Disney's Wish (2023, D: Buck & Veerasunthorn) V: DeBose, Pine, Tudyk

Check out the new trailer, plus a poster and new image for Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish,” which opens exclusively in theaters on Nov. 22. The trailer introduces 17-year-old Asha, the powerful King Magnifico, Asha’s pet goat Valentino, and Star, a celestial ball of boundless energy that Asha’s wish calls down from the sky. It also features a snippet of the song “This Wish,” performed by Ariana DeBose; it’s one of several new songs written by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice for the film.

The all-new musical-comedy welcomes audiences to Rosas, a fantastical land located off the Iberian Peninsula. “Our heroine, Asha, lives in Rosas, known as the kingdom of wishes,” said director Chris Buck, who helms the film with Fawn Veerasunthorn. “People come from everywhere to give their wishes to a magical king who promises to grant their deepest desires—someday. Only he can decide which wishes will come true and when.”

Added Veerasunthorn, “We have been inspired by so many iconic films over Disney Animation’s 100 years, especially stories where we explore the power of someone with a wish, combined with the conviction to make that wish come true. Being able to honor that legacy with this incredible story and these amazing characters has been a joy for our entire team.”

ABOUT THE MOVIE
In “Wish,” Asha, a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force—a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe—the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico—to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen. Featuring the voices of Academy Award®-winning actor Ariana DeBose as Asha, Chris Pine as Magnifico, and Alan Tudyk as Asha’s favorite goat, Valentino, the film is helmed by Oscar®-winning director Chris Buck (“Frozen,” “Frozen 2”) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (“Raya and the Last Dragon”), produced by Peter Del Vecho (“Frozen,” “Frozen 2”) and co-produced by Juan Pablo Reyes (“Encanto”). Jennifer Lee (“Frozen,” “Frozen 2”) executive produces—Lee and Allison Moore (“Night Sky,” “Manhunt”) are writers on the project. With original songs by Grammy®-nominated singer/songwriter Julia Michaels and Grammy-winning producer/songwriter/musician Benjamin Rice, plus score by composer Dave Metzger, “Wish” opens only in theaters on Nov. 22, 2023.

I’m sure it’ll be cute. The style looks a little too much like Frozen but I guess that’s not a surprise.

The trailer only gives a brief snippet of the Wish song but based on what little I heard, it doesn’t sound great.

According to Grammy.com, there are actually two Grammy-nominated artists named Julia Michaels. If I had to, I'd guess it's this one, as she co-wrote the theme to a Disney Channel show called Austin & Aly.

Saw it today and it was pretty disappointing. I liked the lead character and the title song is fantastic but the plot and writing is forgettable. Nothing terrible but definitely in the bottom 10-20 of Disney animated films.

I plan to see this tomorrow. I’m really surprised the critics score is so bad on RT. Probably going to scare off some people to “just wait for streaming”

I saw a review from Grae Drake on Instagram and she is also stumped why critics are so hard on it. She liked it.

I saw this today at 3pm and besides my wife and I there were only 2 other families in the entire theater and both families didn't even make it 2/3 of the way through the film before walking out.

I saw it this afternoon. I thought it was pretty good. I’m kind of stumped by the scathing reviews on RT.

There were a lot of kids in my showing. And nobody walked out.

Ariana DuBose is really good as Asha. And I liked Tudyk as Valentino. He was funny I know I’m not 10 years old, but I thought “Star” was kind of adorable 😊 And Pine was fine as the villain.

And I know some of the reviews say the songs are forgettable. But I liked them. Is this top tier Disney? Probably not, but it’s definitely not bottom in my opinion.

Again this is all highly subjective. It kind of sucks that Disney movies aren’t as valued as they were in the past and many just view it as content I can stream later.

I'm sorry, I'm finding it very hard to believe families walking out of this movie. Regardless how middle of the road Disney or lower many are saying it is. Is it that bad where they would shell out that kind of money for tickets, food, and parking to get up and leave? It's no "Mars Needs Moms".

Went with my six year old and her friend. Both begged to leave around the half hour mark - they were bored out of their minds by this whilst happy to watch and re-watch Disney animations on Disney Plus. Audience consisted mostly of parents and young children and whilst we were the first to leave I believe it likely others would have left as well before the end.

Finally caught this a couple weeks ago when the kids were off school. Thank God for AMC discount Tuesdays.

It was just...eh...
It just wasn't clicking for me and I really don't know why. I don't get all the hate it's received. That's unwarranted. The villain was just okay. He wasn't really too memorable. And they hinted at a deeper story with the burned tapestry and his continual hint at a tragic past but they didn't show any of it. Asha was very likeable but also kind of forgettable. The story just didn't really connect. It was all a little too much fantasy. (I'll explain in a second). I really didn't like Asha's friends. They were really annoying without much of a personality. Or maybe too one sided of a personality without being endearing like Snow White's dwarves they were so desperately emulating. Alan Tudyk was great as Valentino and it's nice to see him in more of a role than just clucking.

The music was okay. Catchy but hollow for lack of a better term? I can't really explain it but it really felt paint by numbers. Like this is the "I want song" and this is the "villain song". It was lacking the creativity of the Encanto numbers or the intensity and emotions of Frozen songs. I mean part of the lyrics are literally "doo do do do do do do." But the kids liked it well enough.

I really think the main thing that's missing is a relatable story. Disney is excellent at presenting a relatable story in the middle of a fantasy world. Everyone can relate to Ariel's want to explore a different world. Mulan's need to prove herself. Rapunzel's coming of age story. Tiana's self made story. I really don't know what Asha's story is? She's trying to reclaim her mother's dream for....reasons? She's perfectly likable in that dorky Disney kind of way. But what is it that she wants? What drives her? She's just there.

Chris Pine is keeping all the wishes.....for reasons? They tried to make him a complicated villain but forgot to shade in the nuance. There's nothing wrong with a one dimensional villain. Jafar is one of the best and he's as one dimensional as they come. But you have to lean in to it. If you're writing for a nuanced villain you really have to do a lot more to build up those layers.

And yeah I know it's a kids movie. But this is Disney. When I go see a landmark Disney film I expect a lot more than minions making fart jokes and screaming banana.

I was surprised to see this film included in the Disney medley on Japan's New Year's Eve music special, "Kohaku Uta Gassen," broadcast on NHK. A Japanese singer, Erika Ikuta, did the song, "This Wish" (in Japanese), while clips from the film ran and it came after songs from SNOW WHITE, THE LITTLE MERMAID and ALADDIN had been performed. Frankly, I didn't recognize it and wondered what it was and had to look in the Boxoffice thread here to find it on the recent charts. Apparently, it did poorly in the U.S., but very well overseas, esp. in Japan, where it was released last month. So it's already received "classic" status in Japan!

Re: Disney's Wish (2023, D: Buck & Veerasunthorn) V: DeBose, Pine, Tudyk

Watched this with my kids this afternoon. It’s not terrible but really feels like it was written by committee - basically some Disney execs throwing out as many Disney buzzwords as possible and saying “write a story around that!”

It also felt like they were at least trying to make the Disney reference subtle at the beginning and then around the 2/3rds mark, they just said screw it and started throwing as many references as possible at the screen.

Some good songs but none that are particularly catchy or memorable. The voice actors were all very good. Pine seemed like he was having a great time hamming it up.

Even though we just watched it at home, my kids seemed to be engaged throughout and never started getting restless, although it did take a little while for the story to get going. My kids even watched through the end credits to see and name all the Disney characters.

Overall I actually did enjoy it despite it being little more than a big Disney circle jerk.

We finally watched it as well, I have the same reaction as most of you, eh. And it's not like my expectations were that high going in, but the plot itself was just really disappointing compared to the movies from their recent past, and I felt like there was just a lot missing in between scenes to move the movie along. Like the villain goes from decent hearted to bwah ha ha really really quickly, and it's to justify his end with nobody caring about him at all. I also agree the "easter eggs" became more and more annoying.

My favorite part was the one character becoming "bad" because of his loyalty to the kingdom since that at least had a little subtlety.

But my kids loved it so I guess that's the real test.

I didn't care for it very much, and bailed halfway through. My daughter liked it, while my son only liked the last 1/4. My wife said it was ok.

It was horrible

Fernando the goat is the only character I liked.

If I was still a kid I would have bought a plush Fernando.

Which just goes to show how memorable the characters are in this movie. The goat’s name is Valentino.

I liked the idea of the good guy turning bad. But everything else, the animation, the story, the songs, were instantly forgettable.
