Awesome, this looks like the comic world I'm familiar with. His artwork looks very similar to Johnny Ryan's (Angry Youth Comix), I wonder if that's actually his work.

Good choice shooting this on 16mm because it adds a lot. The film is so grimey and disgusting at times.
Fans of American Splendor or Crumb should dig it. Good for the Safdies for getting A24 to give this a release.

This is Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates’ little weirdo son from that Baumbach movie about the Squid and the Whale?

One of the more interesting movies I've seen this year. As a big fan of the smaller comics during the late 80s to early 2000s, I found myself wishing I could pause the movie to better study the artwork and books in the background.
The performances are all fantastic, particularly Matthew Maher. For the most part, they do a good keeping restrained and not going over-the-top into caricatures, or trying to be funny.
I was a little surprised when I saw at the end this had been shot on film. During a lot of the movie, particularly in the darker lighted scenes, the grain looked like the ugly noise you get in video.
The basement apartment sequences were incredibly uncomfortable. From the sweat on the actors, to the imagined smells of the fish tank water, everything added up to creating a very real idea of how your senses would react to being trapped in there.
For all the glimpses of artwork by Johnny Ryan, and Peter Bagge, this film seems to be mostly inspired by Dan Clowes' early comic book series Eightball. While not adapting any particular story from those earlier issues, I'd swear the casting director was consulting those comics heavily.
I enjoyed this very much. Would have been great if only it could have found an ending unique for the story.
