Plane (2023, D: Richet) -- S: Gerard Butler, Mike Colter

I got an email last week about an upcoming test screening for a new Gerard Butler movie called "The Plane"

Here's the synopsis from the email:

THE PLANE follows commercial pilot Brodie Torrance (Gerard Butler) who, after heroically landing his storm-damaged aircraft in hostile territory, must fight back against a gang of militant pirates determined to viciously ransack the plane and take its passengers and crew hostage. As the world’s authorities and media search for the disappeared aircraft, Brodie must rise to the occasion and make life-or-death decisions - including teaming up with a suspected murderer on board(played by Mike Colter, Netflix’s Luke Cage, Fatale) - in order to keep his passengers and crew safe long enough for help to arrive.

Also starring Tony Goldwyn (King Richard, TV’s Scandal), Daniella Pineda (Jurassic Word: Dominion, Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop), Paul Ben-Victor (The Irishman), and Yoson An (Mulan, TV’s Creamerie).
It's from the director of Assault on Precinct 13. Lionsgate is releasing it. Since it's in test screenings, I don't think we'll be seeing any trailer or footage until later this year.

My first thought. I’ll never say the title without using the accent again.

I see the marketing department decided to make the poster as mind-numbingly boring as the title.

The movie is just called Plane now. If dex, Goldberg or story would care to make the adjustment?

For some reason I thought this was being directed by Waugh, but the cat that directed this also directed Mesrine I & II. That was basically the French version of Scarface, with a bit more class, and Vincent Cassel. I have the French import BDs.

T Mobile had a $5 code for its T Mobile Tuesday. So I got one for Saturday at a different theater I like. Just hoping for a typical fun Butler action flick. It doesn’t have to be some masterpiece.

I was hoping they'd call it Trailblazer Has Fallen.

I take it back! They can call it whatever they want.

I thought this was great and really well directed. The crash sequence was super intense. It's not as heavy on action as I expected, but when there is some it's pretty good. There is a nice fight that is done as a oner. The sequence involving a high-caliber sniper rifle...Wooo. I think this up towards the top of Butler's filmography. It's not anything you've never seen before, it's just well done.
Spoiler:
I'm not sure I buy that Colter's character would survive staying on the island.

Loved it. Awesome. It’s one of Butler’s better recent movies. Very well made and directed. The crash sequence was really intense. If you’re terrified of flying, this will make your stomach turn. The climatic scene with the high caliber rifle used by the rescue team was badass. My theater was cheering. I had a really good time. it’s a nice and tight 1 hour 47 minutes. Not some bloated 150 minute movie that we get a lot.

My theater was pretty full. I hope this can make some money this weekend. However, it’s been raining a lot here in California and there is a storm this weekend.

I'll echo the other comments in the thread. This was a lot of fun. Just a really well made, tight, economical, action movie. It hums along, never wearing out it's welcome and it's surprisingly restrained. There were so many opportunities for this to be dumb, but it never took the bait. Don't get me wrong, there's always an inherent silliness with these sorts of movies, but this was like the best possible version. Expectations exceeded, for sure.

Saw this film about a week ago and the thoughts already posted here echo my own.

I'm not sure why I was expecting more action than the film actually has but as already mentioned when it does show up, its done well.

I don't think Plane is worth a $20 digital rental. When it goes down to like $6, sure. It's a pretty fun action movie that you can watch on a Friday or Saturday night.

I might get it when it hits physical media. I saw a 4K disc is available for pre-order.

Will be blind buying the 4K disc. I wish we would get a domestic 4K release of Greenland. I heard the import was botched and doesn't play in domestic 4K players or some shit.

Re: Plane (2023, D: Richet) -- S: Gerard Butler, Mike Colter

This was a very enjoyable throwback/homage, what have you to the simple action blockbusters of the late 80’s, early 90’s. Very digestible. Butler is a great stand in for our hero’s like Arnold, Sly, Jean Claude…
I liked this very much. Nothing terrible new, but comfortably familiar and standing on its own.

Re: Plane (2023, D: Richet) -- S: Gerard Butler, Mike Colter

I didn’t expect much but it was very entertaining. It has two distinct parts, the flight and the aftermath. The trend a few years ago was “Die Hard on a Plane,” “Die Hard on a Ship,” etc, and this was kind of “Die Hard AND a Plane.” I expected a higher body count, and more of a twist with Scarsdale and the mercenaries, but they played it straight up. I thought Daniella Pineda was Asian but she’s Mexican American.

Re: Plane (2023, D: Richet) -- S: Gerard Butler, Mike Colter

Terrible title aside, this was actually a well made, tense thriller! It didn’t overstay its welcome with a bloated run time and kept a steady pace from the get-go.

Butler has done a great job in making grounded action thrillers (Olympus Has Fallen, Greenland, Plane) recently. I hope he continues the trend.
