Favorite Interconnected Movies

So I was thinking about this after re-watching Magnolia today and was wondering what interconnected movies are your favorite? Magnolia is up there though, and would have to re-watch these, might put Traffic and Short Cuts above it.

Aside from the two mentioned already, Go is another favorite of mine.

Going back further with Altman, Nashville is amazing and worth a watch.

Re: Favorite Interconnected Movies

I don't know that it's a favorite, but Timecode is an interesting one. It has 4 simultaneous one-take cameras that intersect at various junctures.

Another one that I did really like is Cloud Atlas.

BTW, this form of storytelling is called "hyperlink" or "hyper-narrative".

Yeah, forgot about that one. The DVD has a cool feature where you can watch a version and switch between the four quadrants and hear what's being said (which is obviously just random nonsense that has nothing to do with the plot).

Re: Favorite Interconnected Movies

Hmm, first time I’ve heard of this genre. I’ve seen some of the “hyperlink” movies, but didn’t know this was the term until just now. Interesting.

Does the “Saw” franchise count as a hyperlink movie(s)? While not the best quality of cinema, I love the interconnected stories across multiple films.

Did Altman not invent it with Nashville?

Robert Rodriguez’s best film, Sin City.

Part 2 not so much.

Jason Reitmans Men, Women and Children. A film I feel is very under appreciated.

SLACKER (1990), Richard Linklater's debut feature would be my choice.

But I'm pretty sure Max Ophuls' LA RONDE (1950) pioneered this genre:

Re: Favorite Interconnected Movies

According to how this thread has been playing out, I'll add a few more:
1. Car Wash
2. Can't Hardly Wait
3. American Graffiti

When I read the thread title, I immediately thought of Michael Keaton's Ray Nicolette that bridges two of my favorite movies, the Elmore Leonard-inspired duo Jackie Brown and Out of Sight.

I am not familiar with the term. I gather it's somehow distinct from omnibus, portmanteau, and anthology.

Trick r Treat
What about the Amicus horror anthologies where the people in each story are connected in some manner.

Re: Favorite Interconnected Movies

This topic is not quite what I thought it was when I clicked on it, as I thought it'd be about multiple movies that are interconnected but aren't prequels/sequels in the normal sense.

Anyway... Nashville and Go are both good examples of the OP's intent.

Yeah, I should've titled it something else. I actually forgot about the "hyperlink" term. Maybe a mod can re-title this thread? Replace "Interconnected" with "Hyperlink" or "Hyper-Narrative"?

Re: Favorite Interconnected Movies

Nashville is easily the best of the films mentioned here, and would be my choice. Multiple Woody Allen films would also apply, maybe Crimes and Misdemeanors the most so.

Your examples are similar in that they usually all explore a common theme, but the individual storylines are told discretely and separately (like Story 1, then Story 2, then Story 3), and usually don't intersect.

Hyperlink cinema, OTOH, has multiple storylines being told simultaneously (though not necessarily chronologically (see Pulp Fiction) or even within the same time scale (see Dunkirk)), cutting between segments from the disparate storylines, and at various points, storylines will intersect and diverge.

Favorite interrelated story / ensemble films?
