Your favorite pirate movies?

I’m in the mood for a good pirate movie (that means the Caribbean movies are disqualified). Recommend me some of your favorite pirate movies, possibly something I haven’t seen (which is a hard ask).

Re: Your favorite pirate movies?

Not a movie but Black Sails is pretty good series.

Does Master and Commander count? Otherwise we’re going back to older movies like Mutiny on the Bounty.

Black Sails is on my list, I started it a while back but need to get back to it.

As far as other two, great movies. Seen them a number of times. I have a feeling this thread is just going to be a list of classic movies I’ve already seen.

Any good foreign pirate movies? I probably haven’t seen a lot of those.

I remember enjoying Nate and Hayes when I was a kid. I haven’t seen it in 30 years so I’m not sure how it holds up.

Black Sails is currently on Hulu and is about 38 hours of content. That will easily occupy you for up to a month depending on how fast you watch it.

Blackbeard is a 3 part miniseries currently on Freevee. A lot of known actors on it.

Re: Your favorite pirate movies?

My favorites

The Crimson Pirate - pure, early 50's matinee era fun, with Lancaster in his athletic prime.
Captain Blood - Not as slick as his later Sea Hawk, but a great journey for the title character.
High Wind To Jamaica - very interesting, and very untraditional pirate movie (it ends as a courtroom drama). Well worth seeking out, but unfortunately it's a Fox-now Disney- production.
The Black Pirate - Lush silent spectacle with another athletic performance by Fairbanks
Anne Of The Indies - A very young Louis Jordan and Debra Paget come up against able bodied Jean Peters as a female pirate master. Surprisingly well done- but unfortunately another Fox/Disney asset (I have it on Bd as a German import).

Swashbuckler has a lot of worthwhile individual aspects (including a tremendous John Addison score), but is, in the end, not quite the sum of it's excellent parts. Still worth a watch, though.
The Sea Hawk- depending upon how much pirate action you crave, this may be exactly what you're looking for.

Tangential Pirate movies

In Search Of The Castaways - more of a land locked adventure, but action-at-sea does figure into the plot.
7th Voyage Of Sinbad, Golden Voyage Of Sinbad, Sinbad And The Eye Of the Tiger - not really pirates, but more fun, adventure at sea shenanigans with a heavy does of fantasy monster fighting.
20,000 Leagues Under The Sea- Nemo is pretty much the ultimate pirate. And the film is rightfully considered a classic.
Mutiny On The Bounty - You can't go wrong with any of the versions. They are all excellent in their own fashion. I particularly love the Brando version which is gorgeously lensed in wide 'scope, and has one of my all time favorite snatches of dialogue espousing righteous anger. It happens shortly after this clip-

Re: Your favorite pirate movies?

I think Cutthroat Island is the only pirate movie I've seen outside of "the franchise that shall not be named".

I basically enjoyed it, of course I had the benefit of 25 years of being subjected to CGI-driven forgettable dreck, so the practical effects and color grading were the big draw for me.

I know this doesn't fit what you're asking for but it was the first thing I thought of....Pirates of Dark Water. Damn that was a good cartoon.

Hammer made a few. Pirates of Blood River and Devil-Ship Pirates with Christopher Lee. Night Creatures with Peter Cushing.
Some pirates show up in Swiss Family Robinson. Sessue Hayakawa is the captain.
The Island
Princess and Pirate with Bob Hope

Re: Your favorite pirate movies?

I always thought Roman Polanski's Pirates was a good-looking pirate comedy that was underrated. It was a big-budget bomb that was dumped-on by almost every critic. It's too bad it's so difficult to get on DVD or Blu-ray.
