEX if you have never seen it.

Hmm, I'd never heard of Camp but looking it up it seems like something I'd find interesting. Thanks for the recommend (not directed by DeVito, however).

I wish Camp was a wee bit better than it turned out to be, but I very definitely still enjoyed the film. I think many years back, Camp was on Netflix which is how I might have seen it (I may have even rented the film from Netflix, and remember watching it on disc).
I will be seeing this film asap (by buying on VOD, or through a streamer), as it does sound like something I would very much enjoy.

I still have Camp on DVD and have thought about revisiting it.
I watched a similar musical summer-camp movie on Netflix called A Week Away, but it was just ok.

I watched an oddball musical on Netflix called A Week Away, clearly inspired by High School Musical but taking place at a religious summer camp. The camp culminates in a final musical performance, but along the way there are full-on-character-randomly-breaks-into-song moments. It’s not constantly preachy (the main character is a fish out of water), but most of the songs mention faith, and some of them are classics by Amy Grant and Steven Curtis Chapman (Place in This World, Baby Baby), both of whom have cameos in the film. Kinda charming but not something I’d watch again.

Saw this earlier this morning.
Although I'm probably not the target demographic for this film, it was surprisingly enjoyable.
The cast was absolutely wonderful as was the finale.

I enjoyed Theatre Camp a lot, but on the directing side, this has hands-down the worst mockumentary-style I've ever seen. Why did they bother?

I watched about a third of it… does it get better? Wasn’t feeling it at all, aside from a handful of jokes.
True. There will is not currently ANY way to purchase this on physical formats, so you can only STREAM it, barring some way to create some kind of digital backup.

* I love "What We Do In The Shadows" but the "We're filming a documentary" part of it is way past its "use-by" date with me, and really doesn't make sense anymore

I finally watched this (it's leaving Hulu this week) and quite enjoyed it. If you like musical theater at all, I think you should enjoy this.

It's been a year since I saw it, but I recall the film didn't look a documentary at all, due to the number of camera angles (why would a documentary crew have four cameras filming a simple conversation, and how come none of them show up in the background when we cut between them), shots starting in empty rooms before the characters happen to walk in, characters not seeing the camera when they have secret conversations... wasn't there even some dolly/crane shots? Yes, nearly every mockumenatry/found footage film pulls these kinds of cheats, but I remember Theatre Camp being particularly egregious.

lol I guess I never posted after actually watching it, but it was just ok for me. I wanted to love it because of musical theatre and Ben Platt but it just didn’t land for me.
