Star Trek star Nichelle Nichols dead at 89
I was debating to whether to put this in TV or Movies. But, Star Trek became popular as a 6 film franchise, so I'm putting it here.
RIP Uhura.

I went to LA Comic Con last December and it was one of Nichelle Nichols final public appearances. I was considering trying to get her autograph, but her management team was charging $150 for it, which was out of budget. But, now I kind of regret not going for it. Bummer. I know she was up there in age at 89 and not in the best health. But, I'm sad that she's now gone. RIP to a legend to the science fiction community and in the TV and film world.

Fuck. This one really stings as pretty much a lifelong TOS fan. I’m really glad that I decided to get an autographed 8x10 from her recently (didn’t meet her in person but still). Sad day to be a Trek fan. RIP Nichelle Nichols.

I went to a Star Trek convention in New York in 1992 and heard her tell the story about how she'd decided to leave ST after the second season and was dissuaded from doing so by an emphatic Martin Luther King! She seemed to get more lines and screen time in the third season.

I was just reading about her in "Star Trek: A Celebration", a book I got last Christmas. That famous inter racial kiss with Kirk, they apparently wanted to shoot an alternate scene, where the kiss happened off-screen, but Shatner and Nichols would deliberately screw up their lines to force them to use the on-screen kiss.

I got to see her at a convention here in 2016. She was clearly starting to have some of the problems with the dementia that would sadly set in but she was still engaged and open-hearted about her career. I’m so glad I got to see her and that she’s being remembered as the trailblazer she was.
(I also really like how they brought Uhura back for STSTNW and it didn’t seem like hokey recasting, but an elegant tribute instead.)

Mike Okuda also posted a tribute. If you don't know him, he and his wife are Star Trek historians and have done commentaries on the Star Trek blu-rays and DVDs.

Not unexpected but it still hurts to see so many of the legends of the original series leaving us. She left an incredible mark on both Star Trek and tv overall.

Anyone remember the "distraction" scene in Star Trek V with Uhura singing and dancing with only feathers covering her body?

She was an amazing woman. If you get a chance you should watch Woman In Motion, a documentary about her work with NASA to recruit women and minorities in the program.
