Reportedly $100M

Weekend projections are pretty low for this. I've seen estimations between $30-40M. And it's going to get killed next week by John Wick 4.

A cameo was shown in one of the TV spots. I've seen it, but won't mention it until I actually see the movie.

and there are 2 post credit scenes.

Third act is more than a bit of a mess, but overall I really enjoyed this...maybe even more than the first. The theater was pretty empty for a late afternoon showing on opening day. It's anecdotal, but that probably doesn't bold well.

Wasn't spoiled for the big cameo at the end.

They saw the projections for opening weekend BO, as well as the awareness/interest to see polling.
It's a desperation move to get asses in the seats.

It would be nice if that studio awareness of how popular that (actor) is as the character, translated into one more project with them before a full reboot.

I liked the original. I didn't really have any anticipation for this one. The trailers didn't look very good.

Having seen the film... it just comes off as a very generic superhero movie and lacks the charm of the original.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023, D: Sandberg) -- S: Levi -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

I liked it well enough. I listened to a non-spoiler review that pointed out some of the repetitiveness of the jokes, as if the filmmakers/studio either weren't confident enough in the jokes or did not trust the audience to get them without being prompted. After hearing that, I couldn't help but notice when:
  • in the pediatrician's office where the pediatrician read the headline aloud after showing us the headline
  • Mary having to pronounce "Solomon" correctly, then there were at least two more references/jokes after that
  • Darla saying "taste the rainbow" twice when just the second one was suffice (and was much more effective on its own)
For those that are going in as DC fans (I'm a DC Comics fan and have been greatly disappointed with the Snyderverse/this timeline, I feel the publicity surrounding this universe/timeline and the upcoming Gunn universe just undercuts any future with what was presented, especially the ending cameo and the mid-credits sequence. And there's still two DC films to go.

I had fun with it. More of the same like the original.

But I saw it at 730PM and was one of four people in the theater so.....

If only Black Adam was the villain in this. What could have been.

But I do need more Mary Marvel in my life.

Re: Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023, D: Sandberg) -- S: Levi -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

I just got back from a 4pm Dolby show. Auditorium probably had around 20 people.

I'd give it 7 out of 10 and 3 1/2 stars. It was entertaining, but didn't really bring anything new to the table. I mean for the most part it's a pretty by the numbers super hero sequel.

Rachel Zegler did look really cute as "Ann" when she wasn't in the God outfits. Billy's interactions with Mirren and that reading of the letter were pretty funny.

The Wonder Woman cameo was cool. So dumb of WB releasing that footage in a TV spot. I wasn't like, Fuck the movie is ruined. But, it was an important climatic scene because she helped bring Billy back to life.

I did get a kick out of seeing Harcourt and Economos in the 1st post credit scene with Billy. I didn't stay for the 2nd as I had to go to the restroom badly.

and I did get a free Shazam! comic book for seeing it in Dolby.

Decent matinee. Not sure I would feel the need to re-visit this.

Thought it was a blast! I think folks are cynical as hell going into this one -- the first one did come out pre-pandemic, so that goodwill is out the window. I think the letter reading was hysterical and my audience loved it. Wasn't spoiled by the cameo and as far as the second credit sequence - I had asked if that plot-point would be referenced in this film and was told no. Granted, going forward with Gunn, it's more of a moot point now. Saw it in Dolby Cinema and thought it was demo-worthy. The 4K disc should be off the hook! Oh, and they gave me a free Shazam comic book.

I thought it was great. Some emotional moments and nearly just as many laughs as the original. I didn’t shake my head at anything.

I also enjoyed the movie's other cameo. I had to look up the actor's name (Michael Gray), and I only have vague/non-specific memories of the Saturday morning show when I was a kid, but I knew immediately who it was.

A pretty good interview with Sandberg. He talks about how they got the Wonder Woman cameo and more.

It sounds like this is probably it for him with DC movies and he’s ready to move on.

Yeah the opening weekend prediction was expected to be low. It's probably going to drop like 70%+ week 2 because it's facing the highly anticipated John Wick 4. It's too early to tell, but I don't think this sequel will match the 1st movie's total box office. Shazam is dead. And like I just posted, the director wants to move on.

Looking at how dead this reviews thread is 2 days in, I don't think this forum has much interest in it.

It's a shame but not unexpected. WB/DC/Zaslav/Gunn/Safran dropped the ball announcing the reboot slate so early. They should have been vague about "new and exciting things" and made the reboot announcement sometime after The Flash was in theaters.

Sandberg commented on the BO in a now deleted comment on Reddit.

“No worries. It's not like this comes as a surprise. I saw where this was heading a long time ago. I'll be alright though. I got paid all my money upfront [smiley emoji].”

I thought the first was one of the few good DC movies.

Does the average moviegoer even pay attention to these things?

I'm surprised TV ads feature Levi and Mirren making a Fast and Furious joke didn't sell the movie better. ... /s

That's literally the only ad that has come up for me

Back when I was young, I'd say no. But in this age of social media, yes, the average moviegoer is likely to pay attention.

Correct. Just browsing social media you've probably at least seen a headline about DC shakeup.

Plus comic movies are so mainstream now thanks to Marvel, even casuals I feel are keeping up.

Gal Gadot’s cameo had to be shot in England and Sandberg wasn’t able to direct on set. So he directed remotely. He just posted this video of how he directed it.

Gal was in England because apparently she

I realized that the guy in the museum at the beginning was also in the Peacemaker show. Looks like it was a different character though.
