Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 (2023, D: Gunn) -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

In Marvel Studios "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

Great looking movie, some very cool sets and creature designs, although like most of the Guardians movies I never quite felt the characters were as cool and interesting as the movie tries to tell us they are. It's better than Vol 2 in my opinion, though, and Rocket's story arc is by far the best part.

I guess I liked it more than the others, so far. That final title card surprised me.
I liked the little surprises I wasn't expecting. I'm glad I stayed spoiler-free.

Enjoyed this very much. Looked great, a lot of humor and heart throughout. A lot of Easter eggs and callbacks too. My main gripe would be Chukwudi Iwuji as The High Evolutionary: Stop. Fucking. Screaming. Dude. It isn’t making you more intimidating. Just makes me appreciate Jonathan Majors’ more subtle performance as Kang even more.

It goes on for-EVER; thought it would never end. They could have easily cut at least 45 minutes. And Adam Warlock is pointless.

I really enjoyed it. Love these characters. Nice seeing Sly and Nathan Fillion as well. Not surprised Gunn’s wife had a cameo as well.
The Rocket backstory was really well done and moving.
For a second I thought Peter was a goner. I was like No way! Glad it didn’t happen and everyone had a good ending.
The F bomb from Peter got a big laugh from my audience. I did find this was a little darker and more violent than the previous movies.

I quite enjoyed it. Felt like the dual spaceship rescue kind of went on forever but outside of that, I thought it was fun and actually touching in parts. The Rocket backstory was far more interesting than I would have suspected.
Agree that it's the best post Endgame MCU flick hands-down, and a hundred times better than Quantumania.

May be a dumb question but why was Warlock strapped to that table near the end after Counter Earth starts blowing up? (had to quickly use the bathroom so I may have missed who put him there)

It was interesting after the 2nd post credit scene with Peter and his grandpa that they teased more Star Lord, but I don't think there is a film upcoming that would have him unless it's the 2 Avengers movies which are still a few years away. Of course, he could cameo in something.
I might see this again tomorrow at AMC because apparently they are giving away a souvenir collectible movie ticket.

I just came back from watching this. It's 3/5 for me. Very messy, mostly boring with a few mild chuckles here and there. I hated all the Rocket flashbacks. They ruined the flow of the movie and were very predictable. Heck, even the afterlife scene played out exactly as expected. The High Evolutionary was an uninteresting villain, and I hated how mishandled Adam Warlock was. I'd have preferred they never paid off his tease at the end of Vol. 2.
I hope this is just a typical post-Endgame situation and not indicative of the quality writing we can expect from Gunn's Superman movie.

We saw it on Friday afternoon as a family. We liked it, though this isn't our favorite Guardians of the Galaxy movie. When it's funny, it's very funny. When it's got heart, it's got lots of heart. When it's action-packed, you couldn't pack in more action if you wanted to, and that's a good formula. I liked where they all started, their journey, and where they ended up. So all in all, we liked it and I'll see it again.
"Drax, you were never meant to be a destroyer. You were meant to be a dad." Well, I cried my eyes out like the proud dad I am.
I have three things that make this a 4-star and not 5-star movie for me:
1. For all of the speculation that some had around here about who would end up dead, I knew no one would die as soon as it became clear very early this was a mission to save Rocket's life. There was no way they were going to Saving Private Ryan the Guardians down to just a few members along the way to save Rocket, nor to go through all of that only to have Rocket die. Even Peter in space I knew would be saved, though I thought it would be by Gamora as a callback to when he saved her in space. I also knew they would never kill him over a Zune. So in that regard, I just didn't have a lot of tension around who would make it out alive. Believe me, I'm glad everyone did. I'm just saying that was never a risk, as far as I was concerned.
2. I know Adam Warlock from the Infinity saga comics and this character was so different from the one in the comics that it took a bit to figure out what was happening and just let it ride. It didn't help that my kid needed me to step out with them for the restroom during what appears to be a scene explaining why he's basically a kid. Really, this doesn't matter because so much has changed from the page to the screen for the MCU. And I always thought it was weird they didn't get Warlock in on the Infinity stuff way earlier, anyway, so I knew it would be very different somehow. It's fine.
3. I was surprised by how violent this one was. It was much more so than the other two. I was surprised to find I had a tough time with a lot of the animal experimentation. And the loss of innocent lives. Just a lot more than I was anticipating or all that enthusiastic to see. All of that led to a much darker tone than the other two GotG movies throughout and I think that will impact my interest in this being a go-to movie in the future.
It's funny, I never watched the Guardians cartoon, but seeing the team expanding its roster, I'd like to see more of how these different characters interact with each other going forward. Is that what the comic book is, these days? I've never read a GotG comic in my life, though I had some Rocket comics.

They seem to relaunch the Guardians comics every ten minutes these days, but most of them have been pretty mediocre imho. The best by far are the ones by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning circa 2010 which directly inspired the movies - good to start with.
