Thought it was a remake of Peter O"Toole and Richard Burton film but it be real dumb with the two leads.

Anything with these 2 in it I’ll see in a heartbeat some way.

I’m disappointed this isn’t the true story of the sports card price guide magazine that blew up in the late 80s.

I didn’t dissect the thread title and assumed the same thing.

So this is the big Netflix movie this month.

Do we know if this was supposed to be a big deal or it sucked and Netflix just bought it to have another original film?

Re: Beckett (2021) - S: John David Washington, Alicia Vikander

I watched this tonight and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Although I went in with zero expectations.

I think there is a lot to like about this movie. John David Washington was really good here. I appreciated that he was just an average guy. He was out of shape, was winded easily, couldn’t fight very well, was clumsy, at one point he tried to take a motorcycle from someone to run away and wasn’t able to, etc. The movie remained fairly grounded in reality as well. When someone got hurt, it seemed realistic. There weren’t any wild, action movie type stunts (with the exception of a few somewhat unbelievable things in the last 10 minutes or so but overall it didn’t go to crazy).

That being said, Beckett’s constant running wore thin pretty quick and there was A LOT of him running. The plot itself is pretty flimsy. It was very loosely tied together. I was also surprised at how little Alicia Vikander was in it. I thought she’d have a much larger role.

Overall, I’d recommend it for Washington’s performance and his character being not you typical action hero. I don’t see myself ever rewatching it but it was decent for one-time viewing.

^^^ I agree with a lot of that. I enjoyed it overall.

This is not an action film, so don't go in expecting that. You could have easily taken this script and retooled it into and some by the numbers Hollywood film starring Liam Neeson, which judging from some of the IMDb comments, your average joe was expecting and would've preferred.

This was basically a throwback to the 70s style Alan J. Pakula films with a sprinkle of Costa-Gavras. It is a European production, so it is a much more reserved film grounded in reality. They definitely could've trimmed some of the man on the run stuff to make it a little tighter in pace. The director was Luca Guadagnino's second unit director on a number of films.

Is Vicky Krieps in this a lot?

I was impressed with her in Phantom Thread but haven’t seen her in anything since then.

She doesn’t have a huge role. Her character shows up around the halfway point and has a handful of scenes after that.

Nope. She is more prominently in Old.

I said the same about JDW in one of the "Tenet" threads here on DVDTalk. And someone responded that he was anything but boring in "BlacKkKlansman". Sorry, I still disagree. I think he's one of the most wooden and boring actors I've ever seen. But I'll watch this since it's being compared to a Alan J. Pakula film.

Re: Beckett (2021) - S: John David Washington, Alicia Vikander

Decent watch but the plot made no sense.
Spoiler:
If they just gave her body back to him from the beginning, they could have easily brushed away his thought that he saw a kid and get them on a plane back to the US. No need to hunt and try to kill him. Hell, he was trying to off himself.

The corrupt US agent was telegraphed from about 10 miles away. That whole sub plot was bad.

The worst part was the slow zoom into his face at the end. Completely cringe worthy.

This was subpar, and yes the plot was kind of confusing. Wasn't a fan of the camera work.

I had no idea John David Washington was Denzel's son, and I actually made a comment while watching the movie --- "This guy is no Denzel Washington"

Re: Beckett (2021) - S: John David Washington, Alicia Vikander

This got buried pretty quick

A good mix of Hitchcock, bourn and fugitive. Not amazing, but interesting enough to keep going until the end.

I already know the answer...but are we in the age where good/great movies just fall by the wayside because content is constant? Yes, the great will rise...but the good often becomes the great over time.

This movie isn't shawshank, but what new shawshank will be missed because it's only streaming on Hulu?

How are kids going to find cinema. End rant.

Re: Beckett (2021) - S: John David Washington, Alicia Vikander

This was definitely worth a watch, but I wasn’t expecting much. Way way too much Washington by himself. He can’t carry a film like this.

70s vibe was cool though.

why on earth would Alicia Vikander take this role? Has her stock fallen in recent years that I’m unaware of?

Only thing I can figure out is she wanted to be associated with Luca, even though he’s not the director.

Re: Beckett (2021) - S: John David Washington, Alicia Vikander

I thought this was a decent watch. And I’m another who was surprised at the size of Vikander’s role. Maybe it was something she could knock off in a couple days between jobs? And yeah, a lot of the plot was predictable.

Minor gripe: I know a character’s name works great as a title for a TV series, but here it seemed lazy as hell. Maybe because the character seemed so ordinary that I thought the title should have come from his extraordinary situation. But I know there have previously been hundreds of similar suspense thrillers with names like “No Way Out” or “Man on the Run,” so maybe they couldn’t think of anything unique and memorable. (I know titles aren’t copyrighted—eg, this movie’s title.)

Agreed ^ I liked it overall. Had a very 70s vibe that I kind of liked.

I didn't really understand the kidnapping angle at all, specifically who the "villains" were and what their goal was.
Spoiler:
Why was the embassy guy involved? What the fuck was the plan? Who shot the knife guy with the gas mask, and why?

its kind of amazing that shit like that doesn’t get worked out in a major motion picture.

it’s worth watching but very forgettable.

I thought this was pretty damn good. I have given JDW quite a bit of shit on his acting but damn I thought it was solid here. Much better than I anticipated for sure. Nothing that I would revisit but the wife and I enjoyed it as a Saturday night movie.
