Cringe worthy lines in good to great movies?

I'm not talking about bad movies that are poorly written throughout. But, good to great movies that just have one or more odd lines of dialogue or lines you just hated in movies you've liked.

For me:
as much as i love the first X-Men (2000) movie, this line has never, ever, sat well with me...
Storm: "You know what happens to a toad that gets struck by lightning?"
Storm: "The same thing as everything else."

Ugh, that line just kills me every time i hear it. it is just such a bad one liner in a movie i love.

what are yours?

One of the lines in The Dark Knight was cringy: "That's not good!" by a SWAT guy as a helicopter is about to crash. IDK if it's the line or how the actor (Nicky Katt) delivered it, but it sticks out every time I watch it.

What springs to mind is a line from a movie that isn't really considered great, though it has a considerable fanbase, and I continue to have a lot of guiltless fondness for it; and that is Road House. It contains some memorably good and witty lines of dialogue, but one terrible snatch of dialogue is when Dalton is in a fight-to-the-death with the bad guy, and sibilantly retorts "You are such an asshole!" to some menacing threat. Thump! Really, writers? That wussy line is the best you could conjure?

Re: Cringe worthy lines in good to great movies?

Maybe it's more the actor than the line, but the fantastic Six Degrees Of Separation makes me cringe during the scene where the kid is going off about his parents giving away his red shirt. "I loved that shirt and you gave it away!" His performance is on a cartoonish level no one else in the movie has, except maybe the other cringy-scene, where Richard Masur's son yells at him on the phone
Spoiler:
I don't think I ever saw that actor in another role after Six Degrees, guess he washed completely out of the business. Probably working in a diner right now, or something

As much as I love the John Wick series, Keanu saying 'Yeah. I'm thinking I'm back" in the first movie is just...bad. It's a bad line reading.

Mine is same movie, different scene:
Joker: I think we're destined to do this forever.
Batman: You'll be in a padded cell forever.

Similarly in the next one:
Bane: So, you came back to die with your city.
Batman: No. I came back to stop you.

Man, I love those films, but give the main character some comebacks that are at least a little clever!

James Cameron movies are always good for a couple cringe worthy lines.

True Lies
Helen as she hits Tia Carrere with a wine bottle: “Would you like one? How about two?”

I don’t know if you’d call Speed good or great but it’s fun as hell. The “Don’t get dead” line always makes me cringe when I hear it though.

Well, in fairness it didn't help that Bale's Batman voice just got worse with each movie. Batman Begins he was fine. But TDK and TDKR, the latter especially, his voice was awful. However, those are bad lines.

LOL, not to mention that that particular line is delivered like an even more effeminate Paul Lynde, but then when he speaks again he sounds like a tough guy.

Probably shouldn't count since it never made it to the final movie but how about the alternative ending to Titanic? I mean that was so bad it's really hard to believe it came from the same movie; writers, directors, actors everything.

I'm one of the few people that has zero problem with the voice. I think it shows him becoming increasingly manic and desperate to maintain his image of fear. The one time I do think it becomes super unwieldy is when he says "You'd never given it to an ordinary citizen" in TDKR, although trying to picture almost any other Batman delivering that line is also tough. It's a mouthful.

Why are The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises being discussed? The thread is about great movies.

In the youtube comments, it's said that this ending was used on certain foreign versions. Don't know if that's true. If it is.....Wow.

Re: Cringe worthy lines in good to great movies?

I know people dislike Death Proof, but I freakin' love it. With one exception: When Zoe is trying to talk Kim into playing "Ship's Mast" (which is already cringe-y) the whole "I'll be your best friend" exchange is just terrible. It really sounded like QT had no idea how he'd get Zoe Bell on the hood of that Challenger, and knocked out that dialogue in half an hour while everyone was at lunch.

And this is a small one, but in the great men's room fight scene in The Warriors, there's a brief cut of Mercy saying "Get 'im" that just seems so out of place.

What’s with the “would you like to dance?” line out of nowhere?

“That really SUCKS, lady!” is cringy and damn hilarious.

Denise Richards' entire performance in The World is Not Enough was horrendous, but there's a scene where she just totally flubs the line. I don't remember it exactly, but it's right after she and Bond escape the pipeline. I just imagine the director saying "We did 20 takes, and that was the best one"

And she actually says more than that! When she's standing on top of the toilet, she yells out something longer. But she's drowned out by the noise and score.

I would argue that, like bullet time from the Matrix or Rocky running up the steps or I'm king of the world, that scene has suffered from so much exposure and parody that it comes off as cheesy now but played much better when it was originally released.

Oh, and sticking with Bond movies (which I grant you, no one's complained about Academy Award snubs for writing on those), what about Blofeld's "I'll buy you a delicatessen! With stainless steel!" in the otherwise outstanding For Your Eyes Only?
