The Pope's Exorcist (2023, D: Avery) -- S: Russell Crowe

Inspired by the actual files of Father Gabriele Amorth, Chief Exorcist of the Vatican (Academy Award®-winner Russell Crowe), The Pope’s Exorcist follows Amorth as he investigates a young boy’s terrifying possession and ends up uncovering a centuries-old conspiracy the Vatican has desperately tried to keep hidden.

Directed by: Julius Avery

Screenplay by: Michael Petroni and Evan Spiliotopoulos

Screen Story by: Michael Petroni and R. Dean McCreary & Chester Hastings

Based on the books “An Exorcist Tells His Story” and “An Exorcist: More Stories” by: Fr. Gabriele Amorth

This is from the director of Overlord and Samaritan

Opens April 14th in theaters. Surprised to see Crowe do an actual studio movie as a lead after doing a lot of low budget stuff recently and that Apple TV Plus movie in supporting roles.

Could be entertaining with Crowe being a good actor. But, most exorcism themed horror movies have a very distinct formula.

But, the exorcism themed horror movie Prey for the Devil that came out last Fall wasn't very good.

Crowe should have used his “Zeus” accent for this movie.

This looks like your typical, dime-a-dozen, exorcism horror movie but Russell Crowe’s involvement elevates my interest quite a bit.

Yeah, the Chef Boyardee accent is pretty bad.

Re: The Pope's Exorcist (2023, D: Avery) -- S: Russell Crowe

I checked this movie out a few days ago and I thought it was entertaining. Although, it's not bringing anything new to the Exorcism genre. And it might be hard for some of you to get over hearing Russell Crowe speak with a fake Italian accent. I felt like he was the focus more than the family he was trying to help.

Apparently this did pretty well. Made $72M worldwide on a $18M budget and they are developing a sequel. Although at the end of the movie, they did have a text postscript saying that Father Amorth, who Crowe was portraying, kept working until his passing in 2016.

I just watched this tonight and it was entertaining. I liked the back story and how it moved forward. I would watch a sequel.

Saw this last night.

If the film had leaned a bit more into its more gonzo ideas, it would have been far more interesting.

The result we get feels like a run-of-the-mill Exorcism/Haunted House film mash-up.

The final 5-minutes introduced a plot point that I found far more engaging than the entirety of the film.

I was expecting a pile of garbage, but I really enjoyed the movie. Crowe's accent is terrible, but I the way he played the part was great. He seemed to enjoy himself. Of course it's nothing new, but I was entertained the whole time.

It was ok but nothing special and probably a hard pass if Crowe was not in it.

I assume if they do any sequels Crowe would not be in any of them and they would get Casper Van Dien or some other hack to play the role.

It was alright. They built up the mythology of the king of hell just to have it all resolve pretty quick and easy.

The Exorcist tv show still had the best exorcism hijinx in recent memory.

I tried. Crowe's accent was the deal breaker. Couldn't take it.
