Triangle of Sadness (2022, D: Östlund) S: Dickinson, Dean, Harrelson

In Ruben Östlund’s wickedly funny Palme d’Or winner, social hierarchy is turned upside down, revealing the tawdry relationship between power and beauty. Celebrity model couple, Carl (Harris Dickinson) and Yaya (Charlbi Dean), are invited on a luxury cruise for the uber-rich, helmed by an unhinged boat captain (Woody Harrelson). What first appeared instagrammable ends catastrophically, leaving the survivors stranded on a desert island and fighting for survival.
2022 Palme d'Or winner.

Had this on my list of 'possibles' for TIFF this year, but if it's already got distribution so soon afterward, I might as well just wait and pay a less-inflated price.

Same. I think this premieres at NYFF like the same week Neon will start releasing it. The same thing happened with Titane last year. This seems to be the case more and more lately. NYFF (and another local festival) had a bunch of stuff last year that was being distributed by streamers or had a theatrical release date not long after. I just didn't see the point in paying $30 a ticket for something that was going to be on Netflix very soon after.

Genuinely shocked by this. She was really quite good in this knife-sharp, bitter satire and had a promising career ahead of her. Triangle is well worth seeing.

I wonder what happened to the actress. I have seen that still photo from the film (her in the bikini on the beach chair) more than almost any other all summer.

Maybe someone could post it here.

Looking forward to the movie, but this certainly dampens it.

This was pretty damn funny. Probably one of my favorite films I’ve seen this year. So many great characters. The King of Shit! Dolly De Leon owns the movie once she shows up.

It’s a real shame regarding the passing of Dean. She is really good in the movie and gorgeous to look at it. Unfortunate that we won’t see any more performances.

I saw this last night, and honestly didn't enjoy it all that much. I think the third act is significantly better than first two acts, and each act has some great moments within them, but overall it felt like a misfire. I even rewatched The Square recently, and my impression of that one improved over time, so maybe that'll happen with this film, too. For now, it ranks well below The Square and doesn't come close to Force Majeure.

I give it 2.5

out of 5.

I had a lot of fun with this one, but I'll admit it takes a certain kind of moviegoer to stomach a lot of it. LOL. The first act almost feels actors'-workshoppy, and I'm not sure it's the best lead-in to the second and third acts. But once the film gets to the ship, it's pretty amazing in the blackness of its satire. There's QUITE a memorable long scene involving seasick one-percenters. Still pondering the ending. Overall, a strong B from me.

Not sure why my local theatre played the trailer for this for two whole months, then never got the movie when it came out.

These were my same thoughts after catching the movie this afternoon at a nearby art theatre. Honestly, the movie worked for me as a light comedy. I enjoy different approaches to storytelling, and think not every movie needs to have an air-tight, meticulously plotted script. I'd see it again at some point, if only for Dolly De Leon (I really want to see how much (or if even at all) she's in the background on the ship before she becomes one of the major characters).

Really thrilled this got a Best Picture nomination. If you like dark comedy, this is for you.

This has turned into one of my favorite films of the year, even though it’s way too long at 2 hours, 23 minutes before the end credits roll.

I think they could have trimmed the first segment with the young couple way down.

There is so much good writing, and solid performances throughout the film and it’s really funny.

It’s odd, because during the first hour of the film, I kept looking up to see if the blonde lady with the short haircut was Dolly de Leon because I’ve never heard of her

I’m curious to find out what everyone thinks of the ending specifically the final 10 minutes I’m not exactly sure what happened as far as the island goes.

I will definitely be watching this again, probably a few times.

Blind bought this since it was only $2 more than renting and it was worth it. One of my favorites of 2022 and I'll be revisiting it.

Spoiler:
Abigail didn't want to relinquish her role as captain of the castaways. If Yaya gets rescued by going into the elevator, everyone gets off the island and Abigail reverts back to her toilet manager role.... that is she gets nothing. So the big question is whether Abigail smashes Yaya with the rock. What I don't understand is what was going on with Carl and the running at the end.....

I’ve been trying to catch up on the BP nominees so I watched this last night. It was a huge miss for me.

Unlike other posters in this thread, I felt the first chapter was the best. It was well written, tightly edited, and was relatable. I was also expecting it to build to something in the other chapters, which it never did.

The yacht chapter was way too long and felt like a mess. We see how the 1% are shallow, fake, inconsiderate, and oblivious to the world around them, again, I was expecting it to build to something that never materialized. The seasickness sequence was funny but the whole chapter ended in an out-of-left-field pirate attack that had nothing to do with the story we just watched unfold. Woody Harrelson’s role was too short, and again, I expected the plot line of him hiding in the cabin to build to something that never materialized. I guess it was to give us an idea that he didn’t like interacting with his guests and he was somewhat unhinged but it never came together very well.

By the time they got to the island, I was pretty much over the movie and was expecting it to end. It didn’t. It kept going and going. Any subtlety that the film had in the first two chapters (which wasn’t much) really went out the window for the last chapter. The filmmakers also lose sight of their message by Abigail’s actions at the end. We just spent 2 1/2 hours watching the elite class acting like idiots, and then the only competent one turns on a dime to hold power. I get what the filmmakers ere going for but they failed miserably.

And yeah, that final shot of
Spoiler:
Carl running through the jungle

made absolutely no sense.

This is the first BP nominee that I actually disliked.

This is now on Hulu, but for those who haven't seen it, be warned... The plot summary on Hulu describes the start of the third act of the film. Seems a bit spoilery to me...

I pretty much had the same thoughts except I didn't dislike it but expected more (especially the ending).
