Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie (2023, D: Guggenheim) -- Apple TV + documentary film

The film, which will incorporate documentary, archival and scripted elements, will recount Fox’s extraordinary story in his own words — the improbable tale of an undersized kid from a Canadian army base who rose to the heights of stardom in 1980s Hollywood. The account of Fox’s public life, full of nostalgic thrills and cinematic gloss, will unspool alongside his never-before-seen private journey, including the years that followed his diagnosis, at 29, with Parkinson’s disease. Intimate and honest, and produced with unprecedented access to Fox and his family, the film will chronicle Fox’s personal and professional triumphs and travails and will explore what happens when an incurable optimist confronts an incurable disease. With a mix of adventure and romance, comedy and drama, watching the film will feel like … well, like a Michael J. Fox movie.

Premieres May 12th on Apple TV +

That looks great. I’m a huge Michael J. Fox fan so I’ll check it out.

Also, I didn’t realize he was only 29 years old when he was diagnosed with Parkinsons.

Yeah, I think he’s said he first started to notice symptoms in like 1990. I think around the filming of Doc Hollywood.

Documentary looks interesting. I’ve always been a big Michael J. Fox fan so I’m interested.

Saw him and his wife at the Springsteen concert in NYC the other night. He can't stand for long it seems, but he was sure dancing while in his seat.

I mean who doesn't like Michael J Fox? Everyone that grew up with him surely does... myself included. =)

ET did a feature about Fox and Tracy Pollan's long marriage. I didn't realize when they met on Family Ties, he was dating Nancy McKeon and she was dating Kevin Bacon.

This was great. Just great. They mixed documentary with recreation with actual clips and make it so seamless. The BtS stuff was just awesome. He is such a force even now. This is a must see.

Well, Apple TV isn't on my radar (I can't afford every streaming service under the sun, you know), so are people who can't afford another streaming service just out of luck when it comes to watching this?

Yes it’s an exclusive to them for home viewing. It is playing in a very very limited theatrical run.

Pay the $7 and cancel right after you sign up so you don’t forget. You’ll still have a sub activate for the whole month. It’s the cost of a rental.

Or… look around for a free trial. There are some out there. Like this https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sku/648...?skuId=6484512

It's a good doc. Man it's rough to see now. His attitude is good but what a daily struggle this must be for him. Watching him walk and fall is very difficult, it's quite a shock.

Yeah, he’s always maintained a very optimistic outlook but it’s sad seeing him now days. I love the guy as an actor and from how he comes across a person so it’s tough seeing the state that he’s in. Need to watch the documentary at some point.

I tried playing this on the Apple TV app on the Roku and it was choppy as hell. Switched back to my Apple TV 4K and it's now playing smoothly. Better just continue to play Apple content on the Apple TV from now on.

I don’t know what it is but whenever I start something on Apple TV+ for some reason the previews before a show seem to have stuttering issues and the audio being out of sync. When the actual programming starts it plays fine though. That’s with my Vizio smart tv.

Re: Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie (2023, D: Guggenheim) -- Apple TV + documentary film

I watched this yesterday. I thought it was good and also a little sad. I think it focused more on Fox's early life, family and now dealing with his Parkinsons disease. It was interesting to see what he did to cover it up while still working in the 90s. If you did a full documentary on his movie and TV career, it would be like 3 to 4 hours. So I understood that wasn't really the point of this film. I really admire Tracy Pollan. She's a really good woman and Fox is blessed to have her. She's stood by him through his alcoholism, being away from home all the time and now dealing with this crippling disease. I was aware that he filmed Back to the Future simultaneously as Family Ties, but the film really showed what an exhausting schedule that must have been.

For this particular week, Apple+ seems to be the free sample of the week at Xfinity. So if you are a Comcast / Xfinity customer then you can watch this for free until either Saturday or Sunday.

I liked this, but found it hard to watch. Having read Fox's most-recent book, I knew a lot about his daily routine, but seeing it (as opposed to just reading about it) was harder. There may be health reasons for not doing so (like perhaps the disease progressing more rapidly than it already is?) but why Mike doesn't use a walker or wheelchair at this point is beyond me.

You know, people are saying how sad this was. But, Michael J. Fox is so optimistic and so full of life, that sadness never really entered my mind when watching this. Do I wish he didn’t have an incurable disease that affects his every breath and movement? Of course. But, watching this doc was more hopeful than sorrowful. That’s my take anyway. His family certainly treats him like a normal, functioning person. Why shouldn’t we?

Oh no. I wasn’t prematurely mourning him. I found it sad that this crippling disease has taken away so much from the Michael J. Fox most of us grew up with. But I said I was happy that he has such a loyal and loving wife and family who help him and have stood by him through his trials and tribulations. He’s a really lucky man.

It certainly hasn’t dampened his spirit.
